Lineup Note: As per Leafs head of PR Pat Park, Mike Komisarek and Jay Rosehill will both sit tonight due to upper body ailments, not as healthy scratches.

Fresh off last night’s 5-2 shellacking at the hands of the red-hot Pittsburgh Penguins, the Toronto Maple Leafs return to the ACC to host the Philadelphia Flyers.

Although a loss to the Penguins – who extended their win streak to 11 – was not surprising in and of itself, the manner in which the Leafs’ players came out flat in the first 40 minutes certainly was. A strong effort from the opening faceoff will be a must against the Flyers, who happen to be the NHL’s top-scoring team.

The Skinny

This will be the second meeting between these two this season In Philadelphia on October 23rd, Flyers’ captain Mike Richards (1G, 2A) led his team to a 5-2 victory over the Leafs Among Toronto forwards, Clarke MacArthur (10GP, 2G, 7A) and Nikolai Kulemin (8GP, 4G, 3A) have had the most success against Philadelphia over their careers Leafs-killers on the Flyers include Danny Briere (33GP, 15G, 18A) and Jeff Carter (19GP, 10G, 4A) Flyers are 5-2-3 in their last 10 Leafs sport a 4-5-1 record in their last 10 In a bit of an odd scheduling quirk, both teams played in Pennsylvania last night (Philadelphia at home, Toronto in Pittsburgh), but will face off in Toronto tonight.

News and Notes

Philadelphia

  • Despite losing their top goaltender (Michael Leighton) to back surgery before the season even began, the Flyers have rallied behind impressive rookie Sergei Bobrovsky and veteran Brian Boucher to maintain a tight grip on 4th in the East, and a mere 3 points out of 1st place.
  • With Bobrovsky (14-4-3, 2.29, .922) having started the past 4 games for the Flyers, Boucher (3-3-2, 2.57, .901) is expected to get the call tonight.
  • Despite their offensive prowess, the Flyers’ powerplay surprisingly ranks in the middle-of-the-pack, tied for 16th overall.
  • The Philadelphia players are coming off a 5-4 shootout loss against San Jose yesterday, in which they blew a 4-1 lead at home.
  • Post-lockout, the Flyers sport a 3-5-2 record (and have been outscored 30-22) in 10 visits to the Air Canada Centre.

Toronto

  • The news of the day is Dion Phaneuf‘s expected return to the lineup. A word of caution: it may not be wise to expect too much from him right away. He may be ready for contact and in game shape, but having missed 16 games his timing will take a while to return to where it needs to be.
  • With the emergence of Kris Versteeg on the point, don’t be surprised to see Wilson insert Phaneuf up front on the powerplay at some point to create screens and wreak havoc on defenders.
  • As of the time of this writing, no moves have been made in terms of clearing the blueline logjam. With now 8 defenseman on the roster, something will have to give. The quietly impressive Keith Aulie (originally called up to replace Phaneuf) will likely be sent back to the AHL to continue to develop his game.
  • Lost in all the buzz surrounding Phaneuf’s return is that of goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere. Coming off a groin injury, which he subsequently re-tweaked, JSG returns just in time to relieve an overworked Jonas Gustavsson.
  • Having started 9 of the past 10 games, during many of which the Leafs’ defenders were nowhere to be found, Gustavsson appeared understandably fatigued against Pittsburgh.  A balanced time-share between he and the injury-prone Giguere the rest of the way – where possible – would be the ideal solution to keeping Giguere healthy, and Gustavsson from wearing down.

Update: Per James Mirtle, Komisarek, Gunnarsson and Rosehill will sit this one out. Lebda and Mitchell are in.

ugh dont know how much longer I can handle this lol, Im sick of watching a defence with no grace to it, like on defence we really lack hockey sense and its frustrating to watch … Wilson needs to go ASAP like the flyers were so well structured, we seemed to get outnumbered or throw the puck away all night ….

We really need to move Kaberle and another D-man, preferably Lebda. For a solid forward and trade some of the bubble guys for some picks or prospects. Problem is no other teams (with a few exceptions) would want to make a move right now. Most teams that are pretty sure of making the playoffs want to wait to see what they might need to bolster the lineup and add security in case of injury.

    @ Mortar:
Are you fucking serious? Every team knows that the reason kessel is “only” on a 30 goal pace right now is because he’s playing for the leafs. There are easily 20 teams that would pick him up, no questions asked, if they didn’t need to trade for him.

It’s part of the reason European players have traditionally done well here – they don’t give a shit about our media, and they never achieve the same celebrity status that a ‘good ole’ Canadian boy’ would, so there are no issues.

    @ Tim:
I defy you to name our “Top Prospects”. I got news for you…our prospects (whoever they may be) are currently part of this mess. Think there’s players in the minors who can help? Um, no. Last year’s drafted players are years away from even being assessed as NHL-worthy.
    .
The fact of the matter is that Burke is now in his 3rd year of running this shit-show and we are no further ahead. I don’t care HOW we win, it can be done with 30-somethings every year for all I care. It’s the endless promise of something better that pisses me off.

