MLHS Morning Mashup: Playoff Hopes Fading

The Leafs entered last week with the hope of winning at least two of the three games on their Western road trip. They were successful in accomplishing that goal, however last night’s loss to the Detroit Red Wings put the team into a very difficult position heading into the final stretch of the regular season. In order to have a realistic chance of making the post season, Toronto will likely have to win all six of their remaining games and pray that the Buffalo Sabres hit a dead end and win two or fewer of their games.

Considering the season-long brilliance displayed by Ryan Miller, and major offensive contributions from Thomas Vanek and sophomore forward Tyler Ennis, the Sabres will have to suffer a significant blow such as an injury or losing streak to lose hold of the eighth and final playoff spot.

Brian Burke stated prior to the start of the season that the primary goal was to make the playoffs. With yet another season set to wrap up in mid April, the city of Toronto is not filled with negativity and frustration, but rather a sense of optimism and promise that the Leafs have made significant strides towards building a contending team in the very near future.

    .
Burke has said he will go over 5 for the right guy. The question is, is Richard’s that guy?

I think it’s laughable to say Kessel is what he is at 23. He was the Bruins most dynamic player, and an absolute game changer when he had that center in Marc Savard. Obviously you weren’t watching him then, but 36 goals, PPG in the playoffs, often scoring the opening goal or the game winning goal, a huge plus – he was everything for the Bruins when he had that center. So powerful was his scoring presence that the Bruins dropped from 1st in league scoring to last when he left. I’m fine with being critical, but you can’t just make up nonsense.
    -
Phaneuf is actually much better now than he ever was in Calgary in my opinion. Something that no one even talks about is that Phaneuf really struggled against top lines when he was in Calgary, and was often shielded from playing those kind of players, leaving that job to Regehr. So much of the criticism against him was related to this, and the fact that he would go out of the way to make the big hit, and put himself out of position. Well, he’s reeled that in, and he only makes awesome, effective hits, and he’s learned how to be a consistent force in the plus while playing against the league’s very best all night long. Yea, he might only be a 40 point man now, and not a 60 point man (although the points may yet return even more so as the team progresses), but he’s so much more complete.

One thing Burke can offer that others might have a hard time with (though not the Rangers), is a huge signing bonus paycheck during the potential lockout year of 2013. I know that was a big concern for guys signing extensions last summer, or new contracts (Kovalchuk and the like). They wanted to be guaranteed a huge pay day no matter what happens in 2012/2013, so the contracts were structured to ensure they would not be deprived. Burke could make that year an 11 or 12 million dollar year, and really make it tough for teams like Dallas, LA, and Tampa (the reported other front runners) hard to match.

For those who are down on Bozak, think about this:
    -
He’s a solid PKer, good playmaker, decent faceoff guy showing improvement in that category as he goes, has great character, wins his share of puck battles and obviously has a high hockey IQ… all for around what? A million and a half next season?
    -
He is a perfect depth center. What are his cons? Doesn’t shoot enough and lacks a natural goal scoring instinct.
    -
I think your crazy to give up on such a useful, cost efficient player in only his second season.

Is it possible that Montreal , not Buffalo will be the team that will squeeze into the playoffs ?
They are having a tough time scoring goals.

cameron-you know when you say things like “nonsense” it’s really projection imo. read an article, listen to the bruins organization. kessel’s knock was that he disappeared when the going got tough. Wilson has actually referenced this before. he was actually benched in the playoffs-but you knew that. he was 5th on their depth chart in terms of players they needed to sign. they dropped in scoring because they were decimated by injuries. they are top 5 in the league now. please bud. I’m not debating kessel here. It was simply an observation that its odd that Burke made that deal. he’s not a burke type skilled player.

    @ Zombie:

lol, yea.. FB. he wasn’t a bad player, just didn’t mesh with Dion. Phaneuf can play his game with Aulie out there backing him up. With FB, Phaneuf had to back him up, and couldn’t free wheel up the ice as often, and when he did, well..

It was looking for a while that that game might have been played with the opposite likely to happen, as in them possibly knocking us out, but I will take us knocking them out anyday. Just like in ’07.

With people here complaining about Bozak & Kessel, look at Montreal–Gomez 7 goals for cap hit of 7 million and Cammalleri 16 goals for 6 million cap hit.

Although the playoff aint going to happen. This year is a success! We have a re tooled young D, a young # 1 tender and a good group of forwards. Now Burkie just needs to sign Richards or Webber (or both) and another third line winger and we’re set

As we all look ahead to next season, and everyone focusing on the top six, I still say Burke better sign Bryzgalov or forget about playoffs. If anyone is going to hang an entire season on Reimer to get us into the playoffs your crazy. Look at our Division, Price, Miller,Lundquist, Thomas, Ward and Fluery, We have to beat one of these to make it, Reimer’s name just doesn’t seem to fit with the other six. I hope I am wrong, but I sure would like better insurance then Gustavsson. The other two haven’t even started a NHL game so don’t bother telling me one of them is going to get it done. If the Coyotes lose Bryzgalov, they will go from 4th in the west to 10th, kind of like where we are now in the east because we didn’t have goaltending till the AllStar break. A great goalie makes for a Great Coach, just ask Scotty Bowman.
