Leafs Must Continue To Battle
Share

You can never give up hope especially with 51 games remaining in the NHL schedule but with the Toronto Maple Leafs currently eight points out of a playoff spot with four teams also ahead of them to get there the odds are pretty stacked against them.  Last season I believe only one team made the playoffs that weren’t already officially among the top eight seeds as of December 1/2009 and that was the Philadelphia Flyers and we all remember how they managed to squeak in.

One could argue that they [Flyers] probably should have been in the race from the first game of the season given the roster of talent they possess and eventual trip all the way to the Stanley Cup finals.  Nobody would make that same argument for this year’s version of the Leafs and while there is always a chance, I am not overly optimistic.

So if we aren’t looking at a playoff berth what are we playing for?

I’d say the Leafs are playing for hope.  Hope that some of their youth takes some meaningful strides, whether it is Nazem Kadri, Jonas Gustavsson or Luke Schenn, we want to show progress.  Another motivating factor in the back of everyone’s mind is the fact that the Boston Bruins own the Leafs first round pick in the 2011 NHL Entry draft.

If the ping pong balls fall the way they should, here is the current drafting order:

Team GP Pts
NY Islanders 29 17
New Jersey 30 20
Florida 29 26
Toronto 31 28
Edmonton 21 29
Buffalo 31 30
Minnesota 30 30
Ottawa 33 31
Calgary 32 31
Carolina 30 32

Things look pretty bleak at first glance however the Leafs are only four points from moving seven spots in the standings to a more acceptable tenth position overall.  They need to get out of that bottom five and to start making up some ground on the teams in front of them.  Who knows what a hot streak could do for them in terms of possibly even getting back into striking distance of the playoff teams.

One would also have to assume the New Jersey Devils will eventually find their games this season so we can’t afford to stall or go into another long losing streak.  The ramifications could be swift and brutal if the Leafs give up the #2 overall pick in the draft again in 2011 and I am sure Brian Burke is still actively looking to improve this team for that very reason.

ps: if you’ve watched our games against the Canucks, the way the Nucks have approached the start of games of the last season or 2 plays right into the Leafs strengths. They don’t play the trap, and thus allow for teams to gain speed through the neutral zone. This is why i believe the leafs can beat them, but we are, AS A TEAM, faster than they are. They however, move the puck better, but during some stints, one of them against the Canucks, the Leafs have looked great handling the puck, especially with the space to do it. Our downfall against the Canucks recently has been our goaltending, simple as that, if we get a good outing from Gus tomorrow, we have a GREAT chance of winning.

@cameron-last post re this because you are making things up and dont know the facts. Chiarelli knew he had to sign kessel. he signed krejci, lucic, savard and added derek morris and steve begin in the summer. he knew he was painting himself into a corner and didnt care. repeat-he signed what he believed to be his core and steve friggin begin and derek friggin morris. he moved kessel by choice not because he had to. Burke offered the best package-no one else offered more. you think Chiarelli would want to trade Kessel to a division rival if he could have garnered more? or do you believe what the MSM tells you?
    .
re phaneuf-unfortunately gullible only applies to those who dont understand that the flames players have no interest in calling out phaneuf to the press-its not the hockey way nor the canadian way frankly. save for taking you into the flames dressing room unfortunately there is nothing I can do to convince you. Mike Keenan, who has nothing to lose as he knows he will never coach again has recently confirmed-but again I dont need him to support the claim. you remember what you said after the trade Cameron re Phaneuf-it wasnt kind. how you like to rewrite history.
    .
ive answered your Heatley nonsense you know the answer. go back and read it if you need to.
    .
sturm is not an elite talent at all what are you talking about? how is he a part of this discussion? one yr left on his deal as well and injured? does this need an explanation?
    .
gagne-one yr left on his deal with concussion issues?
    .
if marleau has concussion problems or is injured and has only one yr left on his deal let us know-you must know something that everyone else doesnt.

Ugh, you don’t have to be an elite player to be comparable. The situation is the same. A team would like cap space, either to address other issues or to resign different players, and they want to move the overpaid guy who’s underperforming. If that player has a NMC, as is the case with all the aforementioned players, the return is subsequently limited by that clause in the contract. It has been proven time and time again. Sure, Sturm isn’t an elite player by any means, but a solid goal scorer nevertheless. Even with his injury, had he not had a NMC, you can bet that there would have been a miniature bidding war for him. Someone would have given up a 2nd round pick to nab him. Instead, the Kings came after him, likely got permission to speak with him, and he chose to go there. Lombardi obviously wasn’t going to give up anything given the situation, so they got him for nothing. The same happened with Gagne, Smyth, etc… The length of the contract is actually to my advantage on this point, as a team taking Marleau wouldn’t be giving the Sharks just 1 year relief of 6.9 in cap and salary, but 4 years.
    -
Anyways, you keep referencing conversations we clearly had months and months ago, and I’m sorry I can’t remember all of them. I talk to a lot of people on here. As for Phaneuf though, how do you explain Jokinen sticking up for him after he left the Flames? What reason did he have to do that? I don’t doubt that Regehr and Phaneuf didn’t get along, as many have speculated, but that doesn’t mean Phaneuf is worthless. If you reached that conclusion, good for you, but the reality of the situation is that contract status and potential return are what decided Phaneuf’s fate. There isn’t a GM in the league that would willingly take Regehr over Phaneuf.

This WIlson sideshow is getting so tiresome. Kadri is entertaining enough that I actually enjoy watching him, even if he does make mistakes. That’s more than can be said for most of the team. Still, I obviously WIlson is trying to bring the team back to where they were at day 1:
    -
    Kulemin – Grabo – MacA
    Versteeg – Bozak – Kessel
    Sjostrom – Brent – Army
    Brown – Mitchell – C.Orr
    -
    Phaneuf – Beauch
    Kaberle – Schenn
    Gunnar – Komisarek
    -
    Gustavsson – Giguere.

This pretty much deflates your whole argument. Coach loved him, says the other players were jealous of his cockdiesel attitude and matching contract, and concludes that Bouwmeester’s stupid contract sealed the deal. Pretty much exactly what I said. Regehr was a big baby, and Sutter had no other options thanks to his own stupidity.
