Leafs trampled by Sabres

The Toronto Maple Leafs visited the Buffalo Sabres Saturday night, who were hot on the heels of a loss to the Pittsburgh Penguis on the road the night before. After two straight wins this week over Florida and Carolina, the Leafs found themselves within 10 points of the eighth and final playoff spot and facing a Sabres team who sit only six points back of the eighth seed Atlanta Thrashers. Unfortunately, HSBC Arena is never an inviting place for Toronto, and reigning Vezina goaltender Ryan Miller has owned the Maple Leafs winning 11 of the last 12 meetings between the two teams.

Despite coming off a game the previous night, Buffalo came out swinging in the first period, opening the score three and a half minutes in on a Jason Pominville shot. Luke Schenn was victimized on the play as he fell while trying to clear the zone, resulting in a turnover to Vanek who was able to get the puck to Pominville at point blank range. Things didn’t get better from there, as Drew Stafford added a powerplay marker about two minutes later with Clarke MacArthur serving a hooking penalty. The Leafs just couldn’t get anything going in the first period, despite two powerplays.

The second period started with a little more promise for the Leafs, but after Miller made a great save on Colby Armstrong, the Sabres came down and Paul Gaustad beat Reimer to extend Buffalo’s lead to 3-0. Darryl Boyce, sporting a full face shield and a mean-looking scar on his nose, followed Gaustad’s goal with a tripping penalty that was more the result of some bad luck than anything else. Unfortunately, Tim Connolly was able to capitalize on the powerplay by waiting Reimer out and finding a gap , and the Leafs found themselves in a deep hole at 4-0.

Nikolai Kulemin scored a shorthanded goal on a broken play as Luke Schenn’s shot was blocked and bounced through the Sabres’ defenders. Less than five minutes later however, Drew Stafford cut to the middle on Dion Phaneuf and roofed his second goal of the game over Reimer’s shoulder to make it 5-1 Buffalo – a score that would stand as the second period drew to a close.

Giguere was in net to start the third period, and he was tested early as Buffalo started with a strong shift and pressure in the Leafs end. The Leafs did not surrender another goal, and the period meandered on until Francois Beauchemin fired it past Miller with 7:21 remaining to make it a 5-2 hockey game. Kris Versteeg created the chance by slamming on the brakes and floating a saucer pass across the ice and onto Beauchemin’s stick. Thomas Vanek scored on an unassisted breakaway with just over three minutes remaining to seal the victory for the Sabres.

The Leafs’ discipline in this game was a weakness Buffalo exploited for two powerplay goals, and the uneven flow of the game made it impossible for the Leafs to get back into the game after falling behind early. Right from the opening draw of the game, the Leafs looked sloppy: passes weren’t crisp, pucks were rolling off sticks, shots were fanned. James Reimer was unable to bail his team out on this night and it was a little disheartening for fans to see the Leafs turn in such a poor effort in front of the rookie who has given them so much support in his brief time at the NHL level.

Turnovers plagued the Leafs all night and the team that dominated Carolina so thoroughly only 48 hours prior was nowhere to be found. It’s hard to imagine this game was much more than just another instance of a young team battling inconsistency. When the Leafs play a good game, they look capable of beating any team in the league; yet, when they have an off night, it appears as though they’ll never turn the corner. The problem facing the Leafs is that based on their play up to this point of the season, they haven’t left themselves the luxury of taking any nights off if they hope to make a run for the playoffs, or just escape the draft lottery.

im real confused with them trying to trade versteeg. I mean that would mean essential that they give up on 4 players since it took 3 to get him……the teams that were interested in him would have to be contenders….did lebrun on the hotstove say versteeg and beuach or beauch and kaberle?

In no way am I saying I think that will happen, or that I’m even hoping it will happen. Still, you have to acknowledge that it is possible. Remember, last year, the very same Ottawa Senators team that currently can’t win a game wont 11 straight, and propelled themselves, undeservingly, into the playoffs.
    -
A big reason that we will never ever get that lucky though, is quite simply because of the fact that we’re the Leafs. No one cares about playing in Ottawa, but every fucking night somone is coming to their hometown, living their dream playing at the ACC, or the whole team just turns it on for fear of losing to the Leafs on CBC or TSN. It may sound biased, but I really don’t think there are any other “bad teams” that everyone gets up to play against.

Versteeg and Beauchemin. I was saying in the other thread though, if Versteeg is moved, I wouldn’t expect it to be until summer. Burke will want an upgrade, not a package of picks and/or prospects. Unless the offer is Versteeg for Schenn, it doesn’t make much sense for us.

Those are good points, but I agree with cameron that if thats what they want for versteeg it might have to happen in the summer, becuase I dont think teams chasing the playoffs right now or the cup are eager to give up on top players, unless they are of the marleu or lecavliaer variety

Tell you what Cameron, if my trade goes down in LA, Detroit, Vancouver and San Jose better do something. Don’t you think Versteeg and Beauch would welcome a move back to the wide open west, instead of Defence first East, shit if only someone would tell RW he is not in San Jose anymore. The East is a Goalie first division, Brodeur, Price, Thomas, Miller…those without don’t make the playoffs or like philly make it on the last day. I say Vancouver is in deep shit because they also rely on Booby LOu wayy too much and look where that has gotten them so far. If My trade comes down, L.A. wins a Stanley in the next two years. Its a Gilmour, Nattress to Calgary for Brett Hull type deal, St. Louis got a future 50 goal man, Calgary got a Stanley Cup.

