Matt Frattin introducing himself to 6'3 200 lb defenseman Mark Alt

A little over halfway through the season, it’s time to tear our eyes away from the bottom of the NHL standings for a second and see how the future of the Maple Leafs are doing. Notable breakout players include Owen Sound’s puckmoving defenseman Jesse Blacker and NCAA goal scoring machine Matt Frattin out of the University of North Dakota. Below is a brief overview of some of the Maple Leafs’ biggest movers, either up or down, the organizational depth chart.

Stock Rising

Matt Frattin, NCAA forward: Frattin is this year’s Jerry D’Amigo as a mid-tier prospect who has soared to the top of the organization’s depth chart. His unlikely comeback to relevance has been nothing short of outstanding. After being dismissed and eventually reinstated into North Dakota’s hockey program for a variety of minor charges, Matt has seen his game progress by leaps and bounds. The rugged, physical winger has been terrorizing collegiate defensemen south of the border, torching the scoresheets to the tune of 20 goals in 28 games played. Upon completion of his senior year, Frattin will make the jump to the AHL to refine his skills and should eventually carve out a successful NHL career as a well-rounded, secondary scoring option.

Jesse Blacker, OHL Defenseman: During the first few seasons of his OHL career, Blacker had the benefit of playing a  supporting role on a historically deep Spitfires team and developing his game at his own pace. However, last year’s midseason trade to a terrible Owen Sound team threw Blacker right into the fire where he struggled mightily as he found himself in the unfamiliar position of being a leader on the blueline. This season, Jesse has really hit his stride both offensively and defensively as evidenced by his robust stat line of 40 points and a +4 rating in 42 games played, earning him an invite to the World Junior tryout camp. He should be ready for professional hockey next season with the Marlies and could be Kaberle’s heir apparent someday on the Maple Leaf blueline.

Josh Nicholls, WHL Foward: Kudos to Director of Amateur Scouting Dave Morrisonn for what appears to be yet another late round selection who could crack an NHL roster someday. Based on a strong second half finish in his draft year, the Maple Leafs gambled on Nicholls with their last selection of 2010 with the hope that he could sustain his offensive progression. And they have not been disappointed. After finishing last season with 49 points in 71 games played, Josh has already obliterated those totals with 24 goals and 37 assists for 61 points in 48 games played, good for 12 overall in WHL scoring. With good size and strong two-way play to boot, Nicholls looks to have all the tools needed to be at least a third line player someday.

Stock Lagging

Jerry D’Amigo, AHL Forward: While D’Amigo’s 2010 season hasn’t exactly disappointment, he really has not had quite the first year impact he was (perhaps unfairly) expected to have with the Marlies, especially considering preseason speculation that he could even see some NHL action at some point. The young forward has had a tough time adjusting to the faster pace of the professional game and has seen his ice-time cut back on a number of occasions. Those struggles carried over to the World Juniors where D’Amigo was more or less a non-factor and produced just 2 points in 6 games played. However, this is still only a teenager, who won’t even turn 20 until late next month, with an impressive set of skills and considerable upside who may just need another year or two before he’s ready for the Big Show.

Luca Caputi, AHL Forward: Last season’s trade deadline jettison of Alexei Ponikarovsky to the Penguins saw the Leafs net a quality young forward and Toronto boy with intriguing size and scoring ability. After 47 points in 54 games played for the Penguins’ AHL affiliate and a cup of coffee down the stretch with the Maple Leafs to get some NHL experience, big things were expected from the youngster this season. However, issues with inconsistency and injuries have cost Caputi a significant chunk of his 2010 season thus far, limiting him to just 5 points in 18 games played between the Marlies and Maple Leafs. With the big club still searching for a long-term power forward solution, Caputi is going to have to step his game up a notch if he wants to be that guy.

I understand the nature of the poll and your point. Where do I sound confused? lol

What I’m saying is you shouldn’t care what Blair implies. But I’m also highly skeptical of the honesty from these players when we know that very few of them would actually want to play in Winnipeg.

