MLHS Morning Mashup: Final Stretch

They say if you need something done, do it yourself because the rest of the Eastern Conference is bloody useless. I’m paraphrasing, and in the Leafs‘ case it will more than likely be too late regardless, but the Blue and White will attempt to hand the eighth place Sabres their first regulation loss in five games tonight at the Air Canada Centre and hope it initiates a miraculous sprint to the finish for the Leafs and a disastrous tailspin for Buffalo.

Once a matchup near guaranteed to see the Leafs drop points, the Buds have beat Ryan Miller’s Buffalo Sabres in the team’s prior two meetings by scores of 2-1 and 4-3. A win (in regulation) tonight would at least make things a little more interesting for a few more games. Most fans conceded any final playoff hopes after the Leafs loss/Buffalo win on Saturday, but the players are saying the right things in professing their continued beleaf:

Quotables:

“I feel like we’ve been pressing them the whole time and they’ve been answering back,” said Clarke MacArthur. “We just have to find a way to win this game and give ourselves a chance.”

“We don’t expect them to go in the tank or anything here,” said Joffrey Lupul, “but strange things happen at the end of the season when you can put some pressure on teams.”

    Let’s see:
-Only played 52 games this, backing up Hedberg for a variety of them.
-Being dethroned as Canada’s Olympic goalie
-Missing the playoffs, and playing rather unspectacular hockey this year.
    .
Do you think he’s got a chip on his shoulder. To me, the question would be does he get asked? And how do you not ask Brodeur to be a backup?
    .
Last year’s roster only had two goalies, so does Reimer beat out Ward, Brodeur, and Anderson (assuming they all want to play)

watching the highlights last night of the Duck game and noticed someone broke in around Getzlaf at the blue line, might have been Zetterberg and Getzlaf didn’t even try to catch him giving him a pretty clear unchallenged path to the net and I thought if that had been a Leaf player we’d have all roasted him for no effort on that play. You would hope the player would at least try and get back in the play

Yea, but he’s a guy who knows that this tournament is now being used as a development tool. It wasn’t an accident that the team looked the way it did last year. The players know this. Brodeur is ready to pass the torch I think. I mean, he even said he would accept a trade this year if the team needed to move on. Doesn’t sound like a guy with a chip on his shoulder to me.

If the Leafs get shut out of all the major names on July 1st and Burke fails to trade for any notable players, does anybody here think the current roster would be able to make the playoffs next season?
    .
I for one believe they would be able to, but wouldn’t do much damage when they get there.
It would take Phaneuf to keep up his strong play, Komisarek continuing to improve, Reimer and Aulie not suffering from a Sophomore Jinx, Bozak rebounding from his, MacArthur repeating this season, Lupul and Armstrong staying healthy and Gunnarsson, Schenn, Grabovski, Kulemin and Kessel furthering their development, while having Kadri prove that he belongs.

I noticed it too. It was Duchene. Leaf fans would have wanted him traded. If Kessel had done the same play, Leaf fans would be replaying the clip as proof his worthlessness for years. I love Getzlaf, but he does this all the time. So many good players do things like this. It just actually made it onto the TSN highlight reel for once…

I think the biggest thing we’d need is for Phaneuf and Armstrong to stay healthy (our only real collapse this year came when they were both out for 20 games), and goaltending to remain solid. If Reimer falters, Gustavsson, Rynnas, Scrivens, or someone has to be up to the task. The rest will sort itself out if we get those two things. That being said, Burke seems overly confident to me that he will land a top center this summer. He talks about it like it’s a foregone conclusion. I think he probably knows he’s going to be able to trade for someone big, or Neuwyndyk has clued him in to the Richards situation, and dropped a good word about Toronto in to him. Maybe they’ve evne worked out a rights trade for around the draft.

    @ Cameron:
Interesting perspective. You may be right, given that the options we have in goal. So even with Brodeur out of the picture, Ward is a definite. Now its pick between Reimer, Anderson and Mason.
    .
Optimus has certainly been the best of the 3 this year. I think internally, Leafs management will decide whether its in their best interest to send Reimer, with all the games he’s played. I know Burke said all invited players will be strongly nudged to go, but who knows if that meant his goalie too.
    .
Development vs. Rest..well, these are a new breed of athletes, so i would have to say that Reimer gets the #2 goalie position. Youth (Optimus) and Veteran (Ward) in net!

Alright, so we’ve settled our goaltending issue. Now I’ll concede MacArthur won’t get the call. And really, it isn’t necessary that he does get the call, because the big 3 will go (Kessel, Kulemin, Grabovski). Skinner goes, and I think Jamie Benn probably goes as well. What about defense. What would your defense look like?

That won’t happen. Burke will be busy this offseason. We/he/Wilson all know it isn’t acceptable to miss the playoffs again next season.

Good call on Richards, he almost certainly won’t risk injury. I think Spezza goes before Ribeiro though, because of the politics. The Senators aren’t sending anyone else, and I don’t think Nonis will want to burn any bridges. Spezza is a better player than Ribeiro, and this could otherwise come off as spite between rival GMs. And again, not sure if you read it or not, but I think Ladd will turn down his invite, as also is going into another negotiation, and also has had two long playoff runs in a row. So:
    -
Jamie Benn – Eric Staal – Jeff Skinner
Rick Nash – John Tavares – Jarome Iginla
Brendan Morrow – Matt Duchene – Chris Stewart
Evander Kane – Jason Spezza – Jordan Eberle
    -
    Very young.

On defense, the lot to pick from are: Phaneuf, Schenn, Aulie, Burns, Robidas, Giordano, Bouwmeester, Regehr, Pietrangelo, A. MacDonald, K. Russel, Daley

    Robidas – Phaneuf
    Pietrangelo – Schenn
    Burns – Daley
    (Giordano)
    .
I would contend that you can’t have too many offensive minded defensemen on the roster, so Andrew MacDonald misses out. You might see Bouwmeester in there over Trevor Daley, but yea, Jay has been pretty unspectacular in Calgary, judging by the numbers. I like Mark Giordano, but doesn’t he sound like a guy everybody underappreciates?

Again, Aulie has only played fragments of a year, and hasn’t had the opportunity to establish himself as a shutdown defenseman, which is what he is. His role would certainly be played by someone more established like Trevor Daley or Bouwmeester (still young at 28)

Fair enough in regards to Aulie. I think if the Marlies miss the playoffs though, Nonis will push very hard for Aulie to be in that tournament. I think I’d put Bouwmeester in before Daley though, as now that I think about it, he probably would excel in this high skill kind of tournament. It’s the gruelling NHL where his weaknesses are exposed.
    -
Team USA was shit last year, I hope they send a good roster too.
