Leafs Must Continue To Battle
Share

You can never give up hope especially with 51 games remaining in the NHL schedule but with the Toronto Maple Leafs currently eight points out of a playoff spot with four teams also ahead of them to get there the odds are pretty stacked against them.  Last season I believe only one team made the playoffs that weren’t already officially among the top eight seeds as of December 1/2009 and that was the Philadelphia Flyers and we all remember how they managed to squeak in.

One could argue that they [Flyers] probably should have been in the race from the first game of the season given the roster of talent they possess and eventual trip all the way to the Stanley Cup finals.  Nobody would make that same argument for this year’s version of the Leafs and while there is always a chance, I am not overly optimistic.

So if we aren’t looking at a playoff berth what are we playing for?

I’d say the Leafs are playing for hope.  Hope that some of their youth takes some meaningful strides, whether it is Nazem Kadri, Jonas Gustavsson or Luke Schenn, we want to show progress.  Another motivating factor in the back of everyone’s mind is the fact that the Boston Bruins own the Leafs first round pick in the 2011 NHL Entry draft.

If the ping pong balls fall the way they should, here is the current drafting order:

Team GP Pts
NY Islanders 29 17
New Jersey 30 20
Florida 29 26
Toronto 31 28
Edmonton 21 29
Buffalo 31 30
Minnesota 30 30
Ottawa 33 31
Calgary 32 31
Carolina 30 32

Things look pretty bleak at first glance however the Leafs are only four points from moving seven spots in the standings to a more acceptable tenth position overall.  They need to get out of that bottom five and to start making up some ground on the teams in front of them.  Who knows what a hot streak could do for them in terms of possibly even getting back into striking distance of the playoff teams.

One would also have to assume the New Jersey Devils will eventually find their games this season so we can’t afford to stall or go into another long losing streak.  The ramifications could be swift and brutal if the Leafs give up the #2 overall pick in the draft again in 2011 and I am sure Brian Burke is still actively looking to improve this team for that very reason.

That’s a great little piece of stats work. I think what it highlights more than Giguere’s decline though, is how the team collapses when Giggy lets in a bad one. They expect him to be there for them, and they deflate when he shits the bed.

I agree because his contract isn’t that bad… but do we really try and market him… I mean at what cost and really we would only be getting a bag of pucks back in any trade…

Not if they watch hockey or read what we post here. The guy is awful.

I see nothing about his game that i like, and I was excited when he signed here as a “back up in case Kaberle was traded”. Fuck, as if.

It would have to be a really solid month, lol. I’m talking about just future’s, or maybe a bad forward contract that expires this year instead of next. We’ll see. I hate Lebda, but he does have a history of getting better as the year goes on.
    -
    @ Omac13:
    -
Gunnarsson has still been more effective. You’re only looking at what you want to see. Everyone is enamoured with the guy because he’s fucking enormous and had a couple good games, but he does have work to do. You’re also being completely unfair to Komisarek, who’s made some excellent breakout passes this year. Offensively, both bring more to the table at this point in time. I’d rather Aulie go play 25 minutes per night with the Marlies for a month or so with the knowledge of what he needs to do to be an NHL defender. He will improve quickly, I’m sure.
    -
By the trade deadline, I’d like one of Komisarek or Beauchemin traded, and our D to look like this:
    -
    Kaberle – Schenn
    Phaneuf – Aulie
    Gunnarsson – Komi/Beau
    (Lebda)
    -
It seems to me that Aulie will be the perfect compliment to Phaneuf’s run and gun style once he becomes acclimitized to the NHL.

Lebda and Beauchemin need to go. However if Kaberle cannot be re-signed then Beauch can stay.
Going to be a difficult balance in the next few months. God, I hate my team.

yep… Ledba is riduclously bad… He hasn’t had one good game. I’ve never seen such a horrible defensmen in the NHL in my honest opinion who costs his team every single game he plays. Every game he gives up a break away or a turn over that leads to a goal… It really is unbelievable…. Finger > Lebda. Belak > Lebda… Aki fucking Berg > > Lebda.

