First impressions of Colborne

Having taken in Joe Colborne‘s debut in today’s Marlies – Griffins game, here is Kats’ first blush scouting analysis of the newest Leaf:

Big, rangy pivot, fairly swift and quick .. first two-step quickness leads into wide horseshoe stride, only a few required to hit top speed .. stride gets slushy when hurried .. net presence, if not directly in front – especially on PP today – he’s hovering in dirty areas .. entered dangerous slot area to pick up rebound and snap first as a Marlie .. seemed to handle the puck very little, passing it off and trying to get to the net – also part unfamiliarity being his first game .. gravitated toward where the puck was defensively leading to openings where a center would cover, like down low by the top of the crease .. also follows puck carrier instead of finding open space to be an option off the rush .. has to open the gap between himself and mates .. doesn’t utilize size well enough and doesn’t finish checks .. could be more intimidating, especially with his wingspan .. will improve fighting along the boards when he’s filled in .. fighting off physical pressure will improve as well, while sporting good puck protection instincts .. successful debut scoring his first, but there is still some work.

ya that would be a huge hit to the NHL if crosby is out not to mention Team Canada
lukey he is still young and even if he sits the rest of the year out he will come back I think team doctors are much smarter now then they were for lindros

    @ Cameron:

Overpayment for brown as in like a 2nd or third. D’amigo seems like he would be the ideal bottom top six forward. Strong defensive play as well as being a great offensive threat.

Yes, but I’d like him to get some time on the ice with Colby so he can add that same edge, and peskiness that makes Armstrong so unique. It’s also entirely possible that Armstrong is never moved, and signs another contract here. A year or two from now, we may not need the additional assets from that kind of move. Eventually you have to start showing some loyalty to the guys you’ve signed, and give them a chance to overcome the hurdle.

Agreed man, I hope he can put this past him, and not have anything like that happen again, but like we seen in the past concussions seem to be a recurring thing, gotta feel some bad for the guy

It wasn’t all doom and gloom last night. Hopefully, our team will adjust to the loss of Kaberle. BB has done well with the Kabs trade. Now is our chance to critically evaluate our defence. The only problem is the ever looming threat of the lottery pick. If we can stay out of that danger zone, I am all for player development and intelligent acquisition/ free agency with patience.

    @ djstml:

Not sure I would care if he was cocky…..just as long as he dosnt cross the arrogant line….

He has the attitude that we lack on our team…..he knows hes good and wants people to know it, but you can see that he has pride and knows he needs to work at it.

We all talk about players coming to TO and whether can can stand the pressure…..this kid gives me the impression not only will he stand it..he will thrive in it……

But other teams play a similar trap. Nashville, Montreal, Florida, even the Kings play a really defensive game. There are definitely teams that could use him more than we could, where a favorable arrangement could be agreed upon.

He says the right things, but I’ve always gotten the impression that he knows he’s good, and isn’t shy about it. His “If I go back” when someone mentioned the suspension awaiting him in the AHL is an example.

Well, he’s never been this bad at handling the puck, so that is definitely an area of his game that will improve with more ice time. There was a point this season where Komisarek was playing about 15 minutes per night, he had 8 points, was making great breakout passes, and was a +6. It’s funny, even then people were ragging on him, and I just couldn’t understand what people expected of him. Apparently 4.5 million dollars in free agency should get you a 19 year old Bobby Orr.

maybe i took it the wrong way but when i saw insanely cocky, it struck me. but i agree with you, he seems to be determined to excel and could you blame him? if players don’t play with the same intentions or passion than i don’t think they should be playing for the leafs at all. he seems like he’ll bleed blue and white for many years to come
