Prospect Quick Hits: Frattin, Gardiner, Colborne
Share

- Matt Frattin‘s magical season just keeps on going. Frattin scored the WCHA title clinching goal, burying a rebound in double overtime in Saturday night’s championship game, lifting his Fighting Sioux squad to a 3-2 victory over the University of Denver. The crowd of over 16,000 at the Xcel Energy Center greeted the WCHA Player of the Year with roaring “Hobey Baker” chants as Frattin was introduced during the pre-game warmup. Next up for Matt is the NCAA Championship tournament, which will begin Sunday morning with the selection show where his North Dakota team is expected to garner a #1 seed.

- Jake Gardiner has impressed thus far during his first two games with the Marlies, despite not yet recording a point. Gardiner’s smooth skating ability and on-ice vision have come as advertised for the point-a-game collegiate defenseman, and he has utilized those skills to effectively set up a variety of scoring chances for his teammates. Eakins has thrown the 20 year old right into the fire, relying on him for heavy even strength minutes and penalty killing duties as well. The Marlies are currently toying with the notion of employing Gardiner as the lone defenseman on a four forward power play, which has been inconsistent throughout the year. Jake’s poise, creativity and puck-moving ability could see him in Toronto as early as mid-season next year.

- Another player who has provided the Marlies with much needed injection of offensive production is Joe Colborne, who came over from Boston in the Kaberle trade. The lumbering power forward has scored 6 goals and added 4 assists through 12 games, and has responded well to the increased power play time and offensive responsibility. He’s done a good job of using his size to create time and space in the slot and in front of the net, and in turn capitalizing on screens, tips and rebounds. In fact, the Marlies have scored 15 power play goals during Colborne’s first 11 games in the lineup, which is a direct result of the work he’s put in to dominate the low slot.

Buffalo has to go back to back Friday and Saturday so that hopefully plays in our favor as well.

    @ canucksnaphook:

I still hold a small internal vigil for the 8th spot but I’ve resigned myself after that loss to the Panthers that we simply aren’t meant to be this year.

I hope they prove me wrong.

    @ dnksdad:
I think Kaberle wants to come back to the Leafs and would gladly take a paycut to sign here but I don’t think Burke wants him back.

I’d rather face strong teams. I’ll be you right now they lose one of the games against Minnesota and Colorado, but come up with a huge win over Detroit. The team has a problem getting up for teams below them.

With the Cooke elbow today, Colin Campbell will be in the spotlight again. Like a lot of people here, I have, for a long time, found his suspensions inadequate in length to really be effective. But to be truthful, I found the same thing when Burke was the chief disciplinarian for the NHL. I kind of wonder if Burke has changed his views since then. Probably not.
But I’m sure glad that we signed Burke as GM rather than the person who was at one time considered a front runner to take over the Leafs, Colin Campbell.

    @ Cameron:
And I wouldn’t worry too much about Minny getting it back together for the Leafs on Tuesday, today’s loss was their 6th in a row. They’ve completely gone into the toilet and looked fucking terrible against the Habs.
    .
We just play our game and frankly this should be a win. (Looking for wood to knock on).

guys, it’s been fun, but this year was never about the playoffs. we’ll add 10 points to our total from last year. and tons of team character, and SO many prospects that look real good.

it is about next year. and the 5 years after that. we add another 10 points to our total from this year, and we’re sitting 5 – 7. then, start putting together a bunch of 100+ point seasons. oh….it WILL happen.

I don’t wanna get my hopes up too high, but I have a strange feeling Reimer is going to become a legend. There’s just something about him….and his game. He just seems to be a star blossoming.

and schenn and aulie? imagine if you will, those 2 in the 2014 playoffs. both STILL very young, but absolutely dominant in the playoffs. shutting down the opposition’s best, and punishing them while doing it.

then, gardiner and phaneuf on the power play.

Yea, I know. I don’t expect the team will make the playoffs, but I also want it to be an option until the last week. It’s just that, it will be so crushing if we miss by 2 points or something, knowing there were so many games we just handed to the opposition.
