GDT: Four point afternoon in Atlanta

Marlies Update: The Marlies couldn’t solve Moose netminder Eddie Lack, who turned away all 33 shots in a 1-0 Moose victory. Nazem Kadri mixed it up in two separate scrums late in the contest. Gotta love the fire. Gustavsson stopped 29 of 30 but did kick out a juicy rebound on the game winner. Tough loss.

It’s quite a lineup for the Blue and White enthusiast today as the Leafs and their farm team play a double header with playoff implications. At 5 p.m. the Leafs kick off their second game in under 24 hours against the eleventh placed Atlanta. With a win the Leafs pull within three of eighth placed Carolina and distance themselves by three from their opponent. With a regulation loss, they’d fall back to eleventh and remain five back of Carolina with no games in hand.

The Thrashers and Leafs are traveling on two different trajectories as of late as the Thrashers have won only one game in regulation in their last ten while the Leafs have picked up at least a point in nine of their last ten. The need to play a neat road game is crucial for the Leafs coming off a wild 65-minute game last night against Pittsburgh. Anything resembling last night’s defensive breakdowns will be a recipe for disaster for a Leafs team that won’t be at a 100% physically.

It will be interesting to see how Reimer responds to last night’s rocky performance. It could be a blessing to get right back at it and put yesterday behind him but it will also put his conditioning to the test. There’s no way Reimer will be 100% physically so the team in front of him will have to do a much better job limiting shots to the perimeter and clearing the case. The Pens were too easily allowed to operate under the hashmarks and if we see a similar effort from the Leafs D you’d have to fear for even the seemingly unflappable Reimer. This probably isn’t the preferable scenario to have Optimus play both weekend games but it seems Giguere isn’t yet ready to return.

Chris Mason will get the start for the Thrashers. He’s 7-8-3 with a 3.64GAA and .890 SV%.

It’s a game that will test the Leafs’ endeavour, for sure. If they can put in a gutsy effort and pull two points out of Atlanta, they would go a long way in making a believer out of me as far as these post-season hopes go.

Good news for Leafs in goal is Gustavsson seems to have figured things out in the AHL. Giguere may hardly play rest of way.

Diff in way #Leafs play in front of goalies reveals just how fragile their confidence is; showcases need for veteran to play key role/mins.

    @ Gucci Little Piggy:

Scouting services dont even rate him as high as Gardiner….lower than Aulie and Blacker.

The kid is tiny and just want stand up to NHL players.

Maybe I am wrong, but I wouldnt give up any assets to bring him in. Especially not Mac.

Talk now is that Stars will keep Brad Richards instead of trading him. Or at least won’t trade him within West. Narrows Kings’ options

    @ moimoi28:
He had his eyes on the puck, which he was swatting at. Either way, how could he have avoided it with Reimer moving forward into him?

gunnerson fucked up on that stapleton goal, no one even mentioned that, that was the key reason for the goal, there was one mad behind the net when schenn was going back there, and gunnar just left the front of the net and went behind to chase schenn’s man from some unknown reason, if he stayed infront and let schenn pressure is man up the boards that wouldnt ahve happened, but jiggy was brutal too, i thnk his career must be over

OK now we have to bury that other AHL team the Pens on Wed. I gave up on the playoffs awhile ago so this is all exciting and a big bonus to be this close at this point. I won’t be devistated if we don’t make it but I definately do not want Burke to burn our draft picks and prospects tomorrow unless it is a deal that helps us long term. For us to have no 1st rounders or second last year to now have 2 firsts and a second this year along with tons of cap space should allow Burke lots of flexibility in the offseason and for that I am really excited.

The fragile confidence of this team is a reflection of just how young they really are. Hindsight being 20/20 I do wonder how they would have reacted to Scrivens instead of Giggy. If JSG is not 100% the team would have known that, just a thought. I also wonder if Mac, Kuli and Grabo are at least subconsciously worried about Mac being shipped off.

Please Andrew, give it a rest. Schenn has achieved dick all compared to Kadri. They’ve both achieved dick all in the NHL. Schenn’s success at the WJC is a joke of a measuring stick. Hodgson also dominated that tournament. Schenn also did it a year later in his career – Kadri had already moved past that stage by the time Schenn was dominating shitty teams in the WJC. All of your points to boost up Schenn are total garbage and completely irrelevant when comparing the two players. Also, I’ve told you several times that Burke did not try to trade up to draft Schenn. He said several times that he was only interested in acquiring the pick outright, and the only moving up he was willing to do was to land Tavares. Despite this, you continue to insist that you somehow have inside information, and know that Burke was desperately trying to trade up. At what point do we just take Burke at his word on matters like this? Looked to me like he had his heart set on Kadri + Schenn, or Tavares by himself, not just Schenn.
    -
Also, moimoi was only saying that trading Kadri ++ for Schenn was insane – which it is. If we evaluate the players based on actual play and ability, instead of garbage draft selection and meaningless tournaments, we find they are actually rather equal. Straight up it’s a pretty even trade, so why would we add to it just to appease this retarded fan base? Schenn will be available much cheaper when reality sets in that he is not Steve Yzerman reborn, lol. But God, how hypocritical can you be, hyping the shit out of a prospect in someone elses system, while at the same time completely running over our prospects, and implying they are only good because of Blue and White goggle syndrome. Man oh man,,,,
