Kadri Sent Down, Should Leafs Consider Rolston?
Share

So the Toronto Maple Leafs did the inevitable and sent down there 2009 1st round selection Nazem Kadri to the AHL (Toronto Marlies).  Whether it is longer term or just to get his 2-game suspension off the books remains to be seen but I for one hope he is firmly entrenched down there, for his own good.  I still have hope that Kadri can develop into a serviceable and possibly even productive second line centre but for now he is not even close to being NHL ready.

To really drive home that point let’s head to Alberta and take a look at Jordan Eberle.

Like Kadri, Eberle was born in 1990 and was a very highly touted 1st round selection (2008, 22nd overall) but unlike Kadri he has shown a real nose for the net.  In 17 games for the Maple Leafs Kadri has yet to light the lamp but has had a few good moments from time to time (17 games, 0 goals, 6 assists) while Eberle in 35 games has scored 9 goals and added 13 assists.

The AHL is an underrated league and a great place for young professionals to hone their craft and it’s not as if he is heading way out east or some dreary little city, he is basically crossing the street to the Ricoh Centre and still living/playing in the Big Smoke.  I hope he goes down upset, and takes out his frustrations on the ice in games, practices and training sessions.

Nazem Kadri showed glimpses of the talent the Leafs envisioned he would display on a nightly basis, now it’s time for him to develop some consistency, tenacity and hockey smarts.  The next time he gets called up I hope it’s for good and until that is going to be abundantly clear I think he should remain in the AHL.

Leafs Should Pass On Rolston

Brian Rolston turns 38 years old on February 21st and even at $2.5 million is not the type of forward the Leafs should consider bringing in.  In 21 games this season he has tallied only 2 goals and 3 assists and even last season he in 80 games only managed 20 goals so his best hockey is clearly behind him.  He doesn’t really help this season and is likely to be a major drag on the teams cap next season, even at essentially half price.

Thanks, but no thanks.

stop trading our 2nd rounder away in ideas. We need that pick. It will probably be 30-35th

It’s such a weak draft, I don’t even give a shit. I’ve yet to be impressed by even the top 5 guys in the draft. There’s a reason Burke elected to give a second 1st rounder instead of Kulemin or White.
    -
EDIT: I also think Burke will be able to get a 2nd rounder back at the draft, or the deadline somehow. Someone will want a prospect like Kenny Ryan who is further along, as opposed to a weak 2nd rounder (ie. the Jimmy Hayes trade last year).

Just a creative idea but what if we did trade Kaberle at some point for the best return, then signed A Markov as a UFA to replace him and play with Komi? Thoughts?

I’d be concerned about Markov’s asking price, which could be enormous, coupled with his recent injury troubles. I think that would be about as successful as Gonchar in Ottawa. Why not just stick with Kaberle?

    @ Cameron:

I wouldn’t be concerned about the asking price due to the injuries. This is just a scenario only if Kabs is gonna walk at the end of the year. And hopefully he could help Komi’s game given their past success. It would definitly have to be a shorter term contract though and I don’t know if he would go for that.

Kaberle = Leaf for life. If Burke cant see that by his play this year then he can just fuck right off. But IMO Burke will keep him

Imagine a DOMINATING 1st line of
    Stalberg-Didominico-Tlusty
We would be ready for playoffs in no time!

as usual, you have missed the point entirely.. but, thats fine..

a year ago you told me I couldnt see the future – now you tell me – yeah, easy to say this using hindsight.. see the joke here?

though, now that you mention it – Antropov – Grabovski – Stalberg likely wouldnt have done any worse then Kessel – Bozak – whoever

maybe you are right, maybe they would do worse.. that would leave us what? Hall instead of Seguin? and whatever else we have given away as assets to be developed or used as currency? instead – no Hall, no Seguin, very little asset currency left – and yup, you guessed it – 3rd last and another year without our high draft pick.. geee, what was I thinking, obviously Im the idiot..

tell you what.. go back to swearing at everyone and everything after another humiliating loss.. not my fault you couldnt see this coming..

He has made only one mistake that could potentially matter at all, and that is the Kessel deal, and you and I know how each other feel about it quite well, so it’s probably not worth discussing. I think he missed the boat on maximizing the return on certain players. It would have been better to keep Antropov after dragging his name through the mud, but he wasn’t certain he could resign him given his ludicrous 5 million dollar demands, so he did what he could. Not the best job, but it wasn’t horrible either. Then there was the Kubina deal. In hindsight, he should have kept Kubina, who would’ve garnered deadline interest, and not signed Komisarek. Lesson learned (hopefully). Everything else is a total win. How you can continue to argue for Tlusty, Pogge, DiDom, and Stalberg is beyond me. Yes other mistakes were made, but they were minor. Burke should be kept based on the revamp of the farm and junior prospects alone. Nonis should definitely be handling deadline day operations though. Burke admits he is not good at handling the trade deadline.

    @ Andrew R:
No, but it’ll all be better if we trade Kessel straight up for Seguin, right (which I believe you have been quoted to ‘doing in a heartbeat’)?
And if we beg and plead with Chicago, maybe they’d trade us Stalberg back for Versteeg – maybe we can throw in Caputi too – he’s worthless compared to Ponikarovsky, right?

the guy’s jaded, he tried telling anyone that would listen that edmonton would in no possible way trade mps for phil straight up so “noone get excited” or some crap…………it’s idiots like this that simply rain doom and gloom and try and corrupt real true fans that would prefer to be positive and reasonable and deal with the hand that’s been dealt and look at all the benefits of it.
some people are too far gone to be positive and that’s not only a shame, it’s a place most rational people hope to never sink to……………..that poor soul has and he’s gone.RIP
