Quick Q&A with Dave Morrison on Jake Gardiner

Some would suggest the most valuable piece and true target for Brian Burke in last week’s Francois Beauchemin deal is University of Wisconsin defenceman Jake Gardiner. Undoubtedly, the inclusion of Joffrey Lupul and his $4.25 million cap hit was designed to make the monies work from Anaheim’s perspective. However, the term “salary dump” can be a bit demeaning in the sense that there was some reason Lupul received the contract he did from Philadelphia in the first place, and statistical indications suggest he can still be a decent second line forward in the NHL. That said, there is no foundation for this deal without Anaheim’s inclusion of the 20-year-old Minnesota native.

Gardiner is in the midst of a point-a-game (8 goals, 24 assists for 32 points in 32 GP), plus-20 season in his third year with the Badgers of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. His offensive skills from the backend are reflective of his position switch from forward to defence in his final year of high school hockey; similarly, so is the need to work on his game away from the puck as he continues about his development path.

MLHS was able to get a few quick thoughts over email from head of amateur scouting Dave Morrison, who is currently attending a Five Nations tournament in Europe.

1) I know Brian said that it’s ultimately up to the player as to when he leaves college, but when do you feel he’ll be ready to make the jump if he so desires?

DM: “He will be ready when he decides.”

2) Areas he needs to work on to reach the NHL level?

DM: “Like any young player, strength and maturity in his game.”

3) Was this a player the organization has had it’s eyes on for a while, or did the opportunity to grab him pop up and management jumped at it?

DM: “We monitor all players and therefore when a trade is made and a young player is involved we go after a player we like and feel will make our organization better. Jake fit the bill.”

4) What are his best attributes and what is his projected role at the NHL level?

DM: “Skating and his ability to skate the puck out of trouble and move it up the ice. Potential top 4.”

5) Does he have a physical dimension to his game?

DM: “He has decent size, is strong on his skates. Responsible physical game. He may need time to adjust to the physicality of the pro game but that is normal with any young player.”

Versteeg had GREAT value, but not to us. He was a miscast. Really, you think our 3rd line RW will make or break the team in the future? He also clearly wanted out, think about it

Although like I said I wont miss Versteeg I am frustrated with what way we’re going…… Lottery picks for Kessel and a “quick re tool” now we’re taking picks again???
I just want to know what the fucking plan is!

If Philly goes out early in the playoffs, those picks get better, it’s not necessarily a 29th place selection.

Versteeg wanted out. This is decent return when you have no leverage.
Look at what Heatly got Ottawa and he is a 50 goal guy.

Maybe after I get over my Hissy Fit, I will agree. Right Now I am looking at the on ice product we have to watch for the Foreseable future and it just got worse.

I’ve got to let this sink in a bit because at face value I think he could have gotten more. Lets see what else happens. To be honest Steeger has been a bit of an odd sock on this team with his style of play so I won’t really miss him that much. I had just hoped he could have been packed with another player for something much better than a 26th or 27 pick in a bad draft year.

True. I hope to God Grabovski doesn’t break his wrist again and then we get shut out for the rest of the year.

No I don’t believe that Versteeg was the answer by any means, but that’s a lot of wheelin and dealin (Stalberg, Dido, Paradis, and now Versteeg) to get back to square one.

This trade was no surprise to Versteeg. Mentioned to me this afternoon that he’d heard Philly mite be the spot. Turns out he was right

Quite possibly, I doubt very much that Dallas moves him before the deadline, but perhaps Burke trades for his rights before July 1st in order to exclusively bargain with him and convince him to come here. I believe there is something behind the rumours that Versteeg wanted to move on (perhaps Wilson?) and we all know Burke acts on those requests fairly quickly. Also, Burke is realistically looking at his chances of getting to the playoffs this season and realizing it’s just not in the cards and it’s better to maximize his assets. I don’t know about others here, but I am not going to be satisfied fighting for the eighth spot every season and I don’t think Burke is either.

3rd line forward at the end of the day. We got exactly what Fisher got in return. Why is that bad?

Just my philosophy bro, I would rather have 24 year old proven player than a late first round draft pick that may or may not pan out

    Imho

I’m seeing a lot of Weiss talk on this board right now. I hope that’s not the plan. Nothing I’ve ever seen from him indicates “1st line C” talent. Do you guys actually want Weiss, or do you just want another trade for the sake of a trade.

Back to the actual trade today…

Maybe Burkie is going to use this cap space to go after Curtis Glencross in the off-season, who is starting to put it together in Calgary and is also not small / plays PK as well.

Would you do Versteeg for Glencross +1st +3rd ?

all we need now is to trade kaberle for a top prospect and a 2nd or another 1st… while this draft may not be super deep on talent… same things were said about the 2004, 2006, 2007 drafts and the likes of mike green, travis zajac, tj oshie, wolski, david perron and cluade giroux all taken in the mid to late 20′s of the 1st round… i have hope our scouts will get us a player…. a player i think burke is really going to gun for is a power forward named Mark Mcneill…. watched him all year and it would be a huge step forward getting this kid… hes a mix between mike fisher and brendan morrow.

    @ Gby:
Philly would have to do that…we no longer have Versteeg. Just kidding….I know what you mean, but you will have to over pay for a player who is having a career year in Glencross.
