MLHS Morning Mashup: Enroth Crushes Leafs’ Hopes

It appeared as though the Leafs received a lucky break when the Sabres announced that Ryan Miller was listed as day-to-day with an upper body injury as a result of being hit in the chest by a Dion Phaneuf slapshot on Tuesday. As Leafs fans, we should know better by now. With Miller out, the Sabres started a relatively unproven and undersized goalie in Jhonas Enroth, who had only appeared in nine NHL games prior to starting last night. He made 23 saves to earn the victory and his first career shutout. Buffalo’s win puts the Leafs seven points out of the eighth and final playoff spot with only five games remaining.

Toronto is back in action tonight against their division rival Boston Bruins, who have struggled against the Leafs this season, winning only two of the five previous matchups. However, the Bruins enter the game on a hot streak, winning three straight, their latest a 3-0 shutout performance over the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday.

Tonight’s game figures to be a goaltending battle between Thomas and James Reimer. Both have been consistent all season, but have been especially impressive in their last few games. Thomas has shutouts in two of his last three games, while Reimer enters the game with wins in five of his six starts.

The last time Boston and Toronto met, on March 19th, the Leafs broke out, potting five goals on Thomas. Although it is possible, it is highly unlikely that we see another see-saw match in Beantown tonight. Expect a low-scoring affair with strong defensive play by both teams fighting to finish the season on a positive note.

Quotables:

“I think I could be (the No. 1 netminder in Toronto) but there’s a lot of good goalies out there and management is going to have decisions to make. I’m sure they’re going to make the right ones.”

Last Night in Leafs Prospects:

The Whalers went on to win 6-5 thanks to a thrilling final minute goal to force overtime. Devane leads all Leafs prospects in OHL playoff scoring with one goal and three assists in just three games.

Hey guys, how is everyone today. Nice work on the Wilson stats Cam. I am a firm believer that Wilson has had very little to work with so far. Now however he is starting to have an NHL Calibre team to coach and we are winning( Goaltending Helps ) but still he has done well molding the clay he has been given. Next year will really tell as I do not expect burkes team next year to contain so many marlies players. Wilson will get more NHL talent over the summer via trades/FA and I cant wait to see this team next year.

You curiously left out the stats of Komi, Finger and Lebda. Is that soley because they are still in the organisation?

    -
Yea, it’s because they’re still around. Finger’s NHL career pre-Wilson isn’t significant enough to make that same kind of evaluation either. I would also argue that Komisarek’s decline has little to do with Wilson, and more to do with what goes on between his head, as well as he simply not having the skills necessary for Wilson’s system. Lebda is a mystery though – fucking brutal.

The fact that PP, and scoring in general, was better when he had a group of Stajan, Hagman, Ponikarovsky, Antropov and Blake in the top six, suggests to me that the current group only lacks experience and chemistry, and will figure out how to implement Wilson’s plan eventually. They seem to move the puck very well when they actually get set up, it’s just that teams often only have to break the set up once, and then we can’t re-enter the zone or win a faceoff. The fact that we tend to score in bunches on the PP inspires confidence in this theory.
