Quick Q&A with Dave Morrison on Colborne

The news of Tomas Kaberle’s exit, despite considerable advanced warning, set in as reality this afternoon and was immediately followed by a feeling of sadness as the Leafs bid adieu to their well-liked longest tenured member and remaining tie to prelockout playoff hockey in Toronto. A surprisingly handsome return of first round prospect Joe Colborne, Boston’s first round pick and a conditional pick that could end up as high as a second rounder has mixed the emotions with an excitement for a brighter future.

Burke‘s persistence since taking the reigns from interim-GM Cliff Fletcher in getting premium value for this asset seems to have paid dividends today. Offered merely a low first round pick by San Jose for Kaberle-plus over the summer when the no-trade clause wasn’t in play according to Darren Dreger, Burke has now picked up a prospect with top six potential, a first round selection and another pick to be determined for a quarter season of Kaberle. The centerpiece of course being 6’5 21-year-old forward Joe Colborne, former 16th overall pick in 2008 and currently of the Providence Bruins. Colborne was an asset Burke demanded and reportedly stood firm on in trade negotiations over another name discussed in Blake Wheeler, who ended up in Atlanta today:

@HackswithHaggs
Hearing #bruins have been talked into replacing Wheeler with Joe Colborne in the Kaberle trade, and that things may be moving now.

Head of amateur scouting Dave Morrison was able to answer a few questions over email about the newest Leaf:

AB: Was this a player you got a good feel for when scouting Tyler Bozak in Denver?

DM: Yes, we had also watched him in Camrose of the AJHL.

***

AB: What progress have you seen in Colborne’s game since his days in the AJHL?

DM: His two years in Denver was well spent. He continued to improve his overall game and gain strength. Have not seen him recently but from all accounts he has been progressing well. He is a big young man, takes time for them to reach physical maturity.

***

AB: And is that your take on the criticism that Colborne has the size but doesn’t use it? Do you see him as still learning how to take full advantage of it?

DM: I’ve never heard that criticism before. He is like any young player that has to learn what they can and can’t do at the pro level and being strong enough to find out is part of that. Most skill players use their body well to protect the puck or gain position but are not necessarily aggressive physically.

***

Reader Question: How is Colborne’s skating for a big guy and what do you project his ideal playing weight at?

DM: Joe is a good skater. Not sure what his ideal weight is as he has grown in the last few years. That is something he and our training/strength staff will figure out.

***

Reader Question: He’s on a 2 on 1… shoot or pass?

DM: Whatever the right decision is.

***

Reader Question: Does he have #1 center upside, or is the reasonable goal top six? A player comparison to a current NHLer?

DM: Do not like to compare, not fair to the player. Hopefully he’ll be top six.

***

Clayton Hansler will chime in later tonight with some Q&A with Joe Colborne himself, who is having a media availability after tonight’s Marlies – Bulldogs game.

When he stops spitting on them at pressers….haha I’d imagine not very pleased, I know he would be under the gun if I was his boss. He brought in and signed a lot of these guys to new deals, so I think management wanted him to clean it up.

Why do we need Bogosian? Too similar to Schenn (not as solid now, but higher all-round potential)
WHY? 20 year old D man who plays with a edge(like schenn) and can put up points on the PP
I dont know you tell me WHYNOT?

    He would cost 2 1st and a 2nd we’ve done that before…

Similar to Schenn- a right-shooting Dman.
    .
We need top 6 forward help, and a smooth-skating, minute-muncher 2-way Dman like Ehroff.

Burke has not changed course. I repeat Burke has not changed course, do you think he could of done this with last years roster? Not a chance, with greater assets come greater rewards. Simple as that.

Of course he’s changed course. He did it the other day when he was trying to get roster players for Versteeg and couldn’t. How do I know this? He told us…lol.
    .
He has stated many many times he wasn’t interested in prospects and picks in trades, that’s why he went after Dion rather than prospects from the Flames. Last year’s roster had very tradeable assets in Stajan, Hagman, Stempniak and Poni. So yes, he could have accomplished something very close to what he’s done this week.

