Update: Darryl Boyce has been recalled as Grabovski will not play. Wilson will keep Kulemin and MacArthur together and have Boyce start between them.

Hot hand Mikhail Grabovski’s status for tonight’s game is questionable as it appears his significant other is in labour. According to Jonas Siegel, team services manager David Griffiths received a call from an excited and panicked Grabovski explaining in already imperfect English that his pregnant girlfriend is having contractions, and with Grabovski not responding to texts, it is assumed he is tending to her in the delivery room as we speak. The team remains hopeful Grabovski could play tonight but has a contingency plan in place to recall a Marlie to take his spot in the lineup.

The already goal-strapped Leafs would certainly miss Grabovski, who has eight goals in his last ten games, and according to Siegel so too will teammate and fan Colby Armstrong, who offered glowing praise of Grabovski’s diverse contributions to the team:

“You don’t learn to appreciate what a guy’s like until you’re with him every day. Seeing this guy play game in and game out the way he does, he’s like a rocket up the middle every night. He’s taking no-look passes, look-back [passes], suicide [passes through the middle], he’s going through, he’s getting hit, he’s getting up, he’s banging guys, he gets in a mix-up at the end of the game the other night throwing ‘em.”

Grabovski has certainly taken his offensive game to a whole new level this season, playing much more direct, driving the net and finishing on his chances, while maintaining that crazy Belorussian aura about him that Leafs fans have come to love. Congratulations on mini-Grabo, Mikhail. MLHS presents you with a pineapple as your baby shower gift.

That’s 300 words without mentioning the opponent for tonight – Rick Nash’s Columbus Blue Jackets, who enter the game on a six game road losing skid. Too often the Leafs play the role of tonic to the opposition’s woes but for once it would be nice to see the Leafs take advantage of an opposition’s weakness.

The Blue Jackets are one of the most physical teams in the league with 936 hits on the season. The not quite as truculent as advertised Leafs, 13th with 808 hits, will have to answer the physical challenge tonight.

Jonas Gustavsson starts his fifth consecutive game looking to wrap up a shaky December with a solid performance. The Leafs couldn’t seem to pull off wins when Gustavsson was at the top of his game in October and parts of November; his 2-5-0, 3.83 goals against average and .861 save percentage has done the Leafs no favours this month. The Leafs were 3-7-3 in November and are 5-6 in December; it will have to take a more balanced collaboration of the two if the Leafs are to make up ground in the second half of the season.

Steve Mason gets the start for Columbus. The third-year goaltender is in the midst of his worst season statistically with a 3.23 GAA and .900 save percentage. He is coming off of a 37-save win over Minnesota, however.

The tilt is the final action of the 2010 calendar year for the Maple Leafs – two points would be a nice way to head into a New Year of hopefully new and improved results.

Tonight’s lineup courtesy of who else but Jonas Siegel:

MacArthur Boyce* Kulemin
Crabb Bozak Kessel
Versteeg Mitchell Armstrong
Orr Brent Sjostrom
Beauchemin Phaneuf
Kaberle Schenn
Gunnarsson Komisarek

Best thing any one of you can do is if you have LeafsTV, cancel it. Because frankly you are part of the problem. I refuse to pay a dime for Leafs gear, Leafs TV and buying a ticket to a game until they satisfy my criteria for rebuilding.

Night all. Tomorrow is another day and hopefully Burke will finally plug on a player trade or just fire Wilson.

why? and get us caring for another few months to suck more cash? We all fell back into the black hole after the phaneuf and JSG trades, and will again for a little bit. All in all we will still be the 27th-30th place team

So why is it that when the AHL guys come up they appear to be well schooled with the basic skills could it be that they are getting ….better coaching?… I say fire that piece of shit RW who frankly may still be a good coach for a veteran team but not this young team, replace him with Eakins as interim see what he can do, play some of the talent you signed and brought in, let Eakins try and teach and here’s a concept…hold ALL players accountable particularly veterans who fucking should know better. make some trades for prospects or draft picks by getting rid of some of the mistakes you made (Lebda, Beau Komi and maybe even Kessel if a great chance comes along) make Kabs agree to sign or agree to a trade and if he won’t sit him in the pressbox until he agrees to a trade, build this thing right Burkie, if not then you should resign like Sutter and put Nonis in change as GM, you can sit on your ass in your office smoking your cigars or chew your tobacco or play with yourself for all I care.

