MLHS Morning Mashup: Three Points Back

With a 4-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche last night, the Leafs have moved into a tie with the Carolina Hurricanes for ninth place in the Eastern Conference with 78 points, putting them three back of the Buffalo Sabres, who sit in eighth with two games in hand. Based on the past few seasons, the minimum number of points needed to qualify for the playoffs falls between 90 and 92 points. In order to reach that mark, the Leafs must win at least six of their final seven games. The goal heading into this west coast road trip was to collect four out of a possible six points, which has already been accomplished, so earning at least one point in Detroit on Saturday will be a major bonus for the team.

James Reimer is clearly the engine that drives the Leafs’ success, however there is one player in particular who hasn’t garnered nearly the amount of attention that he deserves based on his play this season. With spotlight shining on Clarke MacArthur, Mikhail Grabovski and of course Phil Kessel, there has been less talk of Nikolai Kulemin and his under the radar performance. With two goals last night, he has moved within two tallies of the 30-goal mark for the first time in his career. The 25-year old forward has not only set a career high in goals (28), assists (26) and overall points (54), but he has also been one of the team’s best penalty killers.

    While i do agree that both the hits on lupul and komis hit were PERFECTLY clean.. what sperates them is that Komi came from a blind spot where as lupul was hit straight on… thats IF ANYTHING the nhl will use an an excuse to look at… plus it doenst help when you have DBAGS like millen calling it a borderline grey area hit on tv… should komi be suspended… shit no, but the blindside hits are soemthing they wanna do away with and that could be an excuse to look at it

    @ Uncle Otis:
    I was half watching it while I was on daddy duty. It’s better than playhouse disney. In a way I found it half interesting, the parts I saw. Kyper was good about it. He said he knew Vandenbusche was a good guy and never meant it and he didn’t expect the guy to apologize for doing his job. He admitted that the ref tried to step in and he said no (before he got KO’d). It’s good to see that these guys don’t necessarily hold grudges for shit and own up to their own responsibilities.

    Reimer has compensated his weak glove, by standing up more, rather than dropping to his knees. His style looks more like Marty Brodeur. I noticed that on the breakaways.

    Totally off topic here; I always laugh when american fans boo our anthem or chant “Canada sucks”. They don’t realise they are pissing off more than half of their players.

    No doubt… the pens games are a lot less fun to watch when the best player in the world isnt playing. Im glad they are taking their time getting him back in though. Its a shame that he was on pace for RIDICULOUS numbers this year too and tahts gone now cause of a freak accident and lousy medical work following that.

    Neither did Millen…and he gets paid for his broadcast drivel.
    I can’t overstate how much I dislike that twerp.
    He is such a league and ref appologist (“oh ya,no doubt about it”)..yes Greg,there IS doubt about it…your colleague just rightly said so.
    He forever tows the party line with blandness and seems painfully torn to show even the slightest Leaf bias.
    I bet Bowen must want to cuff him on a regular basis.
    @rpearce
    Bingo.Neale was an extreme appologist too.At least he had some wit,but could never take a joke at his expense.
    Say what you want about Simpson,but at least he holds the zebras to the same level of critique as the players.

    How did you guys feel about Kadri’s games last night. I think from an all round perspective it was his best game as a Leaf. Too bad he didn’t pop that one in but I thought he played well defensively and is starting to play physical like he was in AHL.

    I still dont see him as ready to be hoenst.. still careless with the puck and gets pushed around way too easily. He will be a gem once he adds some wait and some more experience
