GDT: Leafs vs. Kaberle’s new team?

Brian Burke wasn’t kidding when he said he likes to move in advance of the NHL trade deadline. The Leafs GM, fresh off of moving Francois Beauchemin and Kris Versteeg, has been reported to be in talks with Boston concerning Czech blueliner Tomas Kaberle. Unfortunately, it seems that Toronto’s own 1st round pick is not involved in discussions at the time, although it is surely a desired target in Burke’s negotiations.

The movement of Kris Versteeg clearly reduces the talent on this team for the near future.  We will only truly be able to analyze the position of Leafs management (“retool” or “rebuild”) at the conclusion of this season’s trade festivities.  However, ignoring allegations of player unhappiness, the movement of Versteeg for picks definitively falls under the ambit of a rebuild.  While there are good points to be made with respect to Versteeg’s salary and his ambiguous role with relation to the “top six, bottom six” mentality, there is no denying that he is an asset on any NHL team.  He is also one of those players that gives true meaning to the concept of “team depth”, as he is effective in a third line role, with the potential to fill in admirably on a higher line if needed.  Yet it should be repeated that until Brian Burke’s plans are revealed in full, one cannot conclusively make a statement about this trade.

The news that Tomas Kaberle appears willing to waive his infamous NTC to go to the Bruins could be the decisive move in indicating the path that Leafs management is taking, contingent upon the return that Toronto receives.  While TFP is reporting that the Leafs’ 1st is not currently involved in these discussions, it would be remiss of Burke not to target this asset in his talks.  If Toronto does somehow manage to regain their pick, it would almost surely signal a concerted movement from retooling to a full out rebuild.  The latest news on the Twitterverse is a mishmash of reports varying in their comments on the proximity of this deal.  The MLHS take is that Tomas Kaberle has finally decided he would go to the Bruins if a deal can be reached, but he has not yet waived as a trade is not imminent.

Despite the ongoing conversation between the two opponents, Kaberle seems ready to draw into a lineup that will once again feature James Reimer in goal.  Tim Thomas will backstop a Bruins team that is fresh off of two significant losses against the Detroit Red Wings.  For the Leafs, the Grabovski line has been reunited, and Joffrey Lupul will hit the ice alongside Bozak and Kessel.  With the trade of Versteeg and Colby Armstrong’s injury, Hanson will suit up on the third line with Boyce and Sjostrom.  Those that still harbour playoff aspirations should note that the Leafs need roughly a 19-7 mark to be in the mix for that eighth spot.  Obviously, they cannot afford too many more losses.  A matchup against Thomas and the frustrated Bruins will be a difficult test for this rapidly-changing team.

What a great game by the Leafs. Grabo is a gritty player with the heart of a tiger. All this Kaberle trade talk is almost sickening.

Anyway, I gotta hit the sack. (Why did that sound so funny to me just now?)
    .
Great win by the boys tonight.
    .
Before the game I was prepping myself for the worst. I thought the B’s were going to hand it to us, and Kessel was going to need a full time psychiatrist.
    .
RW – Do not mess with that Grabo line again. Together they are greater than the sum of their parts.

    To Toronto
    Paul Stastny
    Brandon Yip

    To Colorado
    Kadri
    1st(Phillys)
    Gunnarsson

Too much, or even? I know people will be pissed about the Kadri included, but Stastny or Kadri? Who would you rather want?

If Lupul could be the top 6 he once was that would be HUGE for us. Top 6 wingers would be scratched off with Lupul, Kessel, Macarthur, and Kulemin

Hail_Grabovski Do the Bruins have rights to the moon? As that seems about right for Kaberle given they value Kelly as worthy of a 2nd. #Leafs

    @ Kinger:
would never trade Kadri for Stastny. Might be fair but just not in me to do it

I dont agree that seguin what the bruins would move… the leafs pick in this draft is not gonna fetch a player near the quality of seguin… if the leafs really want their pick back give it to them and keep seguin in my opinion

So basically Kessel and Seguin for Kaberle and a top 5 player in a weak draft? The Bruins fans hate Kessel and now they going to trade Seguin to the team that traded for Kessel? The optics would be horrible from a PR standpoint strictly and you could argue that from a hockey perspective too. Just wait till the offseason and sign Kaberle as a UFA.

Thats what I said, they wont do it because they know they can get him as a UFA. If they knew they may not be able to they would be all over that… They originally intended the Kessel trade to be Kessel for Kaberle + a 1st…. If they traded Seguin for Kaberle looking back they would have Kaberle + a 1st + a 2nd for Kessel… which is still more than they originally wanted …

Kaberle and Phillys 1st, for Seguin.

    @ Mun:
Because there is not a guarantee Kaberle will sign there when he’s a FA, how do you know some team won’t blow his socks off with an offer?.. Then the Bruins are fucked.
