Leafs acquire Lupul & Gardiner for Beauchemin
Share

Update: Reports indicate Gustavsson left the Marlies game for precautionary reasons as he was experiencing an elevated heart rate. Doesn’t look like he’s involved in today’s trade activities.

Beauchemin nets a roster player in Lupul who will be a bit of a reclamation project Wilson can mix into the top six but a big part of the return here is prospect Jake Gardiner. A former first round pick in 2008 (17th overall), Gardiner is scoring at a point per game for the U. of Wisconsin and is the type of mobile defenceman the Leafs do not have enough of in their prospect ranks. The Leafs also get a conditional 2013 draft pick (details linked).

The 27-year-old Lupul comes with a bit of a price tag at $4.25 million cap hit for the next two seasons. After a few 25 goal, 50 point seasons earlier in his career he has since fallen off production wise largely due to a nagging back injury that required surgery and has curtailed this season and last. He put up an impressive ten goals in only 23 games last season so the potential is there for Lupul to get back to his earlier career form if the back problems are behind him. Could be an interesting experiment in the top six alongside Bozak and Kessel.

Beauchemin leaves a hole behind that’s not easy to fill. Schenn’s ice time will continue to climb, Komisarek will have to start playing a little more than a handful of minutes  and my guess would be Keith Aulie will be recalled for the remainder of the season unless Burke‘s thinking the unthinkable – Lebda assuming a permanent role. In a roster player, a top prospect and a pick, the Leafs seem to have gotten good value for a player they originally signed out of the FA market.

Burke will hold a press conference at 4:30 p.m. There are some rumblings the trade activity isn’t done for the day (potentially involving a goalie on the way out) as Burke starts his dealing for this season at a similar time he pulled off the Phaneuf and Giguere deals last season… a few weeks ahead of the trade deadline.

This is a nice deal – it is basically the reverse of the Blake/JSG deal done last season with Anaheim. People seem to be missing the business end of this deal. This is a pure cap deal. The debate with Dougy and Cameron is amusing..

@Dougy – dont worry about it man – your assessment was pretty accurate (though, in my opinion, this is still a good deal). Beauchemin represents very low value for his contract. Anaheim wanted someone “useful” they could fill some minutes with on their D and someone with a decent shot, with less cap and term then Lupul – which is what they got. Lupul, as you so accurately pointed out is a mess of a contract. The kid has talent, but, his contract is so much worse then the blake contract we dumped last year. Blake may be overpaid, but, he is an effective player in the right role (ie 3rd line) – whereas Lupul is a complete mess – big contract, big term and likely wont play many games. Really sad actually – great talent, no health.. So, Burke dumps Beauchemin (which he absolutely had too and would do the same with Komisarek if he could) and grabs a brutal contract in Lupul and a decent prospect. This is a pure cap deal where Burke absorbed a really bad contract in exchange for a good prospect – and Beauchemin went back the other way to make things work…Dougy, you need to understand – Cameron will insist everything he says is right, will attack anyone who disagrees and all of his opinions are either based on whats best for the blue and white and “what Burke says”.. the average Leaf fan can only comprehend positives and follow right along – dont let it get to you..

@ Cameron – LOL – the amount of times you contradict yourself is an absolute joke. So – Burke gets back a former 1st round pick and now this suddenly means that Beauchemin is such a great player? and NOW, a 1st round pick is so important – when the Leafs trade them, they are over valued right? and pssst – a former 1st round pick IS NOT the same thing as a 1st round pick – not even nearly the same.. but, trying to explain this simple point to you will be pointless – This was a pure cap deal – nothing more, nothing less – to equate this into value and worth for Beauchemin the player is an absolute joke..

having said all of this, I like this trade.. Burke did well, and if Lupul pans out – wonderful, bonus, etc.. if he doesnt, Burke can bury the contract or Lupul may end up retiring if these injuries keep up.. moving a player like Beauchemin and getting a good prospect back is a win… leveraging MLSE money to do so – priceless.. we should be doing more of this type of thing..