    @ djamon:
Actually he said all along he was trying to acquire player for now and in the future, Aulie was part of the Phaneuf deal too, remember… He is definitely staying course, the big name player he is after is not always available so he just gets the best possible return for his assets. I’m pretty sure he will flip a pick or prospect for a player to help the team now, before the deadline…

No he hasn’t, every player except free agents is 21-23 yr. old kid with tons of upside, he got a Lupul to replace Versteeg, which he admitted was a mistake that he has tried to fix, getting Gardiner was the key to the deal. Lupul was and probably will be a stop gap in the lineup unless he puts up large numbers.
    -
Sorry not in Burkes wildest dreams was he going to trade those guys and obtain talent like this, he landed Phaneuf but again the key was Aulie and it took 4 players to get them. We now have prospects, picks and roster guys that could be moved for much better assets than last year.
    -
This is a restock and retool that has taken place from day one Burke got hear, poor fucker was strapped with some of the shit he inherited.

Yes he told us he wanted roster players, who wouldn’t want JVR? Shoot for the stars settle for a first and third, still not bad and he has repeatedly told us picks mean nothing. There just more chips. Which he will put in play for the right deal.

I have always been in favour of trading Kaberle. I considered him soft and plus in my opinion our team is not a contender yet.

Today, after listening to Kab’s interviews, and getting a loud a clear confirmation that he wanted to be LEAF, I feel guilty and bad for wanting him gone. ( although I still like the trade). Having joined Boston, he still lovingly recalls leaf fans and is very gracious. That, despite not being offered a contract. His graciousness speaks volumes about his decency.

    @ Tim:
I suggest you take a look at Burke’s transactions since he got here. You’ll see the overwhelming majority of his trades have brought back players, not prospects or picks. And this was his game plan all along, he said as much whenever he was asked about it.
    .
And as far as the assets he’s traded recently, Versteeg is the only one he didn’t have last year. So if he had chosen to trade Kaberle or Beauchemin, as well as Stajan et al then his return would have crushed what he got this week. Last year he wasn’t interested in trading those guys…this year he was. That’s called a course change!
    .
I love what he’s done this week, I wish he’d had this philosophy all along. It’s not like keeping these guys for another year made us any good.

I think if Gunnarsson is playing the PP with Phaneuf it might make scoring from the point a little easier … simply because instead of having two lefts (meaning only one one-timer possibility).. theres a left and a right…. making two one-timers.

I loved him as a player, but he was the wrong kind of guy for a team so far away from being a contender. His skill-set is better served on a great team.

i LOVE this kaberle trade. finally, we get one on the B’s. if they end up needing to give us the conditional pick, that’d be two 1sts and one 2nd for kabs. makes the kessel deal seem more palatable for sure.

i wish kabs all the best, and thank him wholeheartedly for the players in return. joe colborne could be our keith aulie. two smooth skating giants. one up front. one in the back. both with decent hands for their position. those two could be the type of players the playoffs are made for in a few years time.

and oh yeah, we now have 2 first rounders in THIS year’s draft. kudos mr. burke. you’ve had a good two weeks.

we will miss kaberle on D more than many think, as he is a world class talent, and has been for 10 years.

our time is on the horizon. we have a good core. we have tons of prospects in the cupboard to both develop into roster players and also to deal in trades over the coming two years as we beef ourselves up to contender status.

now. sign brad richards to a 3 – 5 year deal for $8 million a year, and it’s officially our time again.

i’m calling 2014 the year that luke schenn and keith aulie are the most feared tandem in the NHL. shutdown pair, with phaneuf and gardiner as the power play unit, and the 2nd pairing for 5-on-5 play.

aulie and schenn, playing 25 minutes of shutdown D will bode well come playoff time.
