RICHARD LAUTENS/TORONTO STAR

Your weekly Marlies release followed by some clarifications on re-entry waiver status with help from Leafs assistant GM Claude Loiselle:

“Last Week:

The Marlies went 3-1-0-0 last week in their four games, all against division opponents. Including their win Monday against San Antonio, the Marlies have rattled off four wins over their past five games.

Ben Scrivens backstopped the Marlies to a pair of victories over Manitoba last Tuesday and Wednesday in Winnipeg. Ryan Hamilton netted his first career AHL hat trick in the Marlies 5-3 victory on Wednesday night.

Toronto began their eight game homestand on Friday night, but was defeated 4-3 by the Hamilton Bulldogs.

On Saturday night at Ricoh Coliseum, the Marlies beat the Griffins, 4-3 in a shootout. Joe Colborne scored a goal in his Marlies debut and Greg Scott was the game’s first star.

Colborne added two more goals on Monday afternoon in Toronto’s 6-4 win over the Rampage. Andrew Engelage won his second straight game, making 33 saves.

***

Notes:

- The Marlies have posted a record of 4-1-0-0 over their past five games. During that span they’ve out-scored their opponents 20-15.

- Toronto’s penalty killing unit has been solid through the first 59 games this season, ranking first in the AHL with an 86.5% success rate. They’ve allowed only six power play goals over their past 15 games.

- The Marlies 17 road victories currently rank first in the North Division and fourth in the AHL. Toronto has only five more road games on their 2010-11 schedule.

- Joe Colborne made his Marlies debut on Saturday night and recorded a goal and one more in the shootout. On Monday, Colborne was the game’s first star, scoring two times in the Marlies 6-4 win.

- Mike Zigomanis has registered six points (one goal, five assists) over his past four games. On Monday, Zigomanis scored the game- winning goal and added two helpers.

- Defenceman Simon Gysbers has collected 15 points (three goals, 12 assists) over his past 14 games. He ranks tied for second on the Marlies in power play points with 11.

- Nazem Kadri ranks 11th in the AHL in rookie scoring with 33 points (13 goals, 20 assists). He’s notched points in three of his past four games as he continues his point a game pace. He is six points off the team points lead with 18 less games played than leader Mike Zigomanis.

- Goaltender Andrew Engelage has posted two wins in his first two games with the Marlies this season.

- Toronto’s 177 goals so far this season ranks first in their division and are tied for fourth in the Western Conference.

- The Marlies are 9-2-0-4 against the West Division this season.

***

Upcoming Opponents:

The Marlies continue their four game week on Wednesday with a matchup against the back-to-back Calder Cup champions, Hershey Bears. It will be the second and final time the two teams meet this season. Toronto won their last meeting 3-2 on November 12. Christian Hanson scored the game-winning goal late in the third period while Jussi Rynnas made 42 saves for the win. The Bears currently rank third in the AHL with 74 points, posting a record of 35-18-1-3.

Toronto hosts the Manitoba Moose for a pair of games this weekend at Ricoh Coliseum on Saturday and Sunday. CBC will broadcast the game live at 1 p.m. on Sunday. After losing to the Moose in their first three meetings, the Marlies have posted two straight wins against the division rivals. Toronto currently trails Manitoba by one point in the
North Division standings.”

There seems to be some confusion surrounding the re-entry waiver status of certain Marlies, a subject brought about by the lineup changes over the past week. I’ve confirmed the waiver statuses of the following with Leafs assistant GM and cap and CBA expert Claude Loiselle:

D Matt Lashoff – subject to re-entry waivers because he is on a one way contract making $550,000, which is over the $105,000 threshold.  The exception to this rule are players that are considered Veteran Minor league players defined as a player who have played at least 320 professional games in North America and have not spent more than 80 NHL games on NHL roster over the prior two seasons or more than 40 NHL games on NHL roster in the immediate prior season. That determination is made at the beginning of each season and Matt had only played 297 pro games before the 2010-11 season began.

D Danny Richmond – waiver exempt. Richmond earns in excess of $105,000 (his AHL salary is $200,000) but had played more than 320 pro games before the season started, qualifying him as a veteran minor league player.

F Fabian Brunnstrom – subject to re-entry waivers as he earns $675,000 on his one way contract, above the $105,000 threshold.

D Simon Gysbers – exempt from re-entry waivers as he is on an entry level contract.

F Aaron Voros – subject to re-entry waivers as he earns $900,000 on his one way contract.

Note: The one/two-way distinction has bearing on a player’s re-entry waiver status due to the salary threshold, but not on original waiver status. That is a function of age, experience and years signed from first NHL contract. One/two-way speaks to player salary at the NHL versus AHL levels (one-way it is the same in both leagues, two-way it is different). As one-way contracts are valued at the NHL salary minimum or above, they will always be above that $105,000 threshold.

Getzlaf was not the Ryan Getzlaf you all know today. He was still av ery good player, but not a dominant guy back then. People have short memories. The most effective line for the Ducks in that run was actually Moen-Pahlsson-Niedermayer.

No, I just actually know how hockey works. You’re just blind if you really think Kessel went from being a +23 to a -23 because he just forgot how to play hockey. Christ people are dumb. Bad teams have minus players. It’s a team stat. Any NHL coach will tell you this, yet we continue to hear internet experts spout off otherwise. The stat only reveals outliers.

i’d say it has more to do with his lack of offense than poor defensive play. He’s a smart guy, but when you’re the center trusted to score goals when your team is trailing, you’re going to get scored on. I’m pretty sure about 5 of his minuses alone are empty netters. In a 3rd line role, which is where he belongs, I don’t think you’d see that stat be so out of whack. I really don’t see how this is so far out there. If Seguin were in his position, he would have been destroyed already.

I’ve played golf with Dale. He had a pro tour card for the Hooters tour.
Like all GM’s he lies conveniently..Weiss could well be in play soon.

    Carolina is getting desperate…good news

On another note plus/minus is bogus for eample while on the power play you are deep in the corner your point man has his shot blocked other team’s player races down the ice and scores you and your PP teammates get a minus, worse all PK get a + for a play that involved 2 players and a goalie!

Kessel still draws the top defenders, top checking units, and doesn’t have the support Grabovski does. Like I just said in my Bozak post, if you give him a worthy center, and put Bozak where he belongs, the stats go back to normal. Kessel wasn’t just a part of Boston’s success, he was their leading scorer – it was Savard who fell off after he departed, not Kessel. Like Burke said, it’s a personnel problem. You give Kessel a center who helps him score more, and suddenly it’s the other team trailing, and we’re not pressing for goals and watching empty netters lobbed in for worthless minuses. It doesn’t mean the player is bad, it just shows you where the problem is.
