Fresh off a well-earned, win-or-bust victory in Carolina last night, the Maple Leafs face yet another must-win scenario this evening as they pay a visit to the lowly Florida Panthers.

In what will be a bit of a blast from the past, Jean-Sebastien Giguere will get his first start in the Toronto goal since February 12th, while James Reimer, having started 13 games in a row and 25 of 35 since January 1st, receives a much-deserved night off.

.

Storyline: Battle of the Backups

At first glance, it might seem a bit odd that Giguere would get the call over the forgotten man, Jonas Gustavsson, who has been quietly biding his time in the press box. Indeed, it would seem that facing a struggling offense, away from the pressure of playing in front of the home crowd, would be the perfect situation in which to give Gustavsson a chance to reclaim his confidence — and that of the coaching staff. After all, if he is to be in the plans for next season, at some point the team will need to figure out where his game is at.

(For more on Gustavsson and the three-headed goalie monster — pun fully intended — see Conor’s article from earlier today.)

Upon closer inspection, however, there is sound logic behind the decision to give Giguere the nod. For one, the team is in the thick of a playoff race and Giguere has been through it before. Secondly — and more importantly — in two starts against the Panthers earlier this season, Giguere has posted a 2-0-0 record with a 1.92 GAA and .927 Sv%.

The Panthers will counter with Scott Clemmenson, which in itself is a somewhat interesting move considering he has gone 0-1-1 against the Leafs this season with a 2.90 GAA and .885 Sv%, while Tomas Vokoun has gone 1-0-0 with a 1.00 GAA and .970 Sv%. However, with Vokoun set to depart as a free agent at season’s end, it would appear the Panthers are trying to get Clemmenson (who has 1 year remaining on his deal) into a few extra games in order to gauge what they have in him for next season.

.

Keys to the Game

Passing: Although the Panthers do not boast a strong attack, averaging fewer goals-per-game and (amazingly) a less-effective PP than that of the Leafs, they do possess good speed among their forward ranks. The Leafs would do well to avoid the lazy, turnover-waiting-to-happen passing plays which nearly did them in on numerous occasions against Carolina last night.

Point Shots: Oft-criticized for not shooting from the point enough, it is no coincidence that the Leafs found success against against Carolina via a willingness from the defenders — namely, Phaneuf — to let fly from the blueline. With the Panthers ranked 23rd in blocked shots, and 25th in shots allowed, taking advantage of the shooting lanes must be a key component of the Leafs’ game plan tonight.

Pugnacity: Florida ranks 16th in hits (Toronto – 7th) and are tied for the fewest PIM per game (Toronto – 16th). In other words, there is an opportunity for the Leafs to wear the Panthers’ top players down by employing a rough-and-tumble approach from the outset.

he does but i just hope wilson give him the opportunity he gave schenn last year. Schenn was absolutly horendus at the beginning of last year and wilson stuck with him and look where he is now i can only hope wilson takes the same approach with Kadri. Ive have no problem with Kadri on the third line or whatever as long as he plays and wilson doesnt bench him when he loses a faceoff or not get the puck deep enough.

The difference between the development of Kadri and the development of tavares, duchene, etc. is that those other players were allowed to make mistakes and didnt have to worry about being benched or sent to the minors the next day. If the Leafs would just let Kadri play he would figure it out and get better every day.

agreed the kid is thinking wayyyy too much as he obviously is worried about making mistakes. If we could ever get a new coach next year I’ll bet he excels

Exactly i mean yes kadris going to fuck up but i mean were not talking abotu an ECHLer here hes not gunna be liability hell make mistakes but i guerentee you with more playing time hell slowly progress. I said above why in the hell are we not giving kadri the luke schenn treatment? i mean schenn was WORSE than an echler at the beginning of the year last year he was terrible everytime he stepped on the ice he was a liablity but wilson stayed with him and let him work it out so why in the hell is kadri being treated differently?

I’d play him with Crabb and Boyce 3 Marlie guys, maybe kadri would feel more comforatble and those other two guys could ride shotgun a bit for him…

maybe they were playing that awwwwful “go leafs go” camp-fire song in the dressing room :P

I dont get why they try and push this song sooo much before leafs play….its a godamn hockey game not a Unity camp…play something that will get us excited for the game not something that makes us want to reflect about Canada’s diversity

prediction: until that song is changed, we will not make playoffs

…yep going out on a limb

One guy who isn’t helping his own cause is MacArthur, 5 G and 8 A in his last 23 games, certainly slowed down a lot

    @ The Captain:
Completely agree…I love the flyers goal song
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kj67oYjQjRU

tell me that wouldnt get the crowd going!

I remember signing along to it when they scored against the habs in the playoffs last year. I wish toronto had a rowdy chant like that instead we have techno song that really doesnt allow the fans to be obnoxious to visiting teams

When Burke came in and wanted to make the team stronger and more physical, im sure he didnt have an acoustic guitar song playing in the back of his head, or a techno song during goals lol

anyway thats my rant lol – flyers have the right idea…loud music rallying the fans when they score and pissing off the opposition. We’d rather be friendly in toronto – pff

Not that it was all his fault the whole team was awful but why is Giguere even dressing let alone playing when he won`t be on the team next season.

The team’s best players weren’t tonight. But seriously, Giguere is a fossil. Brutal.

He has all the mobility of a 37 year old Larry Murphy on the Maple Leaf blue-line.

He should be seen no more.

    My thoughts on tonights game:

Bryzgalov at $5 mill per season = Playoffs

Dallas Eakins and Staff = Playoffs

why is everyone crying about coaching and bad goaltending. look at our roster compared to the top 8 teams in the east right now. if anything, we have overachieved. when RW has a top 6 to work with then you will see us be amongst the contenders of the league. Our top line is really a 2nd line. and tyler bozak is centering phil kessel. give me a break.

I’m surprised Wilson didn’t crap all over his top 6 like he usually does after a game like this. For once I’d like to see Wilson engage his players behind the bench and not behind the mic post game.

Tired of the shitty and lame escuse that so and so is playing with so and so and Kessel has Bozak to play with. Good players make players around them better not whine about their line mates. Our supposed “good” players didnt feel like showing up last night-end of story.
