GDT: Best vs. Worst in Northeast Division Do Battle

Despite the manner in which the week took such a steep downward turn after the Washington and Boston come-from-behind wins, emerging from a four game set against the Eastern Conference’s top four teams at 2-2 cannot be viewed as a total disaster when looking at the big picture. More concerning, looking at the particulars, is that the four games started out similarly – with the Leafs down more than one goal early – and what transpired in a pitiful last 120 minutes of hockey seemed to be reality bearing out, with the Leafs going quietly into the night with as much conviction as a soggy waffle after a couple of miraculous comebacks.

Tonight is a battle of the best and worst of the Northeast Division between age old rivals Habs and Leafs and in that respective order, unfortunately for Leafs fans. The goal starved Leafs will take on a Montreal outfit that’s allowed only one goal in three of their past four. Carey Price will man the posts for the Habs and is the next in line among the strong goaltenders the Leafs are contending with in the Northeast (Tim Thomas, Ryan Miller). He boasts a .935 save percentage this season, a 17-8-2 record, four shutouts and has been solid against the Leafs in recent times. Update: Word is Alex Auld is getting the call for the Habs, who hasn’t been bad himself in two appearances, posting a .950 SV%. The Habs are a good defensive team.

Ron Wilson will surprisingly stick with Jean Sebastien Giguere, who had among his worst performances of the season on Thursday against Philly. Brett Lebda will also remain in the lineup, making one wonder just how much longer opportunity has to be given to recent FA additions before it’s no longer disrespectful.

A Saturday nighter against the Habs will hopefully bring out the best of the understandably frustrated ACC crowd. With the different trajectories these two teams are traveling this season, the Blue and White sure need any help they can get.

I would just pair him with Kulemin and Grabovski and hope their work ethic rubs off on him. If it doesn’t, someone else would pick him up at the deadline, or worst case scenario, he’s gone when the season ends.

The worst of it is, the meathead announcers had no idea! why Mac was so angry! It is their job to see this stuff. All they could do is argue that Mac should have got an instigator.

We need a MLHS announcing crew.

I’d love to announce a game.

By the way, now that I’ve brought this up, I expect it to be stolen and become a headliner for…the other site….any time now: “Kovalev to…Toronto?”

I hate kovalev. He is a nipple. I d rather dig ourselves out of this with the personal we have then bring him in. I say we ride this lineup and really, and I mean really play tight D…..then BB can in good faith get on the phone and deal from our apparent strength……depth on the D position.

from a character stance I think those guys differ from Kovalev but you could be right.

    @ BurkiewillFINISHthis:
That’s why BB would ask a steep price for taking Kovalev. The last thing a team plagued with slumps needs is a negative presence that doesn’t play with heart. If Ottawa did include their 1st (since it’s a weak draft even a high 1st isn’t a huge asset), we could then accept this as a rebuild season. Let Boston have our 5th overall pick, we’d have Ottawa’s 2nd overall lol (based on the current standings). Yes I know I’m contradicting myself in this post lol.

    To TOR:
    Spezza, Kovalev, 1st
    To OTT:
Mitchell, Lebda (or Gunnar), Bozak, 2nd
    .
    .
    .
Of course I dont know that either GM would want to make such a drastic trade among the divisional rivalry teams.

I should really open my own site, and just call it a “Speculation Site”, where I post trade ideas that “might make sense”. No claiming inside information or anonymous sources, just pure speculation.

    @ Cameron:
Kovalev seems creative, but after the last few games Macarthur has done EVERYTHING. I wanted him gone for picks but now seeing his grit and hitting I want his signed and brought back.
Kulemin-Grabovski-Macarthur is a perfect 2nd line if they keep it up. That fight last night just capped it off for me. He seems like he HATES losing and has been busting his ass and running around like mad the last few weeks. I love it

Wow, the Devils don’t have a single plus forward who’s played more than 4 games. Vasyunov is the closest thing at even after 17 games.

The problem is that the combination of Elias and Arnott is the only thing producing anything in New Jersey right now. They really can’t afford to move Eilias just now.
