What Does Loyalty Mean To You?
July 27, 2010 New Leafs Colby Armstrong and Kris Veersteg make their first appearance as Leafs at a Coca Cola promotional event at the Mastercard Centre for Excellence, the Leafs training facility in Toronto. TORONTO STAR/STEVE RUSSELL

Loy·alty (-tē)

Noun pl. loyalties -·ties

Defined as a quality, state, or instance of being loyal; faithfulness or faithful adherence to a person, government, cause, duty, etc.

In the midst of one of the worst blowout losses (7-0) in the history of the beloved Toronto Maple Leafs I thought I would pose a question, what does loyalty mean to you?  The idea came to me after I simply asked on my twitter account if there was actually a team in the NHL right now that you wouldn’t trade roster for roster with the Leafs?

I said it half joking though try and answer that question yourself. There really are not many teams in worse shape roster wise than the Leafs – sad but true.  It sparked a good debate and here is some highlites of the conversation that took place.

I received a response from a fellow ‘twit’ and friend Alex who wrote:

@tdotsports1 devils, habs, sens, oilers, wild, canes, just to name a few. It’s what we got, we need to deal with it, as frustrating as it is.

With that I responded:

strange, most of those teams are ahead of us in the standings, and HAVE been since the cap started!

So he commented:

@tdotsports1 point was that as a diehard fan for too long, it’s devastating to see other (assuming) diehards want to trade their team out.

Finally, I ended the friendly banter with:

maybe but I don’t care about the name(s) on the back of the jersey, only the name on the front… #loyaltotheend

Which brings me to the central thesis – is he loyal because he fully supports the players or am I because I truly only care about the name on the front of the jersey and the names of players are fully interchangeable for me.  Isn’t that really the ultimate loyalty?  I care so much that I expect more from our players and if they can’t get the job done I have no qualms seeing any of them go if it means a better fate for the team as a whole.

Am I not a loyal Leafs fan because I feel in a cost conscience cap-world Colby Armstrong is slightly overpaid or our captain Dion Phaneuf is grossly overrated?  While I will always support the players that don the blue and white unlike some other teams fan bases who feel all of their players can do no wrong I have to remain impartial to the actual talent and skill level of a player, jersey be damned.

For me, the whole is more than the sum of its parts.

What does loyalty mean to you?

    @ Only_crime:

It has potential to be loud….but the real party will be outside the ACC in the streets. That is what makes players want to come here, the passion of the real fans.

Yes he does. Zigomanus will answer sometimes. I’ve also had some conversations with Leafschatter, Mirtle ,Segal and a fellow by the name of Raihan Hussain . I try not to ask too many questions because I don’t want to perceived as a pest. Its worked OK so far. I’ll keep working on it to try to build a relationship with some of these guys if I can.

Definitely, for all of us pseudo General Managers out there it shows there is a lot more going on behind the scenes that we need to understand.

I love this kind of stuff, it really shows how difficult trades can be, actual dollars, cap dollars, team needs, teams surplus, contracts committed this year and future years.

Quiet as a funeral house my ass. Just put a decent team on the ice
honestly and imagine the crowd around the ACC too if this team even starts to sniff the post season.

My favourite Leaf memory is going to the Leafs vs. Sens game 7 in Toronto. The atmoshphere is amazing!!!

I was fortunate actually to see Buffalo vs Leafs ECF Game 6 and both games 1 & 2 vs. NYI a few years ago.

All the more reason to draft and develop players instead.

my favorite was probably watching game 1 of leafs vs sens here in ottawa. it was the year we swept them 4-0. I remember all the shit talking that went on cause leafs were 7th or 8th and sens were 1st or 2nd and i remember the local sens radio making up leafs suck songs and all that bull shit. After all that game 1 game went to overtime in 0-0 hockey game and sundin casually waltz over the blueline and lasers one top shelf. i swear i was the only one in my section jumping and one of the few people in the whole building going nuts i mean you couldve had a conversation with someone on the other end of the stadium it was so quite. i think that was probably my favorite either that or being at the game of curtis josephs infamous referee tackle lol although we lost that one so ill have to stick with the other one.

Equally important is to identify prospects that you want to keep and who will develop for the system you have, and use the ones you dont envision being part of your team. For example the leafs have a lot of prospects of the 3-4 line variety(taking up contracts) so will need to move one or two of them in a deal to upgrade at minor or major level.

So true, it really puts the pressure on the player personnel staff to properly assess their talent . Tough to do when some of them are only 20-22 years old.
