Great minds think alike! I think Kessel will be a good player in the league for many years to come. As you say, he is still young and when he is able to develop some consistency in his game, particularly his scoring (easier said than done) he will be a good weapon come playoff time. The expectations were just too high for him coming in because of the price paid to obtain him, but when he is insulated with some depth throughout the lineup he will be fun to watch.

    .
Makes you think though. If I’m a GM of the most scrutinized team in the NHL, would I not spend a few days going over video on the player I’m trading for, before I commit to the high price demanded? I did recognize the need JFJ have for a goalie, and I do recognize the need our team has for top flight players. Yet snorkel face trades a first round (Rask), and Burke adds a second lottery pick for supporting first line cast. Am I just being too harsh here? I don’t get it!

    @ ingy56:
I’m with you on everything in your post. He did have some good picks (scouting?), and he was under pressure by Peddie. But trading a goalie who, in my opinion, outshone Pogge in the WJC, and was after all a first round pick for a third string goalie, rubbed me totally the wrong way! Raycroft had a hard time being consistent even behind a very defensive team. I would have spend a lot of time going after the reasons he fell from grace. Eddie was a much better choice in his later days than either Razor or Toskala as it proved.

…oh, and just to add a little bit here, he traded for Raycroft on the advice from Button, and his goalie coach. It was totally his decision, and not Peddie’s.

    @ Blue Max:
JFJ actually is a good scout, that’s where his history in the game is based, some of his picks were good (Rask, Reimer, Gunnarsson), some bad (Tlusty), but that’s the nature of the business. Trading for Raycroft was bad in hindsight, but an even worse move was then panicking and trading for Toskala. Ed Belfour was one of my favourite Leafs but he was done unfortunately, he shouldn’t have been re-signed and I think that move had Peddie’s influence all over it. There’s a book out called Leafs Abomi-Nation written by Star reporter Dave Feschuk and Globe reporter Michael Grange that is a pretty good read on the misadventures of our favourite team. There is some good chapters on the JFJ era and his relationship with Craig Button (it wasn’t good).

What trade for a goalie does everybody here dislike more?
The Rask for Raycroft deal or the 1st, 2nd and 4th round pick for Toskala and Bell??
    .
To me, I dislike the Toskala deal more as San Jose used our first (13th overall) and second round pick (44th overall) to move up to 9th, in order to select Logan Couture. This team really could use a player like Couture right now.
    .
Also, I don’t think Raycroft was given enough time to prove himself. He does have the single-season win record for the Leafs and is rated as one of the Top 30 goalies in the NHL by The Hockey News.

    @ mitchsteel09:
I dont think it has anything to do with being cocky. I dont think MacArthur is overly cocky yet he is having a breakout season here. I think it just takes somebody that can forget about the pressures outside the dressing room (media, fans etc) and just play the game

I don’t remember how much Bell’s contract was for, but it was worth every penny of it for the time he laid out Alfreddson, although an illegal hit today.
