MLHS Morning Mashup: Playoff Hopes Fading

The Leafs entered last week with the hope of winning at least two of the three games on their Western road trip. They were successful in accomplishing that goal, however last night’s loss to the Detroit Red Wings put the team into a very difficult position heading into the final stretch of the regular season. In order to have a realistic chance of making the post season, Toronto will likely have to win all six of their remaining games and pray that the Buffalo Sabres hit a dead end and win two or fewer of their games.

Considering the season-long brilliance displayed by Ryan Miller, and major offensive contributions from Thomas Vanek and sophomore forward Tyler Ennis, the Sabres will have to suffer a significant blow such as an injury or losing streak to lose hold of the eighth and final playoff spot.

Brian Burke stated prior to the start of the season that the primary goal was to make the playoffs. With yet another season set to wrap up in mid April, the city of Toronto is not filled with negativity and frustration, but rather a sense of optimism and promise that the Leafs have made significant strides towards building a contending team in the very near future.

    @ LT73:
very remote but we’re not mathematically eliminated yet. i’m not nearly as hopeful as I was yesterday though. I started looking at draft rankings and reading prospect reports today which has gotten me pretty excited about the draft, its my silver lining lol

You beat him 8-6 and he beat you 8-4… so I think he holds the tie breaker.

I was really surprised by Kadri last nite…surely his best game in a Leaf uni (slick goal aside)
Felt stupid questioning his pressence earlier that day,but the kid showed extra jump and determination all over the ice.He was clearly one of our best forwards IMO.
Hope he can continue to grow on and off ice.
Kessel’s latest goal slump is ill timed and the price you pay with a streaky, immature scorer.
The mention earlier about him coming off the ice screaming to be fed the puck speaks volumes…part of Bozak’s problem is that he’s been conditioned to do ONLY that.
Anyway, Im in Paso’s camp on this one..I wish Burke would put feelers out this off season as Im not sold on him growing much beyond what we have seen.
Anyway, gonna need PK and all the boys to elevate to pull off a minor miracle…keep the faith.
Squeezing past Les smurfs would almost feel like winning it all.

@LT73: I, like you, am seeing a very bright future, Leafs and Marlies. I have enjoyed and supported most of the current players. I have such optimism for the players, for next season. I could go thru an honour roll for this corp for this season. BUT BUT BUT all my enthusiasm will be dashed if there is no change to the coaching staff or system. PP, PK, line ups, Lebad playing, Lebad playing on the PP, inability to play with a supposed system. There is a ton of talent with the Buds, but from my limited understanding of the game there is a huge handicap that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere.

    @ Uncle Otis:
    -
Kessel isn’t going anywhere. I wish you guys would realize this. You can watch games looking for errors, and hoping Burke moves him all you want. You can imagine all the flaws you want, he’s going to be a part of this team for a long, long time. Just like Kadri is already proving you wrong, Kessel will come around. I can still remember when people said all this same bullshit about the Sedins when they were 21-27. They were too soft, they weren’t winners, they weren’t complete players, they lacked the will to take over when it really mattered – it’s all nonsense. It may turn out to be accurate, and it may not, but trying to decide now is foolish. He’s 23, and even though some players mature much earlier, Kessel hasn’t got there yet. Just be patient.
    -
By the way, if any non-Leaf player with 29 goals were discovered coming off the bench calling for the puck, they would be hailed as a Godly winner of epic proportions – unattainable by any amount of picks, prospects or so forth. Surely that is the kind of player everyone wants – the kind who wants the puck on his stick when the game counts.

Just noticed that I won the semi-final of the MLHS Keeper League on ESPN. Good thing Flappy Paddle wasn’t updating his roster everyday or I would have defenitly lost.
I won by less than 5 points and today alone, he had 17 points on the bench.

    @ Cameron:
    You contradict yourself quite wonderfuly.
One comment before you admit to sharing Paso’s skepticism re Kessel, the next you criticize me for the same.
Did you think Burke would trade Versteeg so quickly?..never say never.
My comment on Kadri incidentally was that I wasn’t sure this was the time to audition him during a critical playoff run….not that he won’t become a very good player.
How long ago were you telling us to book 40 or maybe 50 for Kessel?
My observations on Kessel haven’t changed if you remember correctly, and I don’t go off on him to often only beacause I tire quickly of these kinds of pissing matches you so wrongly crave.

    @ JCG:
    Wish I was.. ;)
Truth is they also said it about Joe Murphy and Alex Daigle…two first overalls who never matured as they should have.
It’s a crapshoot, but Kessel’s lack of emotional maturity and lack of CONSISTENT desire to compete at both ends and on the boards raise enough red flags for me to question his star potential.
Moreover,as Paso stated,he doesn’t seem to fit the Burke mold.
Lupul is more the Burke type IMO..his second effort last night( and his entire time with the Leafs) is what blood and guts Leafers like me admire most.
Anyway, just an observation from an old schooler.
