MLHS Morning Mashup: Playoff Hopes Fading

The Leafs entered last week with the hope of winning at least two of the three games on their Western road trip. They were successful in accomplishing that goal, however last night’s loss to the Detroit Red Wings put the team into a very difficult position heading into the final stretch of the regular season. In order to have a realistic chance of making the post season, Toronto will likely have to win all six of their remaining games and pray that the Buffalo Sabres hit a dead end and win two or fewer of their games.

Considering the season-long brilliance displayed by Ryan Miller, and major offensive contributions from Thomas Vanek and sophomore forward Tyler Ennis, the Sabres will have to suffer a significant blow such as an injury or losing streak to lose hold of the eighth and final playoff spot.

Brian Burke stated prior to the start of the season that the primary goal was to make the playoffs. With yet another season set to wrap up in mid April, the city of Toronto is not filled with negativity and frustration, but rather a sense of optimism and promise that the Leafs have made significant strides towards building a contending team in the very near future.

    That was my point
Murphy actually had a long career, just never became the star he was projected to be.

I guess you missed my point; that Kessel is not far from what Stevie Y eventually became…he is already miles ahead of those guys

I see…your right on that aspect in terms of point production at the same ages.
I was thinking more along the lines of projected stars that got the “flake” or “uncoachable” label applied.
I remember a young Stevie Y being called a dressing room problem. What exactly were the early accusations/rumours?

That he was a floater, bad defensively and didn’t show up when it counted; they almost traded him at one point. Turned out he was just young.

    LOL…sounds familiar.
Still it’s a big leap to go from Kessel’s state to a respected leader and all timer.
The thing I like about Kadri for instance is I have seen the kid get belted fighting for pucks(small frame in evidence) and his desire to listen, learn and change his game.
You may end up being right about Kessel…but my guess is he continues at or around the 30 goal mark and leaves you wanting…and often frustrated.
Character is usually evident by the age of 23.5,but there are always late bloomers in that dept. as you point out.
I just was blue skying on Burke working some trade magic and let someone else take the gamble.

    @ Uncle Otis:

I have big hopes for Kadri, as I would with any top10 pick we had.. I think hes a couple of years away though – at least from being a significant top6… nothing wrong with that and hopefully he can prove me wrong and score 25 as early as next year..

Here here..I wish he was still on our team.
I think there are two camps on what makes a great or highly desired player.
Those amazed by skill and stats and those (like me) who want battlers and hustle.
Id take a Roberts over a Robitaille even though their stats aren’t close.
It’s just my philosophy that you win with trench players in a drawn out playoff march vs the flashy types.Of course a nice mix is important, and special teams are where the skill guys can really shine.
Funny,my father was the opposite of me.He always lamented that the Habs forever had super talent and we had the muckers/soldiers.He thought the only all leaguer we have ever had was Keon.(vaguely remember him myself)
To that end, have the Leafs ever been able to say they had the best(or close to best) player in the league?
I loved Wendel and Sittler more than any…but neither were top of the talent pool.
Gilmour got close that one year and was arguably the best player…but tough to pick him over Gretz or Mario.
Anyway, just wanted to throw that out there…hey, maybe it will be Kessel ;)

Your a piece of work Cameron.
You have your opinion,I have mine.Time will tell.
But your over the top tirades are getting old…really.
On a good note,The Pens are now just 2 pts back of Philly(Philly game in hand) and meet Tues night.
Could go a long way to moving up the draft if Pens win the division

    @ Uncle Otis:
I agree with all of Cameron’s tirade. Give Kessel a year or two more and a solid center- and everyone shitting on him now will look pretty stupid. I don’t think he’s ever gonna be a complete player (defensively: I cringe watching him along the boards and maybe always will) but no one will complain when the Leafs are winning and he’s scoring 45 goals a year.

  • The Captain

I’m sick of the Leafs organization giving Kessel a free ride. He does not compete like the rest of our players. He’s not willing to change his game to develop into a better player either. If Kadri was playing like Phil he would get sent down to the Marlies in a heartbeat and the reason would be that “he’s not battling in the corner, hes turning the puck over, etc” SOMEONE NEEDS TO GIVE KESSEL A KICK IN THE ASS. We know you’re a one dimensional player Phil, do something to become a fucking superstar. You’re wasting your talents.

  • DARTH NIHILUS

While Kessel may yet one day become an “elite” winger people in toronto have the tendency to throw the term around loosely. This may be attributable to youth for people who didnt grow up watching real elite wingers like Hull, Robitaille, Gartner and etc. Only in this confused NHL era do we consider 30 goal scorers as “elite” when in reality an elite goal scorer is one who scores over 50 goals a season or has several sustained seasons of 40 or more goals. That company is very rare in today’s NHL. Does Phil Kessel have the potential to become an elite winger? Yes he does. Is he an elite winger now? No he is not. You cannot place him in the category of Andreychucks, Mogilnys, Gartners or Neelys. Kessel needs to play with his edge sustained over an 82 game schedule and not in spurts of 10 game multi scoring streaks followed by 15-20 game goaless streaks. If you want to measure his value over the course of the season you need to look at his game winning goals and compare them to others on the team and then to others in the league. In spite of being the leafs goal leader I think its Grabbo who has scored the most meaningful goals. Kessel is only 23 though so it would be foolish to write him off. I think a part of his lacklustre streaks and games where he doesnt show up may be attributable to the shitty coaching of Ron Wilson.
