Captain’s Log – Dion Phaneuf at 82 Games

Dion Phaneuf has played some of his best hockey as a Toronto Maple Leaf over the past few months and it appears he is finally settling into a bit of a groove in El Toro.  Last Thursday’s loss to the Florida Panthers marked the Leafs Captain’s 82nd game with the team, a full season of games in the blue and white.  Let’s take a look and see how he fared.

Acquired along with potentially the best player in the deal Keith Aulie from the Calgary Flames, the arrival of Phaneuf was met with great fan fare and anticipation as the western Canadian boy was somewhat of a “YouTube” and highlight reel legend.  Massive hits, huge blasts from the point and just an overall swagger to his game and the expectations for Dion were massive, in hindsight, too big.

In 82 games with the Maple Leafs Dion Phaneuf has amassed 9 goals, 27 assists good for 36 points.  The physical blue liner also racked up 221 hits, 136 blocked shots, 254 shots on goal (imagine if he hit the net more?) and 111 penalty minutes along the way.  He hasn’t been the power play scoring threat we had hoped and has managed only 3 goals on the man advantage, as well as 13 power play assists.

Phaneuf, who carries a cap-hit of $6.5M through the 2013/14 season (three more seasons after this one) plays huge minutes (around 25) and on a pretty bad Leafs team was only a minus 5 during the past 82 games.  The overall numbers are probably a bit disappointing but he has played a physical brand of hockey and as our captain carries himself in a professional manner and appears to be a strong leader.  We’ll let his love of Nickelback slide; at least they’re Canadian, if that makes it any better.

I wanted to see where his 82 games as a Leaf would have ranked him league wide when compared to the 2009/10 leader board for defensemen.

-          36 points would rank him #35 in scoring

-          221 hits would rank him #6

-          136 blocked shots would rank him #36

-          254 shots ranks him easily #1

The scoring aspect has definitely been the biggest disappointment as Phaneuf ranked below Ian White overall though he was tied with Jack Johnson and ahead of Jay Bouwmeester for perspective.  He was only one hit behind Andrew Alberts for fifth spot however we all know how subjective the hit stat can be from rink to rink (hello Long Island).

The one area he could also improve is his shot blocking efficiency. As a big bodied blue liner, you would expect him to rank near the top of the league given his minutes and propensity to be a top penalty killer.  Ranking in the 30s again placed him behind Ian White for comparison sake.  We all know he loves to shoot the puck and he easily outpaced all defensemen with 254 which would rank him in the top 25 in the NHL.

To say Dion Phaneuf has been a bust as a Maple Leaf is inaccurate but to say he has not been a slight disappointment would also be false.  Expectations were too high and only seeing a guy on ‘The Score’s plays of the night isn’t a fair way to judge a player, much like a Vince Carter whose actual game could never compete with the highlight reel package most associated him with before leaving Toronto.  Phaneuf definitely has his faults but he has also showed glimpses of the type of player we need him to be.

Phaneuf turns 26 in April.

Nice to see this Brenner kid score 2 in his pro-debut, especially jumping into a playoff race.

Both Brenner’s goals scored up close to the net, punching in rebounds. At 6’2″, 190, that’s probably exactly where Eakins wants him.

Tonight was the 3rd game where Scrivens had stopped 40 or more shots – Dec 31st vs GR (40 saves) & Jan 28th vs SYR (45 saves) are the others

Huge win for us tonight. Defense made me look good by clearing all the rebounds, hard work by the offense paid off.. Great game by everyone.

Does anybody know if Reimer will be Calder eligible this year? He’s on pace to play about 36 games, and he’s certainly put up the numbers to nab a nomination. Don’t know if that’s enough games.

Love Reimer no doubt about it, but look at the goaltending in the east trying to make the playoffs, Price, Lundqvist, Miller, and Ward, It is small wonder that one of these guys will upset a top seed in the first round of the playoffs. On each of these teams goaltending is the reason they are in a playoff run, other then Eric Staal no other team mentioned has a star beyond their goalie. So IMO, it is a no brainer for BB to sign Bryzgalov in July. Boston is also in the playoffs due to their solid netminding tandem of Thomas and Rask. Bryzgalov and Reimer would give much the same effect to the Leafs and allow BB to give kids like Kadri a chance to make the big club rather then spend top dollar on a top six. If one more kid out of the Marlies can make the jump to the Leafs like Aulie has on defence, Burke has something special going here.

agree. i dont think burke can take a chance on our goaltending again. people seem to have forgotten about how well the monster played for us down the stretch last year.

