Leafs Mulling Over a Versteeg Offer

Wolski has just 16 points through 32 games played this year for Phoenix

According to the Hockey Night in Canada panel, the Maple Leafs have received a significant offer for forward Kris Versteeg Although they had not planned on moving the 24 year old, the offer was supposedly impressive enough to make Leaf management “pause”. The multi-purpose winger has not posted overly impressive numbers overall but has been heating up after a slow start, producing at nearly a point-a-game pace since the beginning of November (23 points over his last 26 games played).

While the panel did not mention any specific names, it is interesting to note that the Leafs have been heavily linked to the Coyotes, who recently sent two members of their senior management to scout the Buds on Thursday night. Purely speculative, but one intriguing scenario could see both teams flip a pair of talented young forwards with Wojtek Wolski going back to Toronto as the main piece in exchange for Kris Versteeg. For an organization with a rather modest budget, Phoenix may be inclined to part with the underachieving Wolski who is set to earn $3.8 million per season through 2012 in exchange for a more affordable alternative (Versteeg has a $3.0 million cap hit through 2012). At just 24 years of age and coming off a 65 point campaign split between Phoenix and Colorado, it’s easy to see why the Leafs could be interested in adding Wolski’s 6’3 frame alongside Phil Kessel on the club’s top line.

And what did we lose to get Versteeg. Stalberg, hasn’t scored in his past 16 games….averaging 12 to 14 min a game playing with bonafide top six talent, has 6 goals, 8 assists for 14 points on the season. Didominico, God bless the little guy…18 AHL games, 0 goals, 1 assist. Paradis is doing okay but its in the Q….15 goals, 16 assists, 31 points in 33 games.

Sweatt by the way, with AHL Manitoba Moose, 33 games 8 goals 15 assists 23 points

One point towards the other view however is that we have too many of the same type of similar smallish players like Versteeg, Kadri, Kessel, Grabbo, and to a lesser extent Bozak, Eventually we might have to move 1 or 2 of them out for bigger top 6 players. So which of these guys would you be willing to move for the right player? Tough one.

I would keep Grabo because he plays his ass off. Kessel is a bum. I think Kadri will be a keeper once he gets stronger.

lol, style of play is the reason for that, don’t be fucking ridiculous. Go try and find some players for me that are on pace for 56 points and make less than Versteeg. Yeesh, people need to get their heads out of their asses. Versteeg was a steal.

I had written Grabbo off…he has really proven me wrong. Good for him. I don’t think Kessel is a bum, but he does take nights off and plays soft on the outside at times… I would like to see him with an experienced #1 center and a big mean power winger on the left before deciding on the “bum” tag. Kadri is a mystery to me. Don’t have a handle on him yet.

What I don’t like is the assumption that Brayden IS that player. He’s not any bigger than anyone we have (in fact he’s smaller than Bozak and Grabovski). He’s also given credit for being a powerforward, when in fact he is more of a playmaker. He doesn’t drive the net like a powerforward or use his frame to dominate down low. People just talk out of their ass about Schenn all day long. Great prospect, love to have him, but the misanalysis of him is laughable. He’s a man playing against boys right now – of course he looks good.

I haven’t seen enough of Brayden Schenn to make an intelligent judgement, but ya from all the hype I thought he was 6’3 215 pounds at age 18. Any idea what his actual size is? Various websites have him at various sizes…6′ 198 6′ 1 190

6 foot 1, 190. He was bigger, but he shed weight this summer. The thing is, he is pretty developed as is. I don’t see him bulking up the way Luke did, because speed and agility are a big part of his game. He’s not some hulking power forward, but that’s all anyone gives him credit for. It simply isn’t the case.

When we got Versteeg I asked a Chicago fan buddy of mine what Versteeg is all about…he said he looks like he plays to the outside, and he does due to his size, but he has great hands, is sneaky and tricky, and will somehow get a scoring chance where nothing seemed to be there. Not a style to everyone liking, but it works for him. He is also a clutch guy and plays well under pressure in the big games.

People are also very hung up on draft position. Thomas Hickey was a 4th overall pick. Kyle Turris was a 3rd overall pick. Sam Gagner was a 6th overall pick. Benoit Pouliot was a 4th overall pick. Jack Skille was a 7th overall pick. Blake Wheeler was a 5th overall pick. Cam Barker was a 3rd overall pick. I wouldn’t trade Versteeg for ANY of these players. In fact, I think I would hesitate to trade Versteeg for any TWO of these players. People need to stop equating value to draft position. It means nothing the second the draft is over.