It’s time for Burke to start walking the talk with testosterone, truckulance & fear rather than walking in Gay parades..because that is what I have been paying my $160 Centre Ice package…a Gay effort and gay toughness. This team is absolutely terrible and I cant understand why we all have to watch this poor display of shit…not hockey..shit! Unbelieveable..! I am old enough to remember Ballard & Paper Bags & to be quite honest, Burke & Wilson should be wearing them not the players. The players were assembled by those two clowns….Disgusting! To say the least!

I just want to understand why they think icing AHL players helps us. No joke, straight up I want to know. Thats it. All Im asking is an answer. They are not close to trade bait, not close to helping us win, no close to helping our young players develope. I dont get the logic? Its either throw the towel in and play the youth, or trade the youth for the win-now mind set. I dont get how its that hard to understand. I really want to understand the stupidity of Burke and Wilson. How can they calmly watch these games expecting to win and then tell the world they are expecting more. Our players are honeslty all MAXXXXED out of their potential and its nuts we are getting the results we are from most of them.
    Please help me understand…….please

    Consistantly Under Wilson’s Tenure:
    -GAA Bottom of the League
    -PP Bottom of the League
    -PK Bottom of the League

Burke has changed almost every player since he has got here. We are the 2nd youngest team in the entire league. So what is left? Get rid of Ron Wilson, he may have been a good coach but I personally don’t think he is the right guy for this team.

I have been a Leaf fan for 37yrs. I grew up in a Leaf family. I have lived through the Ballard years. I have seen some awful teams in that time. We all have.
But i don’t remember one as bad as this. I swear to almighty God I don’t.
What a waste Beauch and Komi are on the D. Kabs had an off night…can’t fault him overall as he is better then this…i chalk his up to a bad night. But honestly…Beauch and Komi are disasters in their own end and any time they are forced to do something with the puck. What a waste of valuable cap space on these clowns. We have better in the AHL waiting for their shot.
Again tonight I watch the game and scratch my head as to why Wilson plays guys in situations they clearly are not suited for. How does this dumb ass keep a job….we have progressed ZERO under him. In fact we are worse since he took over.
If Burke isn’t making a trade cause everyone wants Schenn or Kads then yes don’t even listen. But he needs to do something. Sitting there and saying the trade waters are just warming up or whatever he says just baits us to keep watching and listening till something actually gets done.
I am really close to calling it a season and wait till next season to watch them again. Actually I would settle for Wilson and his head right now.
He can’t get it done with this group…easier to fire the coach then trade the whole team. Well one can dream!!

Ron Wilson stated at his post-game press conference…. “Mishandling pucks, misreading rushes, and some pretty bad giveaways.
Gee Ron who’s fault is that half way through the season that your D men don’t know what they are doing?

Jordan…your question is perfectly logical…and I asked a similar one in an earlier post…I’ve come to this conclusion…I believe Burke is too stubborn and pig headed to admit that he’s screwed up bigtime…and I also believe he is doing anything possible in a feeble attempt to avoid finishing in the bottom 5..so that the Kessel deal doesn’t get even worse for him…anybody with a brain knows that the Komi and Beach signings have been huge failures, but I don’t think Burke wants to admit it by dumping them…so he sits and waits and hopes things will turnaround….he can’t pull any decent trades with the assets he has no choise but to scrape the bottom of the Marlie barrel in desperation…..Burke needs to man up…all GM’s make mistakes…the good ones are smart enough to admit it and fix them…the bad ones stick to thier guns and end up going down the tubes..

    @ Andrew R:
“You may be right, wilson may end up going, but, Burke is hesitent to do so because thats the last card he has left to play. he plays the coach card, and the next to go is Burke himself..”

More truer words have never been spoken!! You are right on the money there!!

Other GM’s are probably asking for Aulie, Kadri, Rynnas, D’Amigo, Ross or Mckegg and I don’t think Burke wants to let any of them go. So we are stuck with what we have.
