Colborne arrives in Toronto

"I can't explain how excited I am to finally be here, to get the blue and white on and start playing."

Toronto has not seen a Providence Bruin since the team last visited on March 4th, 2009. But as rumours of Tomas Kaberle’s trade to Boston slowly turned to fact, the Rhode Island AHL club certainly received a spike in their traffic from North of the border.

Brian Burke, President and General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Friday that the Toronto Maple Leafs had acquired former first-round pick Joe Colborne along with a first round selection in the upcoming draft as well as a conditional 2012 second round pick. Colborne, hailing from Calgary, Alberta, has spent 55 games of his very first professional season working with the Providence Bruins, AHL affiliate to the NHL’s Boston team of the same name.

“Early in the afternoon I got a call from my agents,” said the 6-foot-5 forward, who towered over the media at Ricoh Coliseum as he relived the day’s experience following a 4-3 Marlies loss on Friday. “I’ve talked to I think every single person in the Toronto organization today,” said Colborne with a grin.

Having arrived only ten minutes prior to the press conference, Colborne had yet to talk to his new coach, or greet the members of his new team.

“I can’t explain how excited I am to finally be here, to get the blue and white on and start playing.”

Although barely 21, the AHL rookie commanded the respect of the media with his firm eye contact and well-rounded thoughts – a trait regularly seen among those who have progressed through the university ranks, possibly a trait Burke admires.

“When you play four games in five days, you can’t really prepare for that in college,” said Colborne as he responds to a question about the leap from the WCHA to the AHL. “I feel I have taken really good care of my body, and have worked really hard this off-season to try and prepare myself.”

As the words exit the mouth of Colborne, it becomes all the more apparent what caught the interest of Burke – the same General Manager who assigned the organization’s director of player development to coach the AHL club. Hard work, preparation and taking good care of one’s body, all key phrases uttered by Marlies Head Coach Dallas Eakins on a continued basis and likely the mantra that kept Eakins on board while the rest of Jeff Jackson’s staff were relieved.

“Hopefully he sees me going out there and being a pretty big part of this team, and I will do whatever he wants,” said Colborne, anticipating the relationship he will have with his coach.

“Everyone echoed that they have been watching me quite a bit, and they liked what they saw so don’t go and try to be something I’m not.”

What Burke liked about the tangible elements of Colborne’s game should surprise no one that has heard Burke’s famous “Truculence” speech.

“I like to have the puck on my stick as much as possible, whether that’s skating through the neutral zone and setting up a play on the rush, or controlling it down low using my size. It’s something I’ve really tried to incorporate in my game now that I’ve been putting on weight in the last few years. I’ve really taken advantage of my size down low.”

The stitches over Colborne’s left eye are indication of ‘using his size.’

In a team starved for size up front, the biggest Maple Leafs centre presently being sophomore Tyler Bozak standing 6-foot-1 and 195lbs, Colborne’s towering frame will be a welcomed addition. On a team that turned to Darryl Boyce and Joey Crabb to provide jam in the corners, Colborne’s attitude is a welcomed fit. And finally in a Burke system where University graduates are praised, and recklessly selling off assets in hopes of a high draft pick is frowned upon, the acquisition of Colborne makes perfect sense.

The Maple Leafs have unquestionably lost a large piece of their past in Kaberle, but in exchange they receive a young man who will likely play a big role in their future.

On reuiniting with former University of Denver teammate Tyler Bozak:

“Well we got to be linemates for most of my first year and he’s such a prolific player and great skater and I love playing with him. We’ve been talking about three or four times a day he’s just been giving me tips and he’s so excited. I’m looking forward to  meeting up with him again and maybe being a linemate with him in the future.”

Yesterday was simply amazing. It felt like the 28th came early. The Leafs started the ball roling but the St.Louis Blues went nuts. Brewer ,Eric Johnson gone? WOW just fuckin WOW. You have to wonder what the Av’s are thinking for sure.

I like that deal for the Av’s. They have tons of offence but their defence wasn’t strong at all, good deal for both.

    File this under very interesting.

I read in the Toronto Sun today that Kessel is in play to be traded. They quoted a few sources telling them that Kessel is being dangled by Burke.
The Kings are looking for more scoring punch….PLease be Schenn please be Schenn.

Hard to say but it seems to that the Av’s gave up a lot and Johnson has never reached his potential (yet) due to that injury. Its a bit hard to gauge as I don’t see enough of either team to be sure but Stuart is an awful good player as is Shattenkirk

So the leafs are now buyers according to Dreger. My question is are they going after expiring contracts? RFA’s? or guys who have some years left? You would have to think Burke would be looking to make moves that would help us more next year then this year.

i certainly hope so. i love the picks we now have and would love to actually use them as draft picks. if burke does make deals using some of them, i only hope its for very very young players. our core is all either mid 20 or under. so i think he should be focusing on that age group.

I listened to Burke’s presser after the Marlie’s game last night and when he said he is gonna use the 2 1st round pick to see if he can move up in the draft made me feel like he is eyeing someone in this draft. I believe that guy is Landeskog only because of the way D’Amigo is playing with him they both make each other much better. If we can finish out of the bottom 5 and do have the chance to move both picks and maybe a prospect to move up what teams do you think will be willing to trade with Burke…. I am thinking what teams do I think will be bottom 5 here is my list of 5 bottom teams…5.Ottawa 4. Edmonton 3. NYI 2. Florida 1. Colorado…5 is bottom team. What do you guys think about this.

If I were Leafs GM, and I’m not, but if I were I would explore a deal for Kessel. Not saying I would do it, but I would explore the return, and look at the overall plan with the future in mind.
For example, what if Atlanta offered Zach Bogosian and their first rounder this year. Of course Bogosian is a question mark right now at 20, but what will he be at 22-23-24.
Or what if LA offered Braden Schenn and a pick or prospect.
I will say this, when Kadri is ready, there may not be room for both him and Kessel because of there size and lack of toughness. Of course Kadri is trying to get stronger.

This Colorado trade only make there fall down the standing even more likely. they loss a bit of there offense and now with Duchene hurt indefinitely and trading there goalie for Elliot they are in big trouble.

Last time I checked offense was never a problem for the Av’s, it’s their defense that is losing them games. This deal makes them better. EJ is a potential franchise defender. This deal is a really good deal for the Av’s.

I know it’s been said a million times, but I honestly believe that Brayden Schenn WILL play for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Brian Burke is a man of action, and he wanted Schenn at the draft, and he wanted him bad. That being said, I 100% guarantee you that the Schenn brothers will play for Toronto.

Secondly, I really hope that Colborne isn’t dissected by the Toronto Microscope. This is a kid fresh out of the sheltered University hockey life and into his first pro season. It’s going to be rough and he’s going to get critisized. Burke can’t call him up and force him into a position with the pro club where he is going to struggle. He just needs to take his time and develop slowly.

Maybe we’ll have a strong 1-2 punch in Colborne + Kadri some day?