@cameron-yeah and bush blew up the twin towers and jfk was shot by Mr T. man your conspiracy theories are hilarious. i’ve addressed all your points ad nauseum to placate you to answer one simple question which you wont answer because you know it will undermine your credibility-and the fact that you are a homer-which is okay-but dont try to assert some sort of holier than thou objectivity while you demean the opinions of others that dont agree with you. facts are facts as they say. Chiarelli could have moved anyone due to cap issues-he moved kessel. sutter the same re phaneuf. both of these players were moved as much because of off ice issues as their play-now phaneuf was also underperforming relative to his cap hit which added to the equation. you want to argue that trades that happened pre cap dont apply now as they were done under an entirely different set of circumstances yet you want to bring them up now to make a point. not all trades in history have occurred due to character issues obviously. but on one hand you assert that in a cap world you dont get fair value for high-end assets because teams will only move those assets under duress and a rival GM knows this-and further that only certain teams can afford them- but on the other hand you want to argue that a Gm who has a young, elite asset would let them walk if there were no other major issues involved? talk about gullible-stop worrying about the MSM and start worrying about your ability to process information. Kessel fetched 2 firsts and a 2nd from our GM who in turn paid him $5.4m per!-and hes not even a superstar. Either Burke doesnt know the way the league works now and needs to fire nonis and hire you…or he’s an idiot.
    .
since you wont answer the question…alas, I guess the lack of a challenge on this site has eroded your skills. I guess I’ll just wait for your next trade proposal-or not.

Guys, I love Keith Aulie’s game, and I have no doubt that he’s a future top 4, but he’s struggled. Gunnarsson has played way better than him, for people who think otherwise. Aulie gets sheltered minutes, minimal PK time and is still a -5. His giveaway-takeaway ratio is worst of all our defencemen. He’s played well, but he needs more time in the minors.

Too add to my last post, Gunnarsson really gets the short end of the stick around here. Everyone is playing extra attention to his mistakes because of how poorly he played during the pre-season and his first two or three regular season games, but he’s been playing as well as last season for a while now. Here are some select statistics.
Giveaway/takeaway ratio: second amongst Leafs defencemen (only Kaberle has a better ratio)
Blocked Shots per game: third among Leafs defencemen (only Beau and Schenn are better)
Shooting percentage: first among Leafs defencemen

All this paired mostly with Lebda at even strength, and we all know how he likes to hang his defence partner out to dry with terrible pinches.

    @ paso:

Chiarelli had very few options when he elected to move Kessel, which (shockingly!) you have decided to omit for the purpose of giving your bogus argument some credit. If you’ll recall, Savard was coming off a career year, while Krejci was willing to sign for peanuts after a 73 point season. The only option to move significant salary was Patrice Bergeron, who had suffered back-to-back concussions leaving many wondering if he’d ever play hockey seriously again. His value at that point, given his 4.75 million dollar price tag, was less than that of John Mitchell. Kessel was really the only option.
    -
Now, Kessel is one of the very few star player trades where I’m willing to concede there was probably some dressing room issues. I don’t buy it with Phaneuf, as again, the proof is in the testimonies of those who have defended him. Bouwmeester was completely unmoveable after falling off the map in Calgary, and he, Regehr and Sarich had full NMC/NTC’s (funny how you omitted that in your “analysis” of the trade). Phaneuf was quite simply the easiest to move for the greatest return. If you need to answers in regards to Phaneuf’s statistical decline, look no further than DWC’s excellent analysis of the situation. With Kessel, he probably was a dressing room issue. However, all last year, Elliote Friedman and a few others reported that dressing room issues persisted in the Boston dressing room, and that if it couldn’t be sorted out, big changes would come. Ironically, it was Savard’s injury that brought the team together. With him out of the lineup, they are a much better team. Go figure. Looks like Chia and company might have paitned Kessel all wrong given the desperate attempts to move Savard this summer.
    -
Okay, so I’ve addressed your notion that Phaneuf and Kessel were both tossed away because no one wanted them. We know multiple teams tried to land Kessel with packages that easily could have been better than the one we gave up (unfortuneately we sucked it up big time last year and handed them Seguin, but the deal had the potential to be very favorable for us). I don’t want to miss any of your ridiculous points that make no sense for fear of being accused of being unable to process information. What else is there?
    -
Oh yes, the pre-cap trades. I actually mentioned cap era trades that you refuse to talk about, and instead pointed to my obviously sarcastic reference to the Gretzky trade. What about Gagne, Sturm, Heatley, Smyth – you know, all the players comparable to Marleau in terms of salary vs performance and the NMC? Of course you won’t answer this, because you don’t have a solution for it except to pretend that I am somehow a Leaf homer for pointing out the reality of those situation. I am a Leaf homer, there’s no doubt, but being so does not effect my ability to rationalize information. There’s a reason that Boston tried to give Savard away. There’s a reason Gagne was had for a bag of pucks. There’s a reason a leader like Smyth was moved for a dismal return. There’s a reason Sturm was given up for futures. As soon as you realize what that reason is, perhaps you’ll understand why if Marleau were made available, the return would be weak.
