Nearing in on his first full year wearing a blue and white sweater, Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf is ready to return to his NHL roots as Toronto visits the Calgary Flames in their second game of a Western road swing.

The Flames were a struggling team looking for a desperate change in their core and it came in a deal with Toronto that earned them Ian White (now a member of the Carolina Hurricanes), Matt Stajan (who has recently returned from injury), Niklas Hagman (who has, at times, shown brilliant chemistry with fellow countryman Olli Jokinen), and Jamal Mayers (who cares about him).

“It’s part of the business,” Phaneuf said. “It’s a cliche — if Wayne Gretzky can get traded, anyone can get traded.”

Both clubs have nearly identical records since the blockbuster deal – Toronto (25-24-7), Calgary (26-27-5) – but a clash between the two 11 months after their agreement could see some sparks flying. Olli Jokinen feels the Flames are missing what Phaneuf brought to the table and had some positive words for the blueliner.

“He was a guy who never wanted to leave,” Jokinen said. “He wanted to stay here. He scored over 20 goals in his rookie year, a Norris Trophy candidate. I never had any problems with him, you know? He’s a good teammate who played hard and practiced hard. I would take him on my team any day.”

Unfortunately for Jokinen, and perhaps fortunately for Flames fans, he’s not the Flames general manager.

Phaneuf still holds respect for the Flames organization and is excited for a return visit to the Saddledome.

“I played a lot of hockey there,” he said. “I have a lot of respect for the organization and the players I played with there. A lot of good friendships were made and I am looking forward to going back.”

The Flames do have the Leafs number recently at home, winning their last five straight host games against the boys in blue and white dating back to December of 2002. Plenty of Leafs characters have come and gone in that time frame and with both teams, arguably, on their slow rise back to respectable hockey, it could be one of the last games of the 2010 year that Leafs and Flames fans can look back on and appreciate.

I wish Hanson would work on his face offs. He should be up in the big club instead of Mitchell or Brent.

Hanson is a career 55.2% on faceoffs. Not sure why he isn’t up, to be honest. He barely got a chance. 3 games on the fourth line and right back down.

Mitchell and Brent replaced with quality guys.

IMO, Brent’s an AHLer who got a shot playing in the big leagues simply due to Toronto’s dearth down the middle.
Mitchell on the other hand is a source of great frustration for me because he’s shown in the past that he can be a good checker. He’s shown he’s got some decent wheels. He’s shown that on occasion he can put the puck in the net. He’s shown that he’s got some knack for making plays. Yet he’s displayed none of that this year at all.
Mitchell needs to understand that if he wants to keep making an NHL paycheque he must develop into the ultimate 3rd/4th line grinding center. He needs to throw his 6’1 205 lb body around with reckless abandon. He needs to become a pain in the ass to play against, not just a bloody floater.
But, yeah your probably right. We should just go out and get some quality guys instead.

This is what I’d like the roster to look like next year:
    -
    MacArthur (2.5) – Grabo (2.9) – Kulemin (2.35)
    Hartnell ‘A’ (4.2) – Bozak (1.85) – Kessel (5.4)
    Versteeg (3.0) – Laich (4.25) – Armstrong (3.0)
    Sjostrom (0.7) – Hanson (0.7) – Brown (0.675)
    Orr (1.0)
    -
    Schenn ‘A’ (3.5) – Kaberle (4.5)
    Phaneuf ‘C’ (6.5) – Aulie (0.75)
    Gunnarsson (1.25) – Beauchemin (3.8)
    -
    Bryzgalov (4.5) – Gustavsson (1.35)
    -
Sign Bryzgalov and Laich on July 1st, and find a way to turn the assets you can get for Komisarek and Giguere into Hartnell. Make Kadri fight to wrestle a spot away from someone, and if he can’t, well then he starts developing chemistry with D’Amigo on the Marlies.

I don’t want to come off as though I am just complaining because of a loss, but the Leafs got exposed for being too small or too weak again tonight. Lebda, Kessel, Kadri, Versteeg, Mitchell and others just couldn’t hold there own in puck battles. We need more size and/or strength. When the big flames forwards cycled high our forwards were like misquitos being pushed aside.
On a brighter note, I think it must be apparent now to all that Mikhail Grabovski is emerging as a very effective player. He has added a very good shot to his arsenal of weapons. I have always liked Grabovski and his moxie, but he is really starting to roll.
    Lastly, we missed Gunnarsson tonight.

I have been calling for Hanson all year. We need his size and strength.
The problem this team is having right now is that after Grabovski’s line we are not able to muster much of anything against teams with size. There will always be anomolies but generally we have major problems with bigger, stronger teams with grit.
The Vancouver game on Saturday will make that point with emphasis.
Also what is going on with Kessel, I thought he played better than this last year. Anybody else feel the same???