Bryzgalov isn’t a guaranteed solution though, and he certainly isn’t the same calibre as Price, Lundqvist and Miller. You forget he plays behind a team that employs a great system and executes it nearly flawlessly. They are a group that has conceded they are not skilled, and have committed to getting it done the blue collar way. Coming to Toronto, where the system depends on the goalie, and not the other way around, would be a shock for him. I love Bryzgalov, but at some point, we need to trust our own guys. Gustavsson and Reimer have shown for significant stretches that they can get it done. Bryzgalov was once in this situation, and someone gave him the ball – we need to do that with our goalies.

If we didn’t have Rynnas and Scrivens just shredding the AHL, I would agree that a Bryzgalov might be necessary, and Gustavsson should be trade bait. But as it is, Scrivens has proven to be capable of besting even Reimer’s AHL numbers, and for a longer stretch, while Rynnas has won player of the month and week awards for his play. Between these four goalies, and the trade/waiver options that will be available should they all falter, we should be able to find quality goaltending.
    -
Plus, Burke has already said that if he signs a veteran, it will be Giguere – so I don’t know why it’s even a discussion any more really. I used to fuel the Bryzgalov fire, but it’s a moot point now, I think.

Huge win by the Marlies tongiht and things are gonna get exciting in the AHL playoff race over the next couple weeks. Congrats to Brennan on his 2-goal pro debut!!
    .
As for the goaltending situation next season, if Gustavsson can snap out of his Sophomore Slump and regain the form he had down the stretch last season and Reimer can avoid the Sophomore Slump, then I’d be quite alright heading into next season with the two of them.
However, going into the season with the two of them, you run the risk of Gustavsson’s slump continuing or his heart going wacky again and the possibility that Reimer could have a tough time in his second season.
    .
If Bryzgalov is brought in, what do you do with Gustavsson??? Do you send him to the Marlies and let him dominate down there and halt the development of Rynnas and Scrivens or do you give up on The Monster??

If Reimer and Gustavsson falter, you deal with the problem then. There are always goalies like Ray Emery around, waiting for another chance. The Islanders are doing great with Montoya who they nabbed for a 6th round pick. Since we have our own pick in 2012, it’s a risk we can take.

Good article Matt, enjoyed the read… also enjoyed the Blue Jay articles. So fucking pumped about the direction Toronto sports is finally heading. Maple leafs will be a playoff team in next year once they get a number 1 centre and a number one goalie… The Raptors… well at least they have a lottery pick this year. The Jays… well they are by far the most exciting team for the future IMO… They should be of the best teams in the MLB in the future… There GM is litterally a genious and probably the best in the game. being competitive in the MLB is way more huge then being a top team in the NHL because the money and attendance is much more in baseball considering the Yankees spend close to 300 million a season. Jays prospect depth in pitching is stacked…

I am actually less concern with our goaltending, I’m more concern about the 5-6th D pairing, I really hope Komi picks it up and improves, I really like youth but then you arent gonna pay a guy so much money for him to sit in the pressbox, and of course we need to fix up our forwards, top 6 forwards. Size, Center, PF, stuff that we need.

I never understand why fans are so concerned with a players salary. What does it matter that Komisarek is playing 3rd pairing minutes if Aulie and Gunnarsson are playing 1st and 2nd pairing minutes for well under 2 million? Even if they weren’t, a players salary should only matter if that salary prevents us from making other moves. There are so few free agents available, but as it is, we could sign several, and still be fine with Komisarek on the roster. Much like with Finger and Blake, Komisarek will be dealt with when he actually becomes an issue. In the meantime, our defense costs under 17 million dollars – it’s really not an issue in the least.

    @ Cameron:
Kinda of nice not having close to half our cap space tied up in the defense.
I agree with you as well, if Gunnarsson and Aulie are playing like Top Four defencemen, while making third pairing money, it doesn’t matter if Komisarek makes Top Four money while playing on the third pairing.
