MLHS Morning Mashup: Three Points Back

With a 4-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche last night, the Leafs have moved into a tie with the Carolina Hurricanes for ninth place in the Eastern Conference with 78 points, putting them three back of the Buffalo Sabres, who sit in eighth with two games in hand. Based on the past few seasons, the minimum number of points needed to qualify for the playoffs falls between 90 and 92 points. In order to reach that mark, the Leafs must win at least six of their final seven games. The goal heading into this west coast road trip was to collect four out of a possible six points, which has already been accomplished, so earning at least one point in Detroit on Saturday will be a major bonus for the team.

James Reimer is clearly the engine that drives the Leafs’ success, however there is one player in particular who hasn’t garnered nearly the amount of attention that he deserves based on his play this season. With spotlight shining on Clarke MacArthur, Mikhail Grabovski and of course Phil Kessel, there has been less talk of Nikolai Kulemin and his under the radar performance. With two goals last night, he has moved within two tallies of the 30-goal mark for the first time in his career. The 25-year old forward has not only set a career high in goals (28), assists (26) and overall points (54), but he has also been one of the team’s best penalty killers.

    @ Burtonboy:
I thought he got the puck in deep at the blue line of Denver. He Didn’t try to make an extra silly move. He made the smart safe play almost every time. I think his biggest problem as a winger is getting the puck out of our end along the boards.

i think that the arguement stemmed from you saying some asshole GM would fuck burke with reimer by saying they would send an offer sheet.

while i dont think that will happen, because reimer has to be interested in joinning another team for an offer sheet to be sent.

so to me there isnt a threat of an offer sheet increasing reimers price.

I enjoyed reading that bleacher report on how close the Leafs might be. I am generally a realist, and yet I have found myself thinking the same positive thoughts over the last little bit.
I would say that we are maybe just one or two significant players away from being a very good team. If we could have a franchise type centre with size fall out of the sky, I think we could be right there. We also need at least one more forward with significant size and some offensive skill that could pot 20 goals on a third line.
Where will this “franchise player” come from if at all, …I don’t know. Joe Colborne has potential. Kadri will eventually develop but he doesn’t have the size we need. Could Gregg McKegg end up being our Zetterburg? Will we be able to unearth a late first rounder this year like Getzlaf, Richards, or Perry? Is there another Mikhail Grabovski out there who we can pluck from another organization? Do we make a trade and try to move up in to the top pick or two of the draft? UFA???…prolly not!
I love our goaltending with Reimer and Scrivens. I love our top 4 D-men. The D will have Gysbers, Gardiner, and Blacker to choose from in the next year or two, they all have some of what our D neeeds and they compliment our top 4 nicely.
IMO, our keepers up front are Grabovski, Kulemin, MacArthur, Lupul, Kessel, Armstrong, Brown and Brent. Bozak is a work in progress. I think we need some additions with size, and the ability to get garbage goals and cycle the puck when needed. I think Christian Hanson could be a good addition to the bottom 6. We also may be able to land a good free agent with size for the third line. Still we need that centre with size and star quality. Trading for a player like this is almost impossible but it has been done before. If we were to find someone it would almost for sure mean that we would have to make Kadri, and our two firsts available.

you guys are spinning R Willie’s interview.

he said that he was struggling in the beginning of the game to control rebounds (ala, the rebound going off him and hitting phaneuf for the 1st goal) but said as the game went on he made the key big saves to keep the leafs in the game.

he wasn’t ripping on him like everyone is making it seem

    @ Penthouse:

Funny tho he directed the rebound in the direction of the corner/side boards. Totally on purpose but it unfortunately went off Dion. Shit happens but it wasnt for a lack of control.
