GDT: Capitals at Leafs (7 p.m., CBC)

After a disastrous eight game losing streak in December uncharacteristic of what one has come to expect of the Washington Capitals, Bruce Fuckin’ Boudreau’s squad has somewhat got their season back on course with a 5-2-3 record over their last ten outings. More uncharacteristically, Alex Ovechkin is currently scoring at a pace that would leave him below the 40 goal mark for the first time in his career. In fact, AO has only once in his five-year career scored less than 50 (he potted 46 in 2006-07). The low goal total surprised the hockey world in the first half of the season before news that helped explain the drop off broke in early January – Ovechkin had received a cortisone shot on his left hand or wrist. Ovechkin’s injury has certainly played a big part in the Capitals’ fall from first in goals for last season (3.82) to fourteenth so far this season at 2.77 goals per game.

The Leafs pulled off an amazing, come-from-behind 5-4 shootout victory in Washington the last time these two teams met, picking up a rare two points few teams collect in the Verizon Centre. Away from the Verizon Centre fortress where the Caps are 16-5-5, the Capitals are 10-9-3 so the Leafs are fortunate to be hosting tonight, taking nothing away from this talented Washington team. The Caps are without Semin and Fehr tonight and Boudreau will also call third string netminder Braden Holtby’s number, but certainly the Leafs can’t take anything for granted.

Giguere starts in net for Toronto. Jay Rosehill draws in for Colton Orr, who was placed on the IR today with an undisclosed injury sustained in Thursday’s fight with George Parros. Mike Brown also returns to the lineup having served his three game suspension for his hit on Ed Jovanovski.

Did anyone see that Savard got hit in the head again today and had to leave the game? Its a good thing Burke didnt trade for this guy….it would have been nerve racking watching him play every game just worrying that any hit could take him out….poor guy

    @ Tim:
It would be hard to give up on Kadri even if it meant we got Schenn

So can we expect to see Fabian Brunnstrom soon? It’s only a matter of time before Wilson slots him into a line with Kessel and Bozak. I dont mind Crabb’s game but something has got to give with that line. Bozak is starting to play really well and Kessel will always be Kessel but……

For sure man, but if he has a problem or attitude toward management, then its better to get something of value or change of scenery, sooner rather than later. I’d hate to part with him to, but thats a more realistic trade then waffle throwers.

And the Kadri for Schenn thing has got to stop. Lombardi is certainly not calling Burke all hours of the night trying to pry Kadri from his hands. And if Burke wanted to mastermind that deal, how would he apporach it?……..”I’ve given up on my guy, but we can swap guys even though mine can’t crack a 12th place roster and yours just put on a show at the World Juniors. Fair deal right?”

    Jamie Benn
    To Dallas
    Thomas Kaberle, Sjostrom

    2nd
    To Ducks
    Beauchmein
    To Toronto
    Brandon McMillan, Sheldon Brookbank.

    3rd
    To Wash
    Giggy, Versteeg
    To Toronto
    Semin, Chimera, Eakin

    MacA / Grabs / Kuley
Benn / Kessel / Semin (for now)
    Chimera / Bozak / Armstrong
    Brown / Brent / Orr

    Phaneuf / Komi
    Schenn / Gunner
    Lebda / Aulie

    Reimer
    Monster

In the offseason the team needs to look for a Puck Moving D man and PP QB

A leigt 1st line center still wouldnt hurt move kessel back to the wing.

    @ Omac13:
Semin is UFA, and Lebda plays a regular shift? Looks like 29th again. And to move Versteeg in that deal is just wrong. Giguere for Semin , and Chimera for Versteeg, pretty sure we would be laughed at by the Hockey World.

I thought this place was overflowing with smart hockey fans. Was I ever wrong.
Some of these proposals are plain embarrassing.
