Versteeg linked to the Flyers, Penguins

With the February 28th trade deadline approaching quickly, one player whom opposing GM’s appear to be targeting on the Maple Leafs‘ roster is Kris Versteeg, acquired this past offseason in a slightly controversial trade with the Blackhawks. Burke anted up three young pieces in speed demon Viktor Stalberg and prospects Chris Didomenico and Philippe Paradis, to land the versatile Cup winner, which led some to argue the price may have been a little too high. Considering that Versteeg has almost as many goals as Stalberg has points, Didomenico is in the ECHL and Paradis is in the midst of a mediocre overage season in the QMJHL, early returns appear positive.

When pressed by the media regarding which teams had inquired on diminutive winger, Burke’s reply was a simple “who hasn’t?”. CSN Philly reporter Tim Panaccio explains that Versteeg is likely on the Flyers’ radar for an upgrade at forward, but could cost 21 year old American power forward James Van Riemsdyk in return. Versteeg has also been recently linked to trade talks involving the Penguins, who are very much in the market for some scoring help, given the prolonged absences of Malkin and Crosby.

Just how well-rounded is Versteeg’s game? The 24 year old is one of only six NHL towards, along with Ryan Kesler, David Bolland, Paul Stastny, Patrick Sharp, and James Neal who can boast about having 20+ blocked shots, 20+ hits, 40+ takeaways, and a 2:1 takeaway/giveaway ratio, while still being on pace to produce at least 20 goals and 50 points. Not a bad group to be a part of. Plus, he already has a Cup ring on his finger at 24. As stated on numerous occasions by Burke, no one is untouchable if the right deal comes along, but I imagine that it’s going to take a significant offer to pry away such a promising young player.

I know that some people would like to see Steeger gone,..but in my opinion they would have to get a huge deal to move him,….

No, just cause the talk was whether we wanted Caputi or Tangradi before we obtained him.

If it’s Versteeg for JVR Burke would do it. JVR is exactly the winger Burke wants and this team needs. He may not be tough as he only has 55 hits this year, but he has the size and skill to open up space for Kessel.

We don’t need another soft winger,…unless you are going to move someone else as well.

Don’t see why we’d trade him unless we get Kessel a centre. We need youngsters like Steeger (who has won a cup), and now that we have him, trade him for someone just a few years younger? crazy talk. Let our youngsters grow together and have a chance to find consistency with each other damnit :p

Unless Versteeg is asking for a trade, I would keep him. The article gives you a good indication of just how valuable a player he is….lets face it, its probably tough to go from Stanley Cup champion to the Leafs current situation…I think he may have hockey depression right now….but he’ll come out of it..

    @ wiski:
Very interesting article I think that Komisarek is lining up for a Kubina trade ie. Burke want the cap space back.
    -
I hope that the right trade comes around a straight Versteeg for JVR doesn’t sound that great to me.
    -
Now Malking for Versteeg, Kadri and Kaberle or something like that sounds much better.

That would be sweet! think theres a hope in hell of it happening though? I think the Pens playoff hopes are done for this year with injuries and who even knows if Crosby will be back … would they do that deal to make a playoff run knowing that they won’t get deep?

We have to consider that with Caputi hurt we really did not see him perform up to his liking he had 5 points in just 11 games and a plus 1, 30 pim and 31 shots…I think if he was playing a full season on the farm then we might of seen a way different player. I still say Caputi has a chance at a career with our Leafs,

Philly has the cap space to take on Steeger and they have to make a cup run this year and Steeger has been there done it. That kind of experience is invaluable. JVR is an easy trade to make as Philly have all kinds of size and not enough dangling. I would not be surprised to see this trade done. From the Leafs point of view…JVR is American which is a prime requisite for Burke and he is big. He and Versteeg have similar numbers…so no biggy there. Pittsburgh have nothing of interest to me in their system. They can go fuck themselves.