Yep, but Lombardi is a moron. In my opinion, Schenn is a 2nd line center in the NHL, with very unlikely upside as a #1. However, he is convinced Schenn is God’s gift to hockey. Not saying the value is wrong or anything. I agree with you, I just think Lombardi is too stupid to help his team.
    -
Point and case, there is a rumor he is thinking of acquiring Lebda. I’m serious too.

It’s definitely a possibility and would be a smart move. Teams want to add, not take away. At the same time I could picture a Versteeg + Beau for Schenn + Simmonds deal (or some variation) which IMO is an overpayment on our part for those two players but a deal I would still make. With Kadri all but a lock to make the team next year (I mean really what more can he do in the AHL?) we would go into next season with a forward corps of:
    Simmonds Bozak Kessel
    Kulemin Grabs Mac
    Kadri Schenn Army
    Brown Brent Orr
    .
Thats barring any other changes or trades obviously but its a team that is young, balanced and one that can grow together. Also Bozak would have to feel alot of pressure with Kadri and Schenn nipping at his heels for the 1st line centre position and that could be just what he needs. I would be happy with that lineup.

    Trade Deadline:
    -
    To TBL: Kaberle
To TOR: Ashton, 1st in 2011
    -
    To LAK: Beauchemin
To TOR: Simmonds, 3rd in 2011
    -
    To COL: Giguere, Sjostrom, Ryan
    To TOR: Mueller
    -
    Off-Season:
    -
    To PIT: Versteeg, Bozak, Caputi
To TOR: Staal, 4th in 2012
    -
Then we run with 3 complete lines next year:
    -
    MacArthur – Grabo – Kulemin
    Simmonds – Mueller – Kessel
    Armstrong – J.Staal – Kadri
    _________ – Hanson – Brown
    (Orr)
    -
    Phaneuf – Komisarek
    Schenn – Gunnarsson
    Gysbers – Aulie
    -
    Gustavsson – Reimer
    -
Then hope Komisarek accrues enough value to ship him out as well, and in 2012 and beyond, go to town in free agency. I would also try to use all our picks and Ashton to try and trade up and grab Landeskog.

    @ Cameron:
I like that lineup alot more than the one I posted, not sure that Colorado jumps at that trade though. Mueller came in and put up 20pts in 15 games with them, even though its a small sample of games played its still very intrigueing. I know i’ve mentioned him before but i’ll bring him up again, Ryan Stoa. He’s already a 3rd liner if you ask me, he has nothing more to prove in the minors. So if its not Mueller in that trade the only difference is Staal on Kessels line, Kadri centreing the 3rd and Stoa on his wing with Army. Would still be a nice lineup.

Wouldn’t really be the 3rd line, the point is that you have 3 approximately equal lines. Imagine if we had 3 lines doing what Grabovski/Kulemin/MacArthur are doing. They’d all get equal ice time, and Staal probably the most, as he’d be the head of our PK.
    -
    @ 4evrblue:
    -
Yep, but at the same time, it seems like just about any winger performs amazing next to Duchene. Fleischmann was flying in that spot too. I think since Mueller is useless to them this year, they’d definitely have to consider what a boost Giguere, Sjostrom and Forsberg would be for them. It might mean the playoffs. We could add more to the deal if need be. A 2nd round pick, or another prospect, whatever. I’d prefer the upside of Mueller to the sure thing that is Stoa. We have loads of sure bottom six guys.
    -
Another thing, Colorado easily has the assets and cap space to replace Mueller, and the centers to attract replacements, so I don’t know that they’d really be that keen to keep him. It’s definitely possible.

Meh, they never wanted to trade Caputi in the first place. Burke had to beg and plead. If nothing else, he is a trade chip for them to acquire rental pieces at the deadline. They’d want Bozak to replace some of what Staal brings, especially since Bozak is turning into a very good PK guy. Again (and this isn’t to you 4evr, but anyone questioning), if you don’t like particular aspects of the trade, consider we have lots of other prospects and picks to sub in. The point is Versteeg + for Staal could make sense given Pittsburgh’s need for wingers.

Just to make that Staal trade a little more palatable for those that find it a little off-putting, what about something like this (I’m posting it as a 3-way, but it would really be 2 separate trades with either the Leafs or the Pens doing the dirty work and setting the table for it):
    -
To SJS: Tyler Bozak, 2nd in 2011 (TOR)
To PIT: Kris Versteeg, Devin Setoguchi
To TOR: Jordan Staal, 3rd in 2011 (SJS)
    -
Something like that. Basically, Pittsburgh gets two 25 goal scoring wingers for Staal. Anyone thinking that’s ridiculous needs to stop over-valuing Staal.

I just hope to god that Burke somehow acquires Brayden Schenn. Imagine having both the Schenn brothers?

And before someone fires a cheap shot at me, I figured Brayden would be a solid #2 center and lead the PK unit.. not saying he’s the next crosby.
