MLHS Morning Mashup: Hockey Night in Motown

The Maple Leafs visit the Joe Louis Arena in the only meeting of the season against an original six rival in the Detroit Red Wings. Coming off their third-straight win after a victory in Colorado on Thursday, tonight’s game is the next step in the attempt to more or less run the board and climb into the top-eight of the Eastern Conference. Despite being second in the West, the Red Wings have struggled in the month of March, going 4-4-3 in their last 11, including two losses in regulation and an overtime loss, in their last three games.

Toronto is looking to capitalize on the Red Wings glut of injuries. Detroit will be without leading offensive forwards Pavel Datsyuk (lower body), Todd Bertuzzi (back) and Johan Franzen (groin). With a 16-7-4 overall record and a 12-3-1 road record when James Reimer is between the pipes, the Leafs have been one of the top three teams since the all star break, behind only the San Jose Sharks and New Jersey Devils. In order to prove up to making the playoffs, let alone to competing in them, Toronto needs to be able to beat the best. Let’s hope the continued lack of outside help hasn’t taken some of the wind out of the Leafs’ collective sail, as the state of Florida failed the Leafs last night with Carolina and Buffalo wins over Tampa Bay and the Panthers.

Follow the jump for today’s Leaf Links.

Quotables:

“You scoreboard-watch a little bit and you hope and pray that other teams help you out,” said Reimer, “but all you can control is what you do and how you play and what you do on the ice. Right now we’re just trying to focus in here and take care of our business and hopefully we can squeak in there.”

Thanks Greg, again a good write up with some interesting links. Now what in the name of blue Jesus does the state of Florida have against the Leafs. We go to that state and those teams play like Stanley Cup champs. When we need their help in tight race they play like shit. The Panthers I felt were victimized by a really weak call in the 3 rd period and let the game get away after that but the bolts look like the should be competing for a lottery pick not a cup.

    @ Gby:
Vokoun isn’t the answer, neither is Bryz IMO. Burke signed all of these young goalies for a reason, I dont think he’s going to sign a vet for a few years because it will keep them from getting the chance that i’m sure they all expected.

    @ 4evrblue:
Couldn’t agree more. If Reimer has a sophomore slump which I doubt given this guys attitude I fully expect one of the other 3 prospects will step up to the plate big time. Big waste of money signing Vokoun or Bryz when we have more pressing needs elsewhere.

to add to that. I know that it doesn’t matter if they get a chance or not, they have to prove themselves in order to get the shots they deserve but I think Reimer has done just that. Gus has played well at times and doesn’t deserve to be cast aside. He has one more season on his contract so its do or die for him. Scrivens has played well enough to at least warrant a shot as a backup, if not next season then the season after. Bringing in a legitimate 1st string veteran netminder just doesn’t make sense to me when we have so much promise between the pipes already.

    .
Vokoun was the guy Fergie the snorkel-faced Hab fan should have gone after from the beginning. Either him, or should have kept Edie. Reimer still needs to work on his glove hand, and some of his situational awareness, and if he falters next year we, as true Leaf fans, will be all over him.
Forget Bryzgalov (sp?). If we need to sign a goalie, Vokoun is the man!

Another feather in his cap…kid has me awfully curious
While it`s a big step to pros from college,he seems to dominate and has a long list of accolades.
Itching to see what he can do on the Marlies and beyond.
Possible blue chipper in the making (note to Cox)

    @ Burtonboy:
so true. Everybody is saying that Richards is the only worthwhile UFA on the market but I disagree. With a “2nd” line like Grabs, Kulemin and Mac followed by a “1st” line of Lupul, Kessel and whomever seizes the reigns I dont think we’re THAT bad for offense. If anything I would like Burke to target another Hodgson type of player. Probably wont get Hodgson himself but a high potential, big bodied centre that isn’t in the NHL yet. That would push Kadri, Colborne and Bozak even more.
    .
After saying all of this I truly believe our most pressing need right now is a PMD to QB the PP. Would love to have Kabs back but I just dont see it happening. Ehrhoff, Babchuk, Pitkanen and Wisniewski are all UFAs, gotta think that one of them makes it to the market. If that fails then trading for somebody like Liles, Carle, or Del Zotto might not be that expensive. Liles would be a good stop gap solution until prospects like Gardiner are ready but Carle and Del Zotto could very well find a permanent home here as a 2nd PP QB at the very least.

I dont entirely understand the idea that Burke built this team from net out. For the first time in his tenure we have steady goaltending and the only person we have to thank for that is JFJ. I agree he obviosuly focussed his attention on our Defence first but i think goaltending needs to be left out of that equation.

    @ 4evrblue:
This is setting up exactly the way Burke wanted . There will be fierce competition for many positions in the next year or two. From what I’m hearing about Gardiner he is real close to be NHL ready now. Half a season in the AHL might be all he needs. Lets not forget Gunnerson is showing flashes of becoming a PMD also. Wilson interview on AM640 last night was really interesting . He was highly complementary of Gunner and Aulie. He said Gunner plays a lot like Kabs only he passes quicker and is willing to shoot a lot more. He also said Aulie’s play has allowed Dion to get a lot more involved in the offense.

No question JFJ had a nose for talent….he just didn`t knows how to trade it. :)
