GDT: It’s Been One Week

"Maple Leafs...transform and roll out!"

Your Toronto Maple Leafs are in action tonight against the no-pronged attack of the Philadelphia Flyers.  Despite the absence of Pronger, the Leafs will be in tough against the deepest and possibly most balanced defense in the league.  Optimus Reim will make his 12th consecutive start for the buds who are hoping to break out of a 2 game skid while the Flyers will counter with Brian Boucher.  The game can be seen on Leafs TV at 7pm tonight.

The last time the Leafs and the Flyers met was a week ago exactly.  The Leafs came into the Wells Fargo Centre and came away with a 3 – 2 win on the strength of Darryl Boyce’s 3rd period ‘Praise Jesus’ goal.  It was the first time in three meetings this season that the Leafs won and the first time in 3 years that the buds bested the Flyers in their own arena.

Fans expecting a repeat of March 3rd’s madness might be in for a treat.  Despite handling the Edmonton Oilers Tuesday night, the Flyers have lost 4 of their last 5 and are 4 – 5 – 1 in their last ten.  The Leafs have lost 5 of their past ten, but have done so in the best way possible, collecting 14 of a possible 20 points (5 – 1 – 4) as they battle to stay relevant in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Tale of the Tape

Record (W-L-OTL):

Leafs: 29 – 28 – 10 (10th in the East)
Flyers: 41 – 19 – 6 (1st in the East)

Goals for:

Leafs: 176 (24th overall)
Flyers: 212 (4th overall)

Goals against:

Leafs: 206 (25th overall)
Flyers: 175 (11th overall)

PP%

Leafs:  15.7% (25th overall)
Flyers: 16.4% (22nd overall)

PK%

Leafs: 78.7% (26th overall)
Flyers: 83.7% (9th overall)

Game Notes:

- Street performer/head coach Ron Wilson is again juggling the Leafs top six with the hope of finding some new looks in the attacking zone.  Mac and the USSR will now be Mac and the Prairie Boys (dibs on that band name) as Clarke will skate on the second line with Tyler Bozak and Joffrey Lupul.  The first line will consist of 25+ goal scorers Mikhail Grabovski, Nikolai Kulemin and the (groan) slumping Phil Kessel.

- Further in this vein, I for one hope that this move wakes up the Leafs gunners.  With 15 games remaining and a lot of ground to gain, the Leafs top six need to score close to 3 goals a game.  If it’s unrealistic to expect that sort of production from the Leafs top six, then it’s unrealistic to expect the Leafs to get into the 8th seed.

- I owe an apology to Keith Aulie.  After Francois Beauchemin was traded, I commented that it would be unreasonable to expect to see Aulie get ice-time north 18 minutes per game.  In the 13 games that have followed, the native of Rouleau, Saskatchewan has averaged no less than 19 minutes per game.

- On the commute home from work, I realized that Brett Lebda’s last name is an anagram for ‘abled.’ As in, ‘When I watch Brett Lebda’s play in the defensive zone I begin to wonder if he’s mentally disabled.” Remember, its not slander if it’s in print and it’s not libel if I am just idly wondering.

Dramatic Plotline of the Day

- In last week’s match-up, ex-leaf and NWA member Kris Versteeg scored two goals and was causing havoc most of the night.  His 2 goals against his old club represent 50% of his total since being traded to Philadelphia.  While 4 goals in 11 games is usually nothing to sneeze at, Versteeg’s contributions have – to date – done little to provide quality results for Philadelphia.  He might become expendable in the offseason if he cannot provide the Flyers with the clutch, key offense that has always been attributed to him.

Final Thoughts and Questions:

- Since the allstar break, the Maple Leafs have set the world on fire with their play.  If they fall short of making the playoffs, they’ll only have themselves (and possibly Chris Higgins and Peter Regin to blame).  With that in mind, I’ll leave you with a few pressing questions

  1. Will the new line combos breath life into the club and propel them into the playoffs? Or is this just re-arranging the deck chairs on the titanic?
  2. With the positive early returns, do you feel that Brian Burke has done enough to make this team a playoff contender for next season?
  3. Is tonight the night that Mike Komisarek is finally relied upon to play big, tough minutes? Nope.
  4. Think Flyers GM Paul Holmgren might want a do-over on the Versteeg trade?

