MLHS Morning Mashup: What’s still up for grabs?

Don't feel like blaming the Leafs' horrendous November? Point fingers at this prick.

It certainly felt like the Leafs allowed their final playoff hopes to slip with their loss to Detroit on Saturday. The Sabres won and the Leafs failed to keep pace, but really it has been Buffalo and New York’s red-hot play since the calendar turned March that has provided the nails to the coffin on the Leafs season. Estimates at one stage had the eighth placed team in the East finishing below 90 points. Now, the Sabres would only need to play at .500 through their final seven to make it to 92. We could be seeing the final team in the East at 94 points come mid April.

With 78 points through 76 games, the Leafs are sitting 21st in the league and could realistically climb as high as 19th, bumping the Bruins’ draft choice out of the top ten. They could surpass Carolina and Minnesota with a good final six, while staying ahead of St. Louis, Columbus (both at 77 points & each with a game in hand) and Atlanta (76 points). A poor final six could drop the Leafs as low as 23rd and put the Bruins as high as seventh in the draft order.

If that’s not optimistic enough of a goal for you, just hope the Leafs can beat Buffalo on Tuesday, sending them into a disastrous downward spiral while the Leafs miraculously win out. Sports Club Stats puts the odds at 0.4%. In the words of Lloyd Christmas, “you’re telling me there’s a chance.”

Onto your mashup from Greg:

Quotables:

“We’re definitely not getting any breaks from the other teams in the league,” Leafs defenceman Luke Schenn said. “Teams don’t lose down the stretch, I guess. We’re finding that out.”

    @ keon:

He didn’t get Rynnas and Scrivens because he had no faith in Reimer. There were definitely scouts and posters on this website who thought Reimer was the best goalie prospect in our system. I didn’t buy it personally, but it’s looking pretty accurate now. He got those two because you need goalie depth. When he had Giguere and Bryzgalov in Anaheim, he still went and got Hiller, Obviously there was no lack of faith in Giguere (Conn Smythe winner at the time), or Bryzgalov.
    -
Rynnas and Scrivens have torn apart the AHL too though, so there is definitely options if Reimer falters. Gustavsson not dressing has more to do with the team wanting to have Giguere on the bench for his veteran presence than with having a lack of faith in Jonas. Granted, they probably are wondering where he fits in, I just don’t think his current status has anything to do with it. Ryan Miller would have a hard time stealing the net from Reimer right now, so what does it matter where Gustavsson watches the game from? Furthermore, if Reimer does indeed struggle next season, you act like finding a quality back up is super hard. There will always be guys like Emery and Nabokov around who have the potential to come in and steal you games right away at virtually no cost. There will always be goalies available for trade too, veteran and otherwise. Look at what Montoya has done.
    -
There is little reason to think Burke is lieing about Reimer.

Has BB made one deal for us that was not a total surprise? Even the ones that didn’t look too great at first (Versteeg) in hindsight look amazing. What he did to Boston for essentialy a rental is just outright larceny. This summer, with a war chest of assets to deal with, I am too pumped to even speculate.

Yes, several. Jordan called Giguere for Blake long long before it happened, and I remember arguing endlessly with people that it was fair value because of the contracts and financial situations. Of course, at the time Leaf fans raved that Giguere was a Conn Smythe, and it would take 11 first rounders to get him AND move Blake. I guessed that Phaneuf was a target two months before it happened (and guessed that a package of Beauchemin, Stajan, Hagman would be what it would take), but was repeatedly told I was stupid because Pierre Lebrun kept reporting that Phaneuf was not on the block and would “never be traded”, and any Phaneuf deal would start with Schenn AND Kadri. I think just about everyone knew that Kaberle was going to Boston, or at least that it was the most likely possibility. He’s not really as sneaky as we’d like to think.

Does anyone know the name of Leafman’s sight. I use to check in quite often but when the leafs hit their slide in Nov. the sight got so negative so fast. I was wondering what it was like over there now that the leafs are showing signs of getting over the hump.

Under reported by the MSM for sure (largely because they hate our players and team so much – Kaberle for a 2nd, give me a fucking break). On this site though, we speculate about just about all possibiltiies, so we are bound to get them right occassionally. I even had a discussion here with Charlie, a poster who rarely comes around any more, and I told him that Burke would likely only trade Beauchemin back to Anaheim out of loyalty to the player, and because Bob Murray loved him and didn’t want to let him go in the first place. Bingo. Of course, I guessed about a billion different things, but the point is, there is enough speculation on here that we shoudln’t ever be too surprized.
    -
What we often get wrong is the return. I’m still shocked by the Beauchemin return. I’m still impressed by the Kaberle return. In that sense, ya, he’s been quite sneaky.
