With the Leafs looking to stay within distance of the eighth and final playoff spot, tonight sees the team hosting the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Bolts have given the Leafs all kinds of headaches this year, as they look to close out the season series with a 4-0 sweep.

While the Lightning’s slight struggles recently make this is a very winnable game for the home-side, it’s also a crucial must win regardless – the ground made up by the Leafs on Saturday night was quickly taken away in the form of a Sabres win yesterday.

Right now the Leafs sit six points behind both Buffalo and New York, while holding a game in hand on the Rangers.

Toronto simply cannot allow the Rangers or Sabres an opportunity to put eight points between them and the postseason at this point.

James Reimer will see his twelfth straight start for the Leafs, and will face a Leaf-killer in Dwayne Roloson for the Lightning. Roloson, along with the Sabres’ Ryan Miller have always given the Leafs a ton of trouble over the past few seasons. However, if there’s one thing we can take from the past couple months, it’s that this young Toronto team is capable of taking down games that we’d normally write-off as “just another loss.”

From Jonas Siegel at the Eat.Sleep.Leafs Blog, here is the Leafs lineup for tonight:

MacArthurGrabovskiKulemin

LupulBozakKessel

Armstrong – Boyce – Crabb

Sjostrom/Rosehill – Brent* – Brown

Aulie – Phaneuf

Gunnarsson – Schenn

Lebda – Komisarek

* Brent will wear a visor, but looks to be ready to go tonight despite sustaining an injury in Saturday night’s win against the Sabres

Wilson will have to make a decision on Sjostrom, as he’s ready to return. He will take Rosehill’s spot if inserted back into the lineup.

Quick Notes:

Nik Kulemin has potted two goals over the previous three meetings with the Lightning

St. Louis, Gagne and Stamkos have notched three points apiece against the Leafs this season (Gagne has scored the game-winner twice)

The Lightning have shut out the Leafs twice in three meetings (2-0, 4-0)

Dwayne Roloson has a 0.49 GAA and .982 SvP against Toronto this season

The puck drops at 7pm EST at the ACC. Sportsnet Ontario will carry the broadcast.

Email [email protected] and follow on twitter for some in-game discussion. Enjoy the game, folks.

Maybe “the system” is trying to ice as many AHLers as possible in one year.

I agree with Crimson that RW will probably be back to start the year next year. I hope not but wouldn’t be surprised. BB loyalty to some people will be his downfall IMO.

    @ lonsmos2:
The talent level for the most part has not been good. It’s as simple as that. Add in lots of youth still learning the NHL game. IT takes time. It doesn’t happen over night.

So now Reimer sucks eh . Typical

No I am not saying that. He has been very very good for us. Today wasn’t his best performance though. However, if you read the post carefully, we have not had good goal tending for the better part of the season excluding Reimer’s play. Our defence has struggled all year to get the puck out of the zone.

Okay then so if he had those same coaches but had the Leafs D-core of course including Lebda they would have done just as well?

Good effort tonight but our goaltending let us down, everytime we’ld push they’ld counter with a bad goal against us,oh well one more chance, the game against Carolina decides it.

The end is near, but its been fun . Wilson needs to get of his high horse and give Gus a start. Giggys days as reliable goalie are done, say thanks and move on. Burke needs to find a player or two to drive the net consistently. We very seldomly score dirty goals as Tampa did tonite.

Still havent given up hope after all these years

I think they would have a better PP PK and yes D zone coverage than what we show right now.

    @ lonsmos2:
I don’t. So how do you figure with the same coaching staff that he had in San Jose as with the Leafs that the PK and PP was at the top. Explain that one to me then? Why was it working for another team but not this one?

Playing Lebad and Komi together —— says something about RW in my book. Inability to clear the puck when there are how may days off to practise this stuff — yep coaching.

Our players have the skill, they’ve shown it. Some have shown the leadership, some have picked up the slack. I am not going to get down on this group, but I will on the coaching staff.

I pray Lashoff clears waivers. I pray the Leaf players finish the season with their heads held high. I pray that Burkie and Nonis have their eyes wide open and the minds full throttle on system change.

@BurtonBoy – Can’t thank you enough for yesterday.

    @ Waiting4LSC:
I’d rather keep my top 4 playing together with more min. than mix in the bottom 6. Most teams do that. Your praying is great and all but I do not see the current group of players making it to the championship. I see 3 other dman/ about 5 different forwards and 1 or 2 different goalies that what you see right now to ice a better team.

Wow! Good thing I went to get food after my stream went down. Making it harder on themselves to make the playoff’s that’s for sure. But i really don’t consider this the straw that broke the camel’s back, but it’s a tough one as Atlanta and Jersey could pass them. Losing to Carolina would be the last straw for this team so that cannot happen. Wilson should have had Giggy starting the 3rd(actually it should have been Gus). It was obvious Reimer was off. This guy continues not to know when to pull goalies, it goes back to Anahiem.

They’re a young team and sometimes it can be painful to watch. Unfortunately, its a couple of our “veteran players” who have really been bad this year; the main one being Komi. What can you say? He has been a failure of epic proportion and it has cost us on too many occasions.

@Cameron: What’s your take on all of this. I see an up and down team. I see talent some nights and flat players another. I see poor PK and PP, an almost complete failure to understand how to clear the zone. I feel there is a major breakdown between players and coaches on a lot of levels, yet individually there is a ton of skill on this squad.
