First impressions of Colborne

Having taken in Joe Colborne‘s debut in today’s Marlies – Griffins game, here is Kats’ first blush scouting analysis of the newest Leaf:

Big, rangy pivot, fairly swift and quick .. first two-step quickness leads into wide horseshoe stride, only a few required to hit top speed .. stride gets slushy when hurried .. net presence, if not directly in front – especially on PP today – he’s hovering in dirty areas .. entered dangerous slot area to pick up rebound and snap first as a Marlie .. seemed to handle the puck very little, passing it off and trying to get to the net – also part unfamiliarity being his first game .. gravitated toward where the puck was defensively leading to openings where a center would cover, like down low by the top of the crease .. also follows puck carrier instead of finding open space to be an option off the rush .. has to open the gap between himself and mates .. doesn’t utilize size well enough and doesn’t finish checks .. could be more intimidating, especially with his wingspan .. will improve fighting along the boards when he’s filled in .. fighting off physical pressure will improve as well, while sporting good puck protection instincts .. successful debut scoring his first, but there is still some work.

Have you ever moved jobs after being at a really good place and man is it tough. The new boss dosn’t respect you and everyone is treating you like a begginner. Man you wish you could go back to your old job but it’s not there any more…people here just don’t respect you like they should. That’s probably how Komi and Leba feel.

    @ Peeler:

When did he say he wasn’t trading versteeg? I heard him say he wasn’t shopping versteeg?

Burke is smart as fuck, don’t take his words out of context, you’ll get ripped to shreds like the doctors on that sportsnet radio show.

Lebda: It has been a long time since this guy was looked upon to be offensively creative and play a key role on the pp. I’m not sure we should give up on him there just yet. He’s not going to replace Kaberle, obviously, but give him a few games and practices to get his feet wet. He’s mobile, and he’s put up points at lower levels. There was one non-pp situation last night where he made a pretty sweet move to get the puck to the net. Don’t remember the specifics, only that the Rosehill line was on at the time, so getting the puck there was kind of irrelevant. With a few games to play around and rediscover his offensive instincts, he might surprise us, provided the rest of the D corps can be relied on to insulate him in even-strength situations.

From reading everything I have seen in here and what people are talking about on TV I do believe Burke has raised the idea of Kessel to Los Angeles. Not sure if it was serious but the messaging is to broad based for that to be untrue.

anybody read rosie dimanno’s article in the toronto star basically saying luke schenn should be wearing the C. Not that I totally disagree but it seems like she’s just trying to stir up some unnecessary controversy. For crying out loud toronto media give the boys a break, they’re working hard and trying for a playoff push. phaneuf had a serious leg injury and is just getting into form. rosie dimanno give yourself a shake and write something positive will ya man!

Not sure this would be beneficial, unless there are actual issues between Kessel and the rest of the team. To me he’s a key building block who just doesn’t have the right pieces around him to fit quite yet. If Kadri is ready next year, or Richards lands here in the summer, that could change fairly quickly.

Lots of smoke but I think Leafs are the front runner here.

Yep, Burke was methodical to a tee with the Kaberle trade. He pulled the trigger after two games we really needed him for, and before 3 games where we could win without him. We should have won last night, but the hockey gods were giving Ottawa a break, and the first glance at decent goaltending they’ve had in years.

Who will be better? Colborne or Seguin? I hope to hell it is Colborne.

Anyone think this is a fair trade:
    -
    To Nashville:
    -
    Mike Komisarek
    Carl Gunnarsson
    -
    To Toronto:
    -
    Ryan Suter
    4th in 2011
    -
Or am I way off base with this? The logic is that Komisare and Gunnarsson are under contract for a while (well, Gunnar is an RFA, but they would be able to retain him a long time), whereas Suter becomes a UFA next year, and will probably walk like Hamhuis, Timonen, and others before him. At the same time, Nashville plays the kind of game where Komisarek would really excel. David Poille was also working with Burke to establish the Olympic roster, and while I’m sure Burke made the final call, they obviously agreed that Komisare was an Olympic calibre defensemen at the time. You gotta think if there are any guys who would take a chance on Komi, Poille would be one of them.
    -
EDIT: Apparently my ‘K’ button is jammed. Ignore the spellings of KomisarE