    @ 4evrblue:

So much depends on how Bozak develops. If he finishes the year strong like he did last year, we could be in good shape with the above lineup. If he continues to struggle to find offense though, we’ll be in a tough spot again.

    @ B Leaf:

Stajan played great with him for his time, and Bozak finished the year very strong. His play is directly proportional to his center. If you watch, he’s being forced to carry the puck into the zone way too often. It has to be Bozak carrying the puck into the zone, Armstrong crashing the net, and Kessel trailing or streaking looking for the pass. Instead, they give it to Kessel at center, and 4 guys collapose on him immediately. The more I watch for this the more I realize there’s not a damn thing he can do about it. It’s not a surprize that in most of Kessel’s best games, Bozak also played very well.

I think our expectations for Kessel are too high based on the two number ones and a second. If we signed him as a free agent or drafted him we’d be happier with him. Unfortunately for Phil, he’ll always be measured against what was given up to get him. Having said that, he’s still young and could still turn into a all around hockey player who plays a full 60 minutes.

This is true, but frustration is part of that. He may also not get along with Wilson. Could be a lot of things. The good part of it is that we know he can be better, and that the best of Kessel is still to come. Anyways, I’m off to bed. Later.

Bet Burke trades his top scorer before the deadline instead of paying him what he is worth, seeing as he got him for nothing in the first place, MacArthur that is..

I chose to cool off for a few hours before posting…I am new here and dont want to start any shit..I have been following the posts for many months but have stayed out of the fray so far…I think tonights loss was a complete team effort.Add the refs not calling the too many men on the ice thing for most of the game and it was over…After the last game with Edmonton I was pumped for a win in Calgary so if we lost to Vancouver like we will I would be happy with the 2 out of three idea like in the Meatloaf song..That is fucked now!…We are pretty much at a juncture now that we have to realize this team is not going to make the playoffs and we have to start thinking about the future for next season…Jesus!…and it isnt even Christmas yet!…Aint that a bitch!!..I am not real happy with Ron Wilson’s coaching either!..Not at all!..I was in his pocket with his cocky attitude and his record as a hard assed coach..which I though Toronto needed to get the players off their asses..not sure if this is working yet..The Muskoka 5 are long gone except for Kaberle..Brian Burke I have a lot of faith in too…He was Jesus Christ coming to take over when he did and I have been pretty much on board with his decisions since he came onboard…Cliff Fletcher is to blame for the Sundin fiasco in my mind…I think he is responsible for him walking and the Jeff Finger thing…JFJr…not even going to go there….This organization is the disfunctional child of the NHL that happens to be the richest team in the NHL…with the largest fanbase of any hockey team on earth…Ownership is a problem of course..The Ontario Teacher Pension fund is part of the problem being profit oriented and if they sell their shares to some winning driven owner like Jim Balsillie I would support that..although the pricks like Gary Bettman and the rest of the owners dont seem to like that idea for whatever reason…I have a real problem with the NHL commision..The Toronto Maple Leafs are the biggest contibuter obviously to the subsidizing of every other NHL franchise in the 30 team league..We are not the Pheonix Coyotes of the latest expansion league…We are not the NY York Islanders of the earlier expansion league either!!…Why the hell does shit always float our way over the last 43 or so years?….Why?….We should be the flagship of the NHL just like the Montreal Candiens….What is going on here?…

Now that I have introduced myself and my overall thoughts about the team in general..I will add my thoughts about the individual players…You can rip on me if you like…or agree…
Dion Phaneuf-I was a fan of his when he started out as a rookie in Calgary..His hits and his offensive ability made him a star from the beginning..His star value faded in Calgary after a couple of years for whatever reason..BUT!…We traded for him and Sjostrom and Aulie for peanuts so I think we are ahead in that trade..Not so sure he should be wearing the C yet but Burke and Wilson are cocky kinda guys like Phaneuf so they picked him..Lets see how it plays out..Shall we?..He is outspoken and agressive, truculent, abrasive and all that shit…something we didnt have in Sundin for 13 years..and I loved Sundin…so maybe we will try this for a while…no?..A leader in nasty and not so much skill..Yep!..I am on board so far..Sundin was a bit of a floater even if he was a point a game player..Shit!…we missed out on the Chris Pronger sweepstakes to goddam Philly!…Burke should have had his connection working there!..He brought him to Aneheim for god’s sakes to win a cup!…Shit!…Burkie missed that deal!..Seems to me that Philly paid pretty much the same price for Pronger that Burke paid for Kessel…no?
