MLHS Morning Mashup: Hockey Night in Motown

The Maple Leafs visit the Joe Louis Arena in the only meeting of the season against an original six rival in the Detroit Red Wings. Coming off their third-straight win after a victory in Colorado on Thursday, tonight’s game is the next step in the attempt to more or less run the board and climb into the top-eight of the Eastern Conference. Despite being second in the West, the Red Wings have struggled in the month of March, going 4-4-3 in their last 11, including two losses in regulation and an overtime loss, in their last three games.

Toronto is looking to capitalize on the Red Wings glut of injuries. Detroit will be without leading offensive forwards Pavel Datsyuk (lower body), Todd Bertuzzi (back) and Johan Franzen (groin). With a 16-7-4 overall record and a 12-3-1 road record when James Reimer is between the pipes, the Leafs have been one of the top three teams since the all star break, behind only the San Jose Sharks and New Jersey Devils. In order to prove up to making the playoffs, let alone to competing in them, Toronto needs to be able to beat the best. Let’s hope the continued lack of outside help hasn’t taken some of the wind out of the Leafs’ collective sail, as the state of Florida failed the Leafs last night with Carolina and Buffalo wins over Tampa Bay and the Panthers.

Follow the jump for today’s Leaf Links.

Quotables:

“You scoreboard-watch a little bit and you hope and pray that other teams help you out,” said Reimer, “but all you can control is what you do and how you play and what you do on the ice. Right now we’re just trying to focus in here and take care of our business and hopefully we can squeak in there.”

The old dilemma, do you go with Reimer and Gigs next year and hope Reims stays true to form and Gigs (at lower salary) stays healthy? Do you go with Reims and Gus and hope both play the way they can? Do you bring in Bryz to be safe and go with him and reims…if BB did that he would have to move Gus I would say to show the farm that if there is not a spot with leafs BB will accomodate and send a player to a team where he might have a chance to crack the lineup…keep the farm goalies hungry…but at this point Gu’ss value is lowest so he wouldn’t get much.
    -
My gut, which is pretty big, says go with Reims and Giggy, only if Giggy wants to be back up and realizes he is now a mentor/backup goalie, not a starter, and if he signs for say 3 mil or less per year, maximum 2 year contract. If either falters, Gus is there. The chances of Reims failing, Giggy being hurt, and Gus not rebounding are slim. Use the cap space to leand a premier puck moving D-man UFA and land a #1 center. Bozak and Grabbo are not #1 centers, and probably will never be. Kadri and Colbourne seem like #2′s, to me.
    -
But I would be happy leaving Kadri or Bozak as #1 centers if we landed Parise.

I dont entirely understand the idea that Burke built this team from net out. For the first time in his tenure we have steady goaltending and the only person we have to thank for that is JFJ. I agree he obviosuly focussed his attention on our Defence first but i think goaltending needs to be left out of that equation.

That’s not accurate at all. Junior drafted him, but where does the real credit lie? Without a doubt, the development of the coaching staff that Burke and company assembled in Eakins and Allaire.

In addition to this, what was the Leafs record before Reimer started playing regularly and what has it been since he did? Proof is in the pudding that without good goaltending, you have nothing. It is perhaps the single most important position in all of pro sports and the reason teams rebuild from the net out.

Big game tonight, a win tonight and a Buffalo loss and we’re only 3 points back of the Sabres going into Tuesday nights game.
I know they’ve gotta take it one game at a time, but win that game as well and we’re only a point out of 8th, although Buffalo will have a game in hand.

I’ve been thinking a third line of Kadri/Bozak/Armstrong, but only if Burke can bring in a top line centre.

outstanding, but I wonder how good he could be if he was given more minutes, 20 goals this year playing 12:33 ES and 1:01 PP and 2 more goals averaging 2:23 SH is pretty good production and I love how he goes to the net.

These young Leafs have been playing in a “playoff type” atmosphere for the last 10 games or so. Great learning experience on how to play under a lot of pressure and find ways to win. However this run turns out, it will be a huge plus for the Leafs moving foward.

    @ keon:
he would be a good pickup, no doubt about that. I would also have interest in Upshall. Have to wonder if we are better off picking up one of those guys for the 3rd line or looking to fill that spot with a Marlie. Caputi, Hanson or Mueller maybe? If a guy like Parise came in (fat chance I know but a guy can dream lol) then Lupul would get that spot. This is going to be a very interesting offseason in any case.

I must admit I have not seen him play much but my buddy out west has, and says he is all about work ethic…thinks he might be at his peak now….extra minutes might be too taxing on that work ethic….but might be worth a shot …those are impressive even strength and SH goal numbers….speaking of impressive, Kulemin with 28 goals, only 4 of them pp….very impressive as well.

I like Frattin’s development too but let’s be patient. Last year ppl on this very site were saying “Is there any prospect hotter than Jerry D’Amigo?” Guess what he still has a lot to learn and I am not convinced he is even an NHLer….Frattin has some size advantage but there are demons in his closet too. Let’s keep expectations realistic and see where this kid is in 2 years.
