Leafs Must Continue To Battle
Share

You can never give up hope especially with 51 games remaining in the NHL schedule but with the Toronto Maple Leafs currently eight points out of a playoff spot with four teams also ahead of them to get there the odds are pretty stacked against them.  Last season I believe only one team made the playoffs that weren’t already officially among the top eight seeds as of December 1/2009 and that was the Philadelphia Flyers and we all remember how they managed to squeak in.

One could argue that they [Flyers] probably should have been in the race from the first game of the season given the roster of talent they possess and eventual trip all the way to the Stanley Cup finals.  Nobody would make that same argument for this year’s version of the Leafs and while there is always a chance, I am not overly optimistic.

So if we aren’t looking at a playoff berth what are we playing for?

I’d say the Leafs are playing for hope.  Hope that some of their youth takes some meaningful strides, whether it is Nazem Kadri, Jonas Gustavsson or Luke Schenn, we want to show progress.  Another motivating factor in the back of everyone’s mind is the fact that the Boston Bruins own the Leafs first round pick in the 2011 NHL Entry draft.

If the ping pong balls fall the way they should, here is the current drafting order:

Team GP Pts
NY Islanders 29 17
New Jersey 30 20
Florida 29 26
Toronto 31 28
Edmonton 21 29
Buffalo 31 30
Minnesota 30 30
Ottawa 33 31
Calgary 32 31
Carolina 30 32

Things look pretty bleak at first glance however the Leafs are only four points from moving seven spots in the standings to a more acceptable tenth position overall.  They need to get out of that bottom five and to start making up some ground on the teams in front of them.  Who knows what a hot streak could do for them in terms of possibly even getting back into striking distance of the playoff teams.

One would also have to assume the New Jersey Devils will eventually find their games this season so we can’t afford to stall or go into another long losing streak.  The ramifications could be swift and brutal if the Leafs give up the #2 overall pick in the draft again in 2011 and I am sure Brian Burke is still actively looking to improve this team for that very reason.

all of the above if you know they will be there. As for the buses, just look for buses in and around the arena, I’m guessing around back. Never been to Vancouver so I guess you will have to wander around.

I love when rookies have bad game’s ie Aulie and Kadri they get scratched or sent down. But when Lebda has nothing but terrible game’s, they just keep putting him in the line-up. Sigh.

Do the reporters at post game interviews and so forth not have the balls to ask Wilson questions like this? How hard would it be to say “Ron, can you explain how accountability is served by continuing to play Brett Lebda despite his dismal numbers, while constantly sitting Carl Gunnarsson who has outperformed him in every possible way?”

    @ moimoi28:
Also check if you know anyone who works in hotels. My friend who is a Caps friend got a tip from a hotel in downtown Ottawa (The Westin at the Rideau Centre) that the Caps were staying there. I ended up meeting Green and Backstrom on the sidewalk (corner of York and Dalhousie for those in Ottawa) and almost met Ovy and Semin. So maybe my theory of “checking the nearest hotel on gameday” isn’t the best. From downtown Ottawa to Kanata, it’s about ~20 km.

Yeah someone posted the hotel they stay at but I mean what are the chances of them actually coming down outside of their hotels…. Do the teams go out to eat and have a fun night on the town or do they just eat and stay in the hotel?

The Leafs will probably be paryting at the Roxy on Granville tonight like they do every year. They’ll be hungover tomorrow and will play like shit. I kind of feel like selling my ticket. I wanted to see Kadri play.

I’m dead serious. All the visiting hockey teams go to that place. I don’t know why. It’s a shithole in my opinion.

I still think Burke should go after Marc Savard…
    .
    Player….Marc Savard….Simon Gagne
    Age….33….30
    Cap Hit….~$4 million….$5.25 million
    Years Left….7….1
    Career P/G….0.89….0.78
    Average GP (ex. this season)….65….66
    GP Last Season…..41….58
    .
    .
    .
Gagne was traded for only Matt Walker (7th Dman) and a 4th round pick in 2011. There is NO WAY Savard should command more than that at this point, especially considering he missed so much of this season already, and is rotting on Boston’s 3rd line. It would make no sense for the Bruins not to accept a similar deal to move $4 million off of their 3rd line when they are so close to the cap. Just look at the Sturm deal. Sturm is a solid second liner when healthy, and they only moved him for a conditional pick. And it helps that Toronto is one of the only cities he is willing to waive his NTC for.
    .
    .
To Boston: Brett Lebda, 4th Round Pick
    To Toronto: Marc Savard
    .
    .
    Boom! Instant 1st line:
    .
    Versteeg – Savard – Kessel
    .
And with the Grabo line playing so well this season, that would actually make a legitimate top 6.

Lots of love for the youngsters on this site, I’ve noticed. But in my humble opinion, Kadri is well out of his element in this league for the time being. And even if he does sit out while Aulie has been shipped to the Marlies, the team has yet to lose a single goal between the two of them.

Say what you want about Lebda (I don’t generally put that much blame on a single depth defender), but he was being leaned on hard in the 3rd period last night by Wilson and he continued to gain the offensive zone with ease… which not even Kaberle has been doing as of late when five on five… and certainly not Aulie.

Don’t get me wrong… I love the upside of Aulie and I continue to hope for the best with Kadri. But winning now and keeping enough icetime for the two of them, seem counterproductive to me.

Also, for some of the earlier pages of comments, Toskala was never traded for the pick that turned out to Couture. It was actually Lars Eller, but San Jose traded up to select Couture instead.

Not that it changes anything. I’m just being a stickler, I guess. Heh.

Same premise as the Marleau idea, only Marleau would cost a little more (ie. Beauchemin + 2nd). I think Marleau makes more sense given his age, (31), proficiency at wing or center, size, contract length (4 vs. 7 years), and the fact that San Jose has nothing to potentially lose by dealing us Marleau, where as presumably Savard would help us move up to the 10th-14th draft pick zone, which would be counterproductive to the Bruins. Oh I hope I’m right about Marleau….

It appears Jiggy is very concerend about this latest groin issue. He will have an MRI done on Sunday. He’s had surgury before and if it happens that he needs to go under the knife again he’s most likely out for 12 weeks. I sure hope thats not the case because not only do we miss his goaltnding abilities we miss having his vetern’s presense in the dressing room.

Hello from cowtown, my first post to MLHS after almost a year of reading, great post re: defencemen. I was at game on Thursday and couldn’t help but notice how bad some of our forwards are at giving D an outlet from our own zone. Stronger forwards make D job much easier. Great to be on the site. Keep the faith, we will get better.