If the standings stayed the same, but we squeaked into 8th would we play Philli in the first round? I’m not saying it would happen, but looking back on the last few times Leafs have played some of the top teams in the East – I just think we match well with The Flyers. Believe me, I’m not saying its gonna happen – but if it did, I don’t know if I buy the ‘getting blown out in the first round’ line – I really don’t. I actually think (again, not gonna happen) but a Leafs/Flyers first round would actually be my first choice (compared to a few other options)…

    That’s all…

And just to add about Wilson. I didn’t like the comments after the game about the Komi penalty. Sure it was a stupid play but did Wilson have to be a sanctimonious asshole and agree with the call the way he did. I didn’t see St Jullian in Boston in total agreement with the refs call on the Chara hit. He stuck up for his player regardless how bad a hit it was. Again this guy does not support his players and has a holier than thou attitude as if he’s a cut above anyone else.

Leo Komorov seems to be playing well in the KHL playoff 6 games 4 goals 2 assists. Regular season he did well also.

All he had to do was brush it off instead he backed the refs and threw his player under the bus in public which he always does. No small wonder he’s the most hated coach in the NHL.

Look you can back him all you want. That’s your opinion and I respect that. You will never get me to agree with you that Wilson even comes close to being an effective coach. No sense debating any further and we can agree to disagree.

Burke still has lots of work to do in the off season for sure. Does anyone really believe that Crabb,Boyce,Lebda, Shoey, and Komi are the future of this team. I think not. I expect major changes to this roster next season. Hopefully the first of which will be getting rid of Wilson.

I’m not sure there will be major changes, but hopefully there are a handfull like you’ve listed.
Boyce could have a place on this team going forward but your point is well taken. I like him as a reliable home grown 4th liner.
Upgrades to Crabb and Sjostrom will help this team a lot, even if we can’t find an established top pivot, it will still allow us to go with a kid like Kadri as a top 6 centre as soon as next year as I see it.
Perhaps a couple of D step up next year amongst the Lashoff, Gysbers, Gardiner and Mikus group (i.e.) and Lebda is again the 7th defenseman (or gone with Komi). Having the young group make the same mistakes warrants more optimism.
    Aulie/Gunner-Phaneuf
    Aulie/Gunner/Lashoff-Schenn
    Gunner/Lashoff-Gardiner/Gysbers
Also, let’s face it. We might be best off if Reimer is our backup next year and challenging an established guy like Bryzgalov for 50-50 playing time. Unless Reimer and the Monster can convince me otherwise, the goalie depth we have is still in the “prospect” phase.

The abysmal power play is what is really killing this team right now. No imagination, no flow, 5 guys pulling apart instead of pulling together. Sure, they are light on talent and the guys who are paid to put the puck in the net are once again slumping, however the design of the strategy falls entirely on the coaching staff IMO. Regarding Wilson outing his players in public, here’s a good article from the Star on the very subject. Personally, I just fail to see the upside in doing this. http://www.thestar.com/sports/hockey/nhl/mapleleafs/article/951483–message-to-ron-wilson-don-t-publicly-shame-your-players

no need to go any further … i’d prefer to see us decline like they do in football, just so the other team can’t gain momentum from our failure … Slapshot quote: “it’s fuckin’ embarrassing”

    @ dlb:
Agreed. The goalie situation is complex. Do we go with the youngsters like Reimer and Scrivens or relegate them to back up some one like Bryz. If we decide to go after Bryz then for sure some of our propects will be moving on. We can’t hang on to them forever. It a tough decision for Burke and company for sure .

    @ Burtonboy:
I don’t have a problem with Crabb, Boyce and Shoey, although they are all quite similar. None should be in more than 3rd line roles. I think Shoey won’t be offered a contract by the Leafs, although I believe he could be a very effective 4th liners.

As for Komisarek and Ledba. Komisarek has no real offensive game whatsoever…. handles the puck like a hand-grenade and passes it like he’s trying to shoot. Ledba can’t kill penalities effectively and despite being quick really doesn’t contribute anything offensively other than the occassional ill-timed rush or pinch -which usually results in an odd-man rush going the other direction.

That’s funny that he is being talked about now. About 2 weeks ago I was board and saw the leafs owned his rights so I looked him up. And posted,” so how about that Leo Komorov” at like 1 am when everyone was in bed and no one responded lol
