Frattin Wins WCHA Player of the Year

Matt Frattin‘s 2010-2011 collegiate season has been nothing short of spectacular and the nation’s leading goal scorer was officially recognized for it with WCHA Player of the Year honours. The Fighting Sioux senior has destroyed the stat sheet to the tune of 29 goals and 49 points in 37 games played, earning him the conference’s scoring title while amassing the most points by any North Dakota forward in 10 years. That’s actually one more goal than Matt scored in his entire first 3 NCAA seasons combined. Only 19 months ago, Frattin’s hockey career appeared to be in serious jeopardy when he was arrested for the second time by North Dakota police for a DUI, resulting in his dismissal from the school’s hockey programme. After being reinstated, he rebounded impressively to finish last season with 19 points in 24 games played, prompting myself to identify Matt as a big-time breakout candidate for 2011:

“Matt is a multi-talented player who can give you goal scoring ability while chipping in some physical play as well. He’s flying way under the radar right now, but don’t be surprised if he’s one of the names generating a ton of prospect buzz next season.”

Frattin could find himself with even more hardware at season’s end as he is amongst the favourites to win the Hobey Baker Award for the nation’s Most Outstanding Player. But for now, he will focus his attention on leading No. 1 ranked North Dakota to an NCAA title, starting with the WCHA playoffs against No. 12 seed Michigan State.

However, things could get interesting at season’s end. As a full four year commit, Frattin will find himself in the same situation as former Chicago prospect Bill Sweatt last summer. Although Frattin is still “technically” a Maple Leaf prospect, he will hold a ton of leverage in negotiations as he can simply choose to wait past the August deadline and become an unrestricted free agent. In addition to increased financial demands, Matt could also request a guaranteed NHL roster spot in the fall and the Sweatt negotiations showed that Burke is not fond of agents or players employing hardball tactics. Whatever the end result, Frattin’s journey to the NHL promises to be an intriguing storyline to follow.

    @ mitchsteel09:
Ok now I remember, Burke did say something about that. Hard to say what he will do then. He can decide to go pro right now and return to school after he finishes with Hockey I guess. Either way it seem these college draft picks are a bit of a crap shoot given they can refuse to sign and then go UFA in August.

    @ Potsy:

While his he has unrestricted status, he is still coming in on an ELC. Just like gustavvson. Where Frattin holds the cards is in his right to hold out for various clauses ( Say an NHL roster spot) or to demand higher bonuses (approaching that 2.857 million).

Bonuses change but his salary will be the exact same. Burke can offer the 900,000 plus the 2.875 in bonuses just like the bozak contract or John tavares for example.

But does a GM have the ability to make those bonuses easier or Harder to achieve. Can I not go to the player, You now dont worry about scoring 4o goals to get a decent bonus from them man come to me I will give you a 500k bonus for playing 20 games another 1 mil for 10 goals. Is it set in stone what those bonuses have to be ?
The point really is they should be at least an RFA,or something. Encouraged to stay in school. and still benifit the NHL team. Look at Jake Gardiner, You will not convince me that there is not extra pressure now to sign a contract and try out to make the bigs next year. They entice him with the money as they dont want to Risk losing him to FA. We encouraging A kid to drop out, it just seams weird coming from so called professionals would implemented this.

    @ Mind Bomb:

I agree with you, but thats not the point. You were arguing that as a UFA he is able to make more money, which in fact is not true.

And i disagree with Gardiner, as Burke has stated publicly that he will not ask him to leave school.

Players show much more loyalty to teams nowadays, look at all the RFA’s that are looked up long term?? And taking huge pay cuts.

Sidney Crosby only makes 8.7 million??

    @ Mind Bomb:

Yea Sweatt was unfortunate, and playing well in the AHL, but still a long way from being anything worth worrying about. And why discredit anything burke says? He has always done what he say’s he will?

I can understand that he could have a publicist, but it doesn’t seem likely, almost all of burke’s interviews are identical, the guy knows what he wants.

    @ Nights:

My point was that Crosby could have hit Unrestricted free agency and made much more money. He choose to stay with the pens and fit under the cap at that time. Just talking about the loyalty of players nowadays. The cap is irrelevant as players are willing to work within it.

He’s an RFA until a) He hits age 27 (fairly sure it’s that, if not it’s 25) or b) plays 7 seasons in the NHL. He was an RFA when he extended that deal.
    .
I do get the loyalty thing, though. I’m just… touchy when it comes to “facts” being shown and them being faulty, when they are asserted as beign “hard facts”.

    @ Nights:

I know he was an RFA at the time but he could have signed a deal similar to kessel’s in which the duration is just long enough to award you Unrestricted status.
