A Few Leafs Notes and Your Gold Medal Thread

John Mitchell has been sidelined for 4-6 weeks after sustaining a knee injury in Sunday’s practice. With Mike Brown eyeing a return next week, this likely means an extended stay with the big club for one of Joey Crabb or Darryl Boyce. Crabb has four assists in six appearances with the Leafs and Darryl Boyce has a goal and an assist in three games played; Mitchell has 3 points in 23 games this season.

Speaking of Brown, rumours of a three-year, $2.65 million (875k per) contract extension surfaced this evening courtesy of Andy Strickland. Brian Burke tells Maple Leafs Hot Stove the reports are “untrue,” meaning no deal is done as of now. Brown’s quick rise to fan favourite status for his embodiment of truculence and whatever-it-takes-to-win attitude – be it dropping the gloves or blocking consecutive shots until your hand breaks – would suggest an extension is in the plans sooner or later.

Of course, the eyes of the nation are not on the Mitchell injury or possible Mike Brown extension but tonight’s gold medal match up between Canada and Russia in Buffalo. This is the seventh time Canada and Russia have met in the gold medal game at the World Juniors, with the two sides splitting the prior six down the middle at three golds apiece. Canada has won the last three gold medal meetings with the Russians and look to gain the all-time tournament edge tonight. Consider this your game thread.

As a trade I didn’t like the Commodore prospect. As a waiver pickup I’d be all over it.
    .
On this team he’d be a phenomenal 3rd pairing defenseman at, what, 1.8 for two more years? Considering we’re paying Lebda 1.45 to do nothing but be terrible and Commodore’s easily a better – albeit less offensive player – why not.
    .
Yes, yes, I’m well aware we already have too many defensemen.

i would try to bring kule back on that line and sub someone else in on the grabbo line like you suggested, or just bring in someone who plays similar to kule. if caputi wasnt injured i would seriously consider him. He hasn’t put up the huge numbers in the NHL, but in all other leagues hes done very well. Id leave him on the bozie line for 10 games so they can actually develope chemistry. or bring kule up to the bozie line and put caputi on the grabbo line. i remember grabbo and caputi had a little bit of chemistry in the pre-season.

Thats the thing about this site. You can write a post with your opinion, back it up relevant facts and stats and yet the response from others who don’t agree is always the same.. “your dumb” ..”your down on the Leafs” ..”ignore these guys”….are you guys so juvenile and close minded that you can’t respond like an adult. Why not for once try responding with an intelligent rebuttle, you know…maybe your clearly stated opinion on the topic supported by your reasoning, facts and perhaps some stats? …I guess its just easier to call names eh?

Picking up Commodore and waiving Lebda would be an upgrade.

    @ tron:
I dont think it helps at all. Some of the teams that I think are on Kabs list:
    Detroit: no cap space
    Montreal : no cap space
    Boston: no cap space
    Washington: no cap space
    NYR: no cap space
    Buffalo: doesn’t really need him
Philly: no cap space AND dont need him
    NJ: no cap space
    .
I realize that his cap hit will be lower at the trade deadline but up until this years deadline he would have been on the books for more than 1 season so I think we will see some of these cash strapped contenders make decent offers this year

Hagman a healthy scratch for Calgary. Stajan was previously a healthy scratch. Whitey gone after 1 season, Mayers gone after one season. Anyone who questions getting Phaneuf Shoes and Aulie for that bunch, give yer heads a shake. Not to mention Giggy for Blake and Toskoola. Aulie is gonna be great! Shoes has done a decent job, but Brown does the same job with more grit, I’d move shoes for a pick before seasons end if possible.
