MLHS Morning Mashup: Hockey Night in Motown

The Maple Leafs visit the Joe Louis Arena in the only meeting of the season against an original six rival in the Detroit Red Wings. Coming off their third-straight win after a victory in Colorado on Thursday, tonight’s game is the next step in the attempt to more or less run the board and climb into the top-eight of the Eastern Conference. Despite being second in the West, the Red Wings have struggled in the month of March, going 4-4-3 in their last 11, including two losses in regulation and an overtime loss, in their last three games.

Toronto is looking to capitalize on the Red Wings glut of injuries. Detroit will be without leading offensive forwards Pavel Datsyuk (lower body), Todd Bertuzzi (back) and Johan Franzen (groin). With a 16-7-4 overall record and a 12-3-1 road record when James Reimer is between the pipes, the Leafs have been one of the top three teams since the all star break, behind only the San Jose Sharks and New Jersey Devils. In order to prove up to making the playoffs, let alone to competing in them, Toronto needs to be able to beat the best. Let’s hope the continued lack of outside help hasn’t taken some of the wind out of the Leafs’ collective sail, as the state of Florida failed the Leafs last night with Carolina and Buffalo wins over Tampa Bay and the Panthers.

Follow the jump for today’s Leaf Links.

Quotables:

“You scoreboard-watch a little bit and you hope and pray that other teams help you out,” said Reimer, “but all you can control is what you do and how you play and what you do on the ice. Right now we’re just trying to focus in here and take care of our business and hopefully we can squeak in there.”

The more I think about it the more logical it seems that Burke will be going after Richards this summer. If you look at it it would cost us big time to trade for Stastney or Parise. Unless Burke can pull a deal with a cash strapped team and that is a possibility I can see him signing Rickard and use the picks and the rest of the cap space to round out the rest of the lineup.

I love the morning mashup. No reason to look anywhere else for my sporting news because to quote Metallica “nothing else matters”.

    @ Burtonboy:
I agree, the addition or Richards would catapult this team into the playoffs IMO. As long as Reimer continues to give us steady goaltending, the Mac and the USSR line keeps scoring etc. lol

    @ Top Cheese:
Never said he was going be an instant success or jump right into the Leafs lineup. He may well never make it ,who knows. We can only judge things by what we see right now and how can one not be at least a little excited about the likes of Colborne, Kadri, Frattin , Gardiner, McKegg, Nichols , Ross, and Blacker. Surely one out of that group will be a bonifide NHL player. That’s the problem with many Leafs fans ,they continually look at the glass as being half empty not half full.

I wont disagree that the coaching has been below par for the last few years now but even with a better coaching system I still dont think we would be able to do much with the guys we have right now.

well then bringing in Kabs again or another PMD won’t matter given the track record of the special teams coaching. So I would change the special teams coach first then see what the new guy can do with the current talent before just bringing in players through the revolving doors

Giggy definitely seems done as a starter. Would be a good signing for a playoff team with a young goalie already playing well though. Chicago or Philly comes to mind.

    @ Blue Max:
Scrivens will be 26 at the start of next year and Reimer will be 23. Still think Reimer’s upside is higher, but Scriven’s does seem like a very good goalie. Future tandem? Maybe. The thing about Reimer is his attitude and I’ve said that all along. In fact at the start of the year I guaranteed that him and Braden Holtby would both be star’s in this league sooner than later because of their attitude’s and work ethic. I was pretty bang on about that. I know less about Scriven’s so I’m a little more reserved about his potential.

    @ lonsmos2:
when I think about it its the “chicken before the egg” argument. In order to make the PP better I think we are both right, we need an upgrade to the coaching and players, its just a matter of which comes first. Pick up whoever is available first is how I would do it. I’m not too savvy on available assistant coaches, who is available? I know there are alot of players that could fill the role for at least a little while.

    @ Burtonboy:
Everyone say’s that Frattin has an NHL shot and is a good skater that likes to get physical. Sounds like an NHL’er too me. He was seen as a steal when he was originally drafted but then struggled in College a bit at 1st, but has put it all together. He’s also apparently really smart. I’m with you we should be excited about our prospect’s more, not continually writing them off like some tend too.

I noticed that Jamie Devane had a great start to the playoffs last night with 3 point’s, this is another kid who is seeming to put it all together. I think he could be a Zenon Konopka type, tough guy with some skills.

Lashoff and rosehill are healthy scratches tonight. Knowing ron I’d expect brett lebda to play the 1st shift of the game vs old team.

Ahhhhhhhhhh fuck off Wilson ,why do you have to drive us insane all the time.

As much as we may hate Lebda thats a close dressing room in their and palyers love the opportunity to paly their former team. Wilson had to give lebda that chance in my opinion anyways… plus he was playing half decent there for a while…

But what kind of deals would you sign Richards too? Some team will offer him a 10 year deal with a cap hit of 6.5 to 7 million and I doubt Burke will match it…Richards will only come here if he takes a lesser deal (something like 5 years for around 7 million a season which would still be risky) OR see if he will take a one year deal at something like 11-12 million which would be ideal in my opinion. It will buy us a year to let Kadri and Colburne to develop as well as not constrict us when we have to resign Grabovski and Kuli…
