Reports indicate the Leafs have signed prospect Jake Gardiner to a 3-year Entry Level Contract.

After last night’s loss to Tampa Bay, you could probably use some good news this morning.

A report out of Minnesota has noted the Leafs have signed prospect Jake Gardiner — the key acquisition in the Francois Beauchemin trade — to an entry-level contract, following the University of Wisonson’s elimination from the WCHA playoffs earlier this weekend.

While contract details are not yet available, The Toronto Star’s Damian Cox speculated on Twitter this morning that the ELC is most likely set to kick in for the start of the 2011-12 season, meaning Gardiner would have to sign an Amateur Tryout (ATO) contract in order to play out the rest of this season with the Marlies.

There is seemingly little sense in burning a year of Gardiner’s ELC eligibility — and more importantly, waiver exemption — for the sake of getting him into a handful of AHL games this season. An ATO would serve as a nifty workaround, allowing him to play for the Marlies while at the same time preserving the extra year of his ELC (which would presumably run from 2011-12 through 2013-14).

As noted by PPP, the timing of Matt Lashoff’s call-up would suggest that is exactly the team’s intent: the call-up, coupled with the signing, provides each team with seven defenders on its roster.

Contract details to be posted when available.

Update:

It appears as though Colby Armstrong will miss the balance of the season with a broken foot, sustained while blocking a shot in last night’s loss. To fill his roster spot, top prospect Nazem Kadri is expected to be officially recalled to the Maple Leafs this afternoon.

In 44 games this season with the Marlies, Kadri has recorded 17 goals, 24 assists, and 62 penalty minutes.

They were great, I remember one election where they pledged to pay off the national debt with a Visa card to get the Air Miles.

    LOL!, that is classic!

OK i go out to golftown for a few hours and I come back to see my boy Nazem is going to be a Leafer again. Interesting.

The only way he is GOOD ENOUGH to enter the team is through injury. I mean there is no way he could replace Sjostrom, Crabb, Boyce, or Brent right? Just Armstrong.

What a joke, but I will take it.

    @ lonsmos2:

Well I am sure they must know better…..Clearly a 28-30th ranked PP is what a team strives for.

seems to be true since we are at that spot every year of RW being here. Again what to hell do we lowly fans know. RW’s PK and PP systems have worked for him in the past so they just have to work here right.

    @ lonsmos2:

Yeah there is no way in god’s green earth that a PP or PK plan (system) that worked 6 years ago in San Jose couldve been figured out and picked apart by teams in the NHL. No chance !!

In fact, I would say most teams just would roll over and allow us to do whatever we want when it comes to the PP. FUCK!

Speaking of Brian Glennie, remember when Dan Maloney and him fought and Maloney bounced Glennie’s head of the ice about a dozen times.. ouch!

    @ Bob is your uncle:

Its not the players is the antiquated system. I will stick by that, well the fact that Tim Fuckin’ Brent is on our PP is PART of the reason.

Burke has also announced that Gardiner has signed and ELC and will report to the Marlies. No mention at all of a tryout deal.

Worth remember when it comes to the Leafs: How much earlier would they have been “out” of the race if not for Reimer’s play?

next year we could definitly run

    Lupul – Kadri – Kessel
    Kulemin – Grabovski – MacArthur
    Upshall – Bozak – Armstrong
    Brown – Brent – Hanson

    Aulie – Phaneuf
    Gunnerson – Schenn
    Komisarek – Lashoff

    Reimer – Gustvasson

    or Bryzgalov – (R or G)

either way, if we kept that lineup intact for the season, we’ll be a much better team moving forward, and SHOULD make the playoffs. hopefully we can make those minor off season moves and grab upshall for the 3rd line. Loops gets a whole season of training in and we’ll be alot more balance with everyone expecting their roles.
