Game In 10 – Game 74

A trip to the wilderness in a game of no mistakes. Actually, this game had more than its fair share, the Leafs just benefited from more composure and goalscoring prowess. Continue for some Optimus Reim magic.

1 – The Leafs are 33-31-10 and I’ll just call this one 3 shots and a goalie.

2 – Not even a minute and forty seconds in and Joffrey Lupul makes it 1-0 Leafs with an absolutely wicked shot that beat Backstrom cleanly, off the post, top shelf, right where mamma hides the cookies!

3 – These line combinations work, it took some time (some time being a big portion of the season) for Bozak and Kessel to click like they did late last season, but they did and Joffrey Lupul really opens up some space on their line and makes them more dangerous on the forecheck as well.

4 – I swear, the Minnesota Wild have the greatest collection of funky names in the NHL. Cal Clutterbuck – a part time worker in a saw mill, likes flowers and long walks in the woods during a full moon. Clayton Stoner – a hockey player by day, hippy by night, may or may not enjoy certain substances. Chuck Kobasew – Making sausages is a hobby, making people smile – a calling. Brad Staubitz – Likes Word War 2 memorabilia and eating large quantities of sugar, ladies beware.

5 – I know John Madden is a defensive beast, but surely 2 short handed breakaways are a little bit much, wouldn’t you say? Pretty much what we’ve expected from this game except Minnesota didn’t capitalize on our mistakes. On the other hand what we did was capitalize on pretty much everything. Only 17 shots on Backstrom.

6 – James Reimer is the main reason we’re still in the playoff hunt. If anyone was denying that, there’s really no denying it anymore. I’m not calling him the second coming of Felix Potvin but for the life of me, I can’t remember when a young goalie played this well for the Leafs. 28 save shut out. Also, Luke Schenn – 3 hits (team leading), 1 blocked shot, 3 shots and a +2 on the night. God I love this kid.

7 – A great rush by the money line and Grabo basically takes a page out of the Lupul shot bible and continues his excellent season with a wicked snipe. His 28th goal of the season, ever closer to that magical 30 goal mark.

8 – Carl Gunnarsson has really picked up his game since Kaberle was traded and is also looking more like the defensive plus minus leader from a season ago. Much as expected, his ice time has also soared, from around 15 mins per game (when he wasn’t scratched) in a period from October 7th – February 16th to around 24 minutes on average from February 16th – March 11th

9 – Our PP just plainly sucks. No words of embellishment this time (1/6 tonight, which means 4 goals on our last 48 chances). Luckily, our PK was good as the Wild continued to struggle on their PP opportunities.

10 – No help on the out of town scoreboard means this was a life or death game and much like ancient Rome, it’s thumbs up for our gladiators!

I think we are in it till the end. If we are playing a meaningful games in the last couple of games this year I will be a very happy guy.

8-0 rest of way gets us in IMO.
7-1 gives us a chance, as long as that loss isn’t to buffalo.
13 pts rest of way i think would leave us on the outside looking in, doubt 89pts overall will cut it, but meh, who knows. seen stranger things happen i guess

I still don’t quite get why Wilson has not used Lasshoff more on the PP. When he has played there he’s looked really good. We were lucky last night in some ways because Brent made a couple of gaffes that could have really cost us if it wasn’t for Reimer.

There is no quit in this team and I think they will be rewarded for it

Goaltending is so important. Leaf fans are now finding that out. Without Reimer the Leafs would be at least 10 points back where they are now.
Look at Colorado last year and this year. Craig Anderson was an allstar goalie last year, and they made the playoffs. This year, Anderson faultered, and Colorado is no longer the surprise team of the year.

ummm, if there are any fans who know how important goaltending is it’s leafs fans. we just haven’t had reliable goaltending since belfour.
maple leafs fans are not thrashers fans or something. we understand the game and know what steady and reliable goaltending means dude

Just my opinion, I am no doctor, but Gustavsson’s heart problems may have been part of the problem this year. 3 heart procedures have been done….after the first one doctors said he was cured…then another and last month another….how many more ????
Can this goalie have a career, without risking serious health concerns ????
I don’t recall any pro athelete having so many heart operations, and having a long career.

    @ Mr. Hanie:
Although it is surgery, it is a minor procedure. For what he has (SVT) super ventricular tachycardia, the procedure called an ablation can sometimes require a 2nd or 3rd or more attempts to get it right.

ya it always has sounded like they’re minor procedures. but he’s right in that i myself can’t remember another athlete off hand who’s had so many of em in a relatively brief time

If I had it done to me..I would always have a fear in the back of my mind that something would happen, even during physical normal activties, such as mowing the lawn, shovelling snow..but that just me…..

My theory on Gus sitting it 100% opposite of the one expressed here earlier. I think most likely what happened was Burke/Wilson went to Giggy and asked him if he’s fit to play and he said yes. They explained that Jimmy is hotter than the sun right now and would be starting the bulk of the games. At the same time they talked to Gus and explained the situation they are in with a rookie goalie who is so hot they can’t not start him, and a classy veteran who they don’t want to embarrass by scratching him the remainder of his term in this city. Double this with the health concern they probably just said, look… we need you to do this for us. Rest, relax, work on your game in practice and get your confidence up. Sit out the next 15 games and be a team guy and next year in camp you have every opportunity to win that starting job.

I think Burke is too classy, and has too much respect for the players, to sit a guy like Giggy as a healthy scratch. I do not believe Giggy will be back unless it is in some coaching capacity.

I’m fine with Reimer and gusto. I don’t feel the need to spend big bucks on a 30+ goalie for many years. Get a front line center. Maybe a good puck mover. And A big forward with hands for the third line B4 a goalie

Don Cherry has said that if Reimer started the season with the Leafs, they would be in the playoffs for sure…I guess Don Cherry thinks Reimer is a bonafide NHL starting goalie with a long career.

    @ Amoroq:
My wife has a similar condition, WPF syndrome and fortunately no medicine is needed but at times her heart races and she experiences mild tachycardia, she is in her 30′s. I told her about the Monster and she said that they wanted to do the same procedure at one point but are letting her deal with it since it isn’t bad. She just has to stop what she is doing and takes deep breaths and gets it under control.
    -
The messed up part is if we ever got into an accident and she had an episode the EMT’s would think she was having a heart attack and use the paddles, bad move as that would kill her, so I got her to wear a medic alert bracelet.
    -
I can only imagine the severity of an athletes heart racing during competition.