I figured you’d get in on trade speculation! LOL! I thought of Malkin, Ryan and Bouwmeester too but figured Malkin is untouchable, Ryan is old news and Bouwmeester is a d. JVD would be a nice fit though eh? Thing is though….he’s cheap right now. Under a million so Philly is in no rush to trade him I’m sure…

I have no clue as to what Ron Wilson is thinking. At what point do we the fans and Burke as the GM wake up and say that is enough.
First of all…i swear to God that Mitchell has something on Wilson. There are at least 6 guys on the Marlies who come to mind right away who deserve a shot on the club over Mitchel. Not to mention that Wilson’s big move is always to insert Mitchel every other night. Bonehead coaching.
Second why in God’s name can’t he sit Kessel’s ass in the press box to wake him up. MacArthur is playing his best hockey of his career and gets little ice time while Kessel get to do his regular program of spinns, Axel jumps, and figure 8′s. Even the Canadian judge is tired of Kessel’s program. Mitchel had more time the MacArthur. That is saying something right there about the coaching.
Really Lebda? Certainly a Burke mistake. Did not even need him. We had young guys ready to step up on the Marlies. Waste of money and cap room. If we can trade him now for a pick we should do so.
Bozak…i like the kid but he is doing absolutely nothing and getting peak ice time. There is at least two guys(centers) on the Marlies i could see doing more then him right now. Wilson needs to tell Burkie to call up Ziggy or Hanson to take his place for a few games. Lord knows they could not do any worse.
Speaking of Ziggy…where the hell is he? Well he is only the best faceoff guy we got and he is in the minors. He is good defensively…wins draws regularly…tries hard every game…and drives the net. Nope we don’t need him Wilson says…we got Mitchel.
Am I the only one that is VERY tired of seeing Beauch getting a lot of minutes. What a disaster this guy is when he gets the puck. Watch his passing…there was no one pressuring him tonight and not a Flyer in the Leaf’s end and he still could not complete the pass to his own player who was like 10ft away. Also I never seen a D man who was more inept in clearing the puck…other then Komi. The guy can never clear the puck properly when he gets the chance. He should treat it like a pass. God knows it won’t go anywhere near where it should. But Wilson plays him all night and every night on the PK…wonder why it is next to last in the NHL…look no further then not being able to clear the puck.
Young guys like Aulie need the ice time to see how they are coming along. The scary thing right now is that Aulie is to me our 4th best D man. This is a guy who was not on the roster to start the season. But yet gets less ice time then others who make twice as much money and twice the amount of mistakes as him. Another Wilson great move.
    Lastly…Wilson’s attitude….nuff said there.
Why do we have to suffer through any more of this guy. Even PMG on the TSN’s game tonight caught a few errors that Wilson was making in line matchups and who was playing at different times. If the guy in the booth is making smarter calls then our coach we got a problem.
I am done with Wilson. He can go.

    @ rockydundas:

I really don’t think Malkin is untouchable anymore. His play has dipped a bit, and the team no longer needs him. Lets say we offered Kessel and Versteeg for Malkin. I think adding Staal, Kessel and Versteeg to their roster makes them a much more complete team than simply adding Staal and Malkin. Crosby literally does EVERYTHING now, so Malkin has become an extremely expensive 2nd line center. That said, a trade like this likely wouldn’t happen until after the playoffs. They’ll try one more year of depth at center and no wingers.
    -
I’m sure Philly will try to get Hartnell to waive this summer before they move JVR out. That’s something we could get in on. I’ve speculated in the past that showing interest in JVR was actually just a feeler for if Hartnell does become available. They know what we’re looking for now, and Burke has potentially surmised, like myself, that Hartnell could be the odd man out. He’s ensuring he gets a phone call if that’s the case.
    -
As for Ryan, the return of Lupul has changed the dynamic over there a little bit. If Lupul can produce, they might consider moving Ryan’s bigger contract for a better return.

    @ caper7:
Nice rant! I agree with most of what you said.I’m not in on the Mitchell hate like most as I see him for what he is…a third liner tops, but mostly a fourth liner. the biggest problem with him is that Wilson has thrown him all over the lineup so I’m pretty sure he has no idea what role he’s supposed to be playing. I’m sure we’d all feel the same about Hanson if he spent half the year on the top line and had five goals and ten points to show for it. But I agree with you…Wilson has to go. If not before Christmas…I would agree at this point to wait….but on Monday January 3rd, when we lose 7-1 to Boston. Just throwing a little prediction out there!

Please, Pierre McGuire only calls what matches his script. He doesn’t tell the audience what led to that decision, or how Philadelphia might have forced it. He only points out what he knows will enrage Leaf fans. Wilson goes to Mitchell because Mitchell loves him, and plays hard for him. Yes, he’s pretty useless, but no one else is stepping up. I thought Mitchell had a pretty good game actually. He and Kadri were creating more than anyone else really. MacArthur wasn’t creating anything, so he wasn’t playing as much – it’s that simple.
    -
I don’t like Wilson any more than the next guy, but he does know what he’s doing. You can’t pick apart isolated incidents and take what Pierre McGuire says at face value – it’s all bullshit.

    @ Cameron:
I know PMG is an a hole but he does know hockey. A lot of what you see is BS for the media and average fan watching. But for him to say out load a few mistakes that were made is something.
Yes Mitchel competes hard…will give him that but you got a guy like Caputi in the minors that is playing hard every game and does more then Mitchel. I know he isn’t a center but hell at what point do you say fuck it and just try him. I think we passed that point.
It wasn’t just MacArthur who had an off game…that whole line did. That being said…i would rather throw MacArthur out there on an off night then several others that are having several off nights in a row…hell there are a few who aren’t even showing up to play. Also this was the first off game i seen MacArthur have with the Leafs. That is something considering who keeps with quality ice time and still has done nothing.
If you got faith in Wilson that is great for you…me…i don’t see him lasting the season. I think he is done now. He has clearly lost some players in the room. There are more then one player playin uninspired hockey right now and it draws back to the coach.
