Leafs Crumbling

Phil Kessel made a statement today. A big one. It’s now put Brian Burke between a rock and a hard place. A decision must be made and it looks as though the Leafs (arguably) best sniper has put that responsibility on Brian Burke and only Brian Burke.

“It’s not working out here,” said a frustrated Kessel after being demoted to the third line during practice on Sunday. He’s now sitting on the right wing of one Darryl Boyce and one Joey Crabb. “Maybe there needs to be a change.”

Phil Kessel has sounded an alarm today, and all Leafs fans should be listening.

It’s perhaps the understatement of the year, but looking at how streaky Kessel and the Leafs have been this year, there’s no question frustration has seeped through to each and every one of the members of the Toronto Maple Leafs. That said, Kessel’s next comment is what can make the All-Star poll for “worst coach” earth-shattering for Leafs fans.

“Me and Ron don’t really talk.”

Yeah. You trade away two first round picks to bring in a young player with the potential of breaking the 40 goal plateau, and while the Leafs have struggled this season you have a head coach that doesn’t even make an attempt to keep their (should be) best player in a positive frame of mind to aid him through difficulties?

Which leads me to my next question.

Why the hell hasn’t Ron Wilson been fired yet?

“He’s so focused on scoring goals, he’s forgetting about the other part of the game,” said Ron Wilson after practice. “If you’re struggling to score, don’t be scored against.”

Yeah, that’s nice. Ron Wilson seems to be forgetting another part of being the head coach – motivation. Yet every loss the Leafs earn themselves he tends to throw a player under the bus. Maybe it’s just me, but in any business, if you are struggling you tend to lift spirits, not crush them until you get what you want… unless what you want is failure or to find a new job, and perhaps that’s what Ron Wilson is looking for.

I’m no head coach, but it eventually gets to a point in which personalities will conflict and after reports over the summer that Tomas Kaberle does not get along with Ron Wilson, the All-Star break question putting Ron Wilson in a 25% voting of “coach I don’t want to play for” and now Kessel stating that they don’t even talk and a change is needed… something is up.

Meanwhile, Ron Wilson’s Team America counterpart, Brian Burke, remains silent in the shadows. I’d expect him to come out and say “we had a chat with Kessel and it’s been resolved.” But in all honesty, at this point, how can that be believed? Brian Burke must have an amazing PR because he’s been able to silence just about every crack that starts to leak from the Leafs damn.

I, personally, agree with Kessel. A change is needed, and maybe it needs to start at the top and work its way down. After all, we can all be frustrated with the Leafs lack of scoring ability this season, but Kessel and others are still on pace for 30 goals. The fact that Brian Burke is unable to get any deal done with pretty much any team not named the Boston Bruins to aid the franchise now is becoming a glaring difficulty. Add to that a coach who is unwilling to compromise his own strategies and you have a recipe for disaster.

Maybe Paul Maurice and John Ferguson Jr. weren’t so bad after all.

I’ve posted a counterpoint to Mike’s take. Seemed easier than trying to address the entire issue in the comment boards. Cheers.

Ya its possible, but guys like Phaneuf and komisarek have been playing like this since they got here. So is it possible they didnt like Ron since day 1?lol
As for kessel, im always gonna look at him as the guy we gave up to first round picks for and shudder. But i do feel for him and understand that hes getting thrown under the bus by playing with an AHL lineup in Bozak and Crabb.

Its the system, you can’t play run and gun without a team full of gunners. Look at Washington, let them fly and they fill the net, they don’t win in the playoffs now instead of getting a #1 goalie like Tampa did they change their style to NJ type, problem is they still have no goalie. Boston, Montreal, and even Vancouver play from the goal out, when the Leafs got Jiggy (and had Gerber before) they could play defence first but Ron won’t, so loaded with AHL talent he continues to run and gun, when Reimer stands on his head, or the team we play arn’t ready, we win, but the results are in, we don’t win enough with this style, When has RW ever even tried to trapp, he can’t even do it when we have the lead. So the jury is still out on Burkes’ moves, but the electric chair should have been plugged in a year ago for RW.

Seguin is a lower rated prospect then Kessel was. So no. And of course it would help our depth, but the 2nd 1st Burke has done more then enough to build depth in the Marlies to cover up for it.

I think you’re clueless man. You’re simply expecting too much from a young team. The idea is that guys like Bozak will take the same strides that Grabovski has already taken. The problem is, Burke had to spend so much time and resources getting rid of the last mess, he hasn’t really had much left to add NHL talent. Comparing this regime to the last one is laughable.

It’s also hilariously hypocritical that you not only write off Burke clearing the deck of horrendous contracts like Blake and Toskala, but then turn around and assert that he didn’t get anything. He got exactly what you’re proposing he go out and get for Versteeg, Beauchemin and all the rest now. People like you lack the patience to see a rebuild done properly. You’re not happy when we have the youngest team developing – well what the fuck do you want from them? Does any young team have to win the Cup their first year together? Even Crosby and Toews couldn’t get that done. Expectations are retardedly high.

    Here’s a suggestion for a trade:

    To Montreal: Toronto media
    To Toronto: Nothing

    I would expect immediate results.

As a die hard Leafs fan I eagerly get ready for a Leafs game on saturday night as usual only to watch them get crushed…I put up with egg head Montreal and Vancouver fans fill up my Facebook with their witty comments..I spend the rest of the evening rethinking the wisdom of hiring Brian Burke and Ron Wilson to lead my team out of the shadows…
I get up on sunday after a good night sleep with a renewed sense of optimism as the sun shines through my window and start reading the hockey blogs and I come across a video clip of our star player talking to the media about how he and our head coach dont talk..and thinks it is time for a change and things are not working out..
Ya know…there just aint enough booze to dull the pain of being a Leafs fan…

Sorry to clarify. If the Leafs DIDN’T have Kessel, they STILL would have been 29th. The Oilers were horrible. If you think Kessel single-handed brought the Leafs up 14 points in the standings, why are we talking about Hall? Edmonton is still 30th.
