Clash of the T-Lightnins

The Toronto Maple Leafs have become a team of inconsistency. In their quest to finish higher than last season, Toronto has rushed into certain games with speed and tenacity, while in others they have dwindled and failed to produce a single point. Over the last four weeks, the latter seems to have become the new identity of the team. Recently, the only true star the team possesses is one Jonas Gustavsson, but when the Tampa Bay Lightning and Steven Stamkos stroll into town for their second meeting of the season, the Leafs will have to be better than good.

It will be an unbelievable challenge,” Schenn said. “Since the start of the season and probably since the Olympic break last year, he has probably been the hottest player in the league. He gets to his spots and scores goals just about every night. We’ll have to be good as a five-man unit. Not one guy is going to shut him down in particular, it will have to be everyone chipping in.”

Scoring has been the major concern for the club this season, and will be the story for the team once again tonight. Stamkos has averaged nearly two points per game, and with the Leafs lacking the ability to get their names on the score sheet, they’ll have to score at least three goals to earn a victory tonight. I would expect it to be a goaltenders duel once again, but, as with any other game, if the Leafs want any chance at all to win, they need to bury the puck.

Unfortunately for the Leafs, their fan base is growing restless with the mixture of the Leafs currently sitting near the bottom of the league’s standings, as well as their lack of draft picks. If they want to turn things around for the obvious hole that they are currently digging, wins are an absolute must.

Toronto does not have any players who are on a hot streak.

Who’s Hot? Tampa Bay:

Steven Stamkos (C) 19 pts in last 12 GP
Teddy Purcell (RW/LW) 8 pts in last 6 GP
Ryan Malone (LW/RW) 4 pts in last 3 GP
Steve Downie (RW) 4 pts in last 4 GP

Who’s Cold? Toronto:

Francois Beauchemin (D) 0 pts in last 6 GP
Tomas Kaberle (D) 0 pts in last 4 GP
Phil Kessel (RW) 1 pts in last 4 GP
Jonas Gustavsson (G) 0-2-0, 3.05, .893 in last 2 GPI

Who’s Cold? Tampa Bay:

Mattias Ohlund (D) 0 pts in last 10 GP
Pavel Kubina (D) 0 pts in last 4 GP
Dominic Moore (C/LW) 0 pts in last 3 GP
Mike Smith (G) 1-1-0, 4.72, .816 in last 2 GPI
Dan Ellis (G) 0-0-1, 4.84, .812 in last 3 GPI

I will be liveblogging tonight’s game on The Checking Line. The action gets underway at 6:45 PM EST.

    @ canucksnaphook:

I couldn’t believe the network actually zoomed in and put the ‘illuminated’ circle around it. Props to them, for that. Makes up slightly for that three-headed crap we have to endure between periods.
    .
Though to be fair, Kypreos has been strangely coinciding with my own opinions lately.

We literally have nobody else to do it. Sad.

While that is true, Grabovski seemed to do pretty decent on them last season and I believe he is much more defensively responsible than Bozak.

    @ Uncle Otis:

Actually he was showing it to referee because of the icing they wanted him back on the ice. But obviously he couldnt continue.

    Poor Browner.

Trying to stay objective after yet another frustrating loss…

    1) We’ve found our starting goalie and he’s young. The goalies in the pipeline also look very promising. I think we’re solid in net for years to come.

    2) As mentioned on the telecast tonight…We have our future shut-down pairing in Schenn and Aulie. With Phaneuf and a maturing Gunnarson along with Blacker and Holzer in the pipeline we should be solid on D for years to come.

    3) Between our NHL roster and the pipeline we have enough young talent to put together effective 3rd and 4th lines that can go deep into the playoffs going forward.

The outstanding issue is the top 6 forwards. Let Burke focus on this now and let the young players develop and mature and we’ll be alright in two years.

    Poor Browner.

Ahhh..I wondered why he doubled back like that…and his eyes were like daggers.Im sure the ref didn’t ask to see it twice.
    What a mess….poor bastard.

1)The Monster was fantastic tonight again. (6 million in cap space with Giguere gone next year)
    2) Schenn, Aulie, and Phaneuf are the future of the D ( Komisarek, Kaberle, Beauchimen make up 12.55 mill in cap space together) Trade two for some help up front Please!
    3) Find a way to sign both MacArthur and Brown, both reliable players and if we would have kept Dom Moore, what a third unit they would be.
    4) Brown needs more Ice time, so maybe bring up a bruiser like Rosehill for the fourth line instead of trying more youth at the top six. We need Brad Richards or even Danny Briere for the top line centre position.
    5) Too many face-off losses tonight again (what is Keith Acton doing?)
    6) Beachimen to Buffalo for Derek Roy would be sweet.
    7) Could Zach Parise be had?
8)Would Malkin be worth 8.7 mill?
9)What kind of money would Brooks Laich get on the UFA list?
    10) Would Kaberle reject a trade if BB had a place to send him at the Deadline?

Versteeg’s not the worst shot blocker we have. Granted he has had more ice time, but he does block shots.
