Game In 10 – Game 72

Welcome to the St. Patrick’s Day edition of the Game In 10. Four Leaf clovers may be lucky, but nothing is accomplished without effort. Continue for a Leafs game that’s more vanilla than Ice Ice Baby.

1 – The Leafs are 31-31-10 and this was not a good game, the team was flat as a pancake, flavorless and without jam.

2 – Clarke MacArthur sporting the A in Komisarek’s absence, but I doubt he’ll want to remember this game, like eating cake in a horror dream.

3 – Brown and Duco put up their dukes in the battle of two Mikes in an energetic fight, something you might expect from middleweights, not a lot of punches landed as Duco gets the takedown but Brown wins the punch count. Keith Aulie is just a monster out there, ragdolling Ryan Carter after his huge hit on Grabovski. I love the timing of this kid’s fights, it’s emotional, it’s momentum shifting, it’s everything fighting in the NHL should be.

4 – Surprisingly, Florida responded with a good level of pugnacity and truculence of their own, which made this game bearable to watch. On the bright white blue side, Luke Schenn played well, which means he plowed his way through Panther bodies like farmer Bob’s tractor. He really seems to feed of those big hits and his game noticeably improves whenever he throws one, much like the case with Ovechkin and scoring.

5 – You know your PK is bad if you let in 2 PP goals to a team that’s 29th in the league in PP%. Surprisingly, Florida’s PK% is sixth in the league, but even that doesn’t justify the poor excuse for the PP units we’ve been icing throughout the season. I’ve constantly suggested that if we miss the playoffs, lack of production on our PP will be the biggest nail in the coffin.

6 – Lack of a legitimate puck moving defenseman means more defensive turnovers, in other news, logical things are logical.

7 – So, JS Giguere was our starting goalie tonight and while I’m not suggesting Reimer should have started (he can’t start every game) it’s pretty obvious that the team is playing a more confident game in front of Optimus. The first Florida goal could be blamed on Giggy if that’s what you’re looking for, but he was screened on the second goal and a victim to lack of defensive support on the third tally. Oh, that’s that confidence level right?

8 – The speed of Florida’s forwards created problems for our big static defense. I’m not happy to say Ron Wilson was out coached in this one. Also, I stopped counting how many times our team got shut out this season in fear of a league record

9 – The one positive thing about this game were the fans, who were louder than the empty seats in the building yes, but were a tribute to Leafs Nation with their chants and support for the team. Phaneuf kneeing is just an unfortunate play, but I found it funny how no Florida player went after our captain after that play. Yes, I know he’s scary.

10 – Is there anything anyone can say to make you feel better after this one? No? Well I suspected as much so I’ll just wish you a happy St. Patrick’s day, rebuild is the mantra. Good night.

    @ Joha:
I understand what you are saying about other considerations, and they have merit. I just think when the team has the opportunity to get to 2 points back, management owes it to all the players to give them the best chance to do it. My point is that should be the priority consideration now, not paying respect to anybody. If it was their considered opinion that Giggy gave them the best shot, fine, so be it. Now there will be plenty of games when they can show their respect to whoever they want.

my god this is frusterating i mean ALMOST NO GOALIES in the league play on back to back nights why in the hell should our rookie goaltender whos got 16 nhl games under his belt do it? buffalo starts enroth all the time to give miller a break in back to back games and we all know every game is important for buffalo.
    .
Its really crazy guys i mean of all the stupid things wilsons done like bitch about kadri after every game or the fact that our powerplay and penalty kill are an embarrasment to hockey and yet your blaming wilson for playing the veteran stanley cup winning goaltender as a back up on a back to back game unfucking believable.

you’re right.. absolutely.. but, to be fair, the Leafs played ok until those 2 softies went in – not great, but, certainly as well as Florida.. the thing with Reimer is, how many games have the Leafs won without playing their best game when he was in net? I dont think that game was 3-0 going into the 3rd with Reimer in net.. they could have been down 1-0 or tied 1-1.. or heck, they could have been down 6-0 – who knows.. game changed completely on those 2 goals though and the reason Leafs are in the hunt now is because they won games with reimer when they werent playing their best which they were not winning all year long

    TheGoalieGuild

    2. Jonas Gustavsson did NOT take a step back in his development. He actually looked much improved in Oct & Nov. He just didn’t get results.
    TheGoalieGuild

When it comes to development, it’s not always about winning. It’s about adjusting and making mini-improvements over time…which he’s done.
    TheGoalieGuild

Some goalies take longer than others to adjust, especially with Allaire. Leafs probably should’ve started him off with the Marlies instead.
    TheGoalieGuild

Very rarely does a goalie go from the Swedish Elite League to the NHL & have instant success. That transition is a crazy, difficult process.
    TheGoalieGuild

So while I do think Gustavsson isn’t been the best fit for the Allaire style, Jonas WANTS to work with him! Give it another year, Burke!

    @ Andrew R:
I also fail to see the structure in the goalie situation. If Leafs are gunning for the play-offs ride Reimer until he breaks. If next year is more important, play The Monster for some games to check if he is back.

To me it is a lot of “flip a coin” decisions and there is no red line what so ever. But maybe I just fail to see the big picture

    @ Rick Lanz:

I agree about what the point of professional sports is, but thinking short-sightedly about _only_ those things will probably undermine your attempt at achieving them. I never said that the playoff push would be detrimental to Reimer’s development. The point I was making was that riding him too hard (and having him play back to backs after 13 or w/e straight starts is riding him too hard) would not be a good idea because there is the increased chance that he injures himself, which would set back his development defintely. I agree we should be playing Reimer down the stretch, but should we really be having him play back to backs and risk him losing development time in the AHL playoffs or getting right into a good summer regimen? Even the best goalies in the league don’t play back to backs. He’s still young and there’s still lots of time for development.

If our primary consideration was really making the playoffs to make some more $, then Burke would have traded for Arnott or some other veteran(s) at the deadline. Obviously he didn’t do that so there must be other considerations in play. It doesn’t make sense to go all out for one playoff push. I know I sound like I’m drinking the Burke Kool-Aid, but it makes sense to take it slow and not take unnecessary risks.

Well for me it’s time to move on from this issue. Some great posts here this morning and well debated by everyone regardless of your position. It’s what makes MLHS such a great site and I’m impressed we were all able to debate these issues without getting into a pissing match. Good stuff guys

    @ MacInMoscow:

Sorry if I made it seem like “respect” was the primary consideration. I didn’t mean to give that impression; in a previous post (page 3 maybe) I was trying to say that there were a variety of considerations in play in not playing Reimer. Playing Giguere was a matter of “respecting the veteran”. I don’t buy the contention that the players just gave up or lost faith in the coach because of his decision to play Giguere. If that actually is the case, then man we have a problem. Good teams should be able to play well in spite of bad goaltending, not because they have good goaltending. But maybe this isn’t the case with the leafs because they are so young and inexperienced. Anyways, I guess that’s a question which will be answered in the future.