Jeff Blair is a big fat goof, which wouldn’t be so bad but he’s a BFG from Montreal trashing our Leafs and trying to get in the player’s heads. Why is this motherf—er here anyway. I say boycott THEFAN 590 when he’s on or call in and put the prick in his place. Finally, all I have to say if Fuck off Jeff Blair.

Before the season, there was a positive outlook about the Leaf’s fortunes. Optimism was high. Expectations were that the team would have improved their all-round game, maybe not winning games but making it tough for their opponents. Maybe even a playoff spot.
    .
A hot start to the season had our spirits running at an all-time high. Then the Leafs pretty well crashed and burned. But everything is not all bleek. Emergences of players like Grabovski, MacArthur, Kulimen, and Schenn was promising. Younger players like Reimer, Kadri, Scrivens, Rynnas, McKegg, Blacker, Frattin and Nicholls among others have been performing well in the AHL, junior and collegiate levels, with Reimer playing well in limited NHL action.
    .
The All-Star weekend cause quite the kerfuffle for Leafs fans. Negativity spewed like some guy with a nasty cold, anger and hatred towards the media and each other reached new heights. Frequent calls for the coaches head were announced, and even some for the entire management team. A need for talent became very obvious, but the problem of how to get said talent was all too obvious. The team’s stretch run appeared to end without the subsequent chance at Lord Stanley’s mug.
    .
Well, today I think I just tore my MCL for the third year in a row. So throw whatever you can at me you cruel hockey gods! It can’t get much worse. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. It may be bad for a while, but we are going to fight until the end. We will prevail.
    .
    Go Leafs Go!

Mckenzie say’s Ottawa is getting a lot of call’s on Chris Phillip’s and could expect a 2nd round pick in return. Imagine if he said this about one of the Leaf’s player’s. I do think someone would pay more for Chris Phillip’s that just a 2nd but maybe not. But I wonder what Ottawa fan’s think about this? Do they think Mckenzie is just out to destroy their team? lol

    @ moimoi28:
well i don’t know man, maybe you’re right. the way i see it is theres too many factors that are still unknown. do we know the way the questions were asked? or what options were available for answers? then we all know that leafs aren’t playing to their full potention and players see the struggles the leafs are going through right now. then factor in all the pressure, the rivalry with teams they already play for (could they see themselves playing for a rival team – the booing that would ensue etc.) its just too much too factor in. also think about which players voted the leafs/wilson the least favourable team to play for… would it matter to you if chris neil voted the leafs as least favourable? or jiri tlusty? hopefully you get what im saying…. just way too many unknowns about the survey and the results to actually see it as a “big” problem.

Brian Burke and Ron Wilson have been friends for 30 years or so. Burke is the Godfather of Wilson’s daughter. If you had that type of relationship with someone and you were their boss would you fire them? Burke will take the axe before he fires his friend.

    @ djstml:
Well if only 5% consider’s Toronto the least desirable location and 24% consider Ron Wilson the least desirable coach. It suggest’s that people still want to play in Toronto, but they just aren’t sure or don’t like the coach. So that 5% may be actually inflated due to a coach.
    .
Obviously, I don’t know who voted for who or what but if the poll was 300+ player’s, that suggest’s it was around 50% participation(a little less). So 75+ player’s said Wilson is the coach they least want to play for, but only 15+ said Toronto was the least desirable city to play in. We know player’s like Marleau, Thornton, and Setoguchi dislike Wilson as a coach. It has been suggested by a few with connection’s that this is what pushed Cammilleri to go too Montreal as well. Although this is not a for sure, just something that was I have heard multiple time’s.
    .
Anyway’s, I do understand what you’re saying and you’re not wrong. I just don’t like Burke’s attitude with his coaching situation, and I will alway’s maintain that Wilson is part of the problem not the solution. This is just more fuel for the fire. lol
