MLHS Morning Mashup: Enroth Crushes Leafs’ Hopes

It appeared as though the Leafs received a lucky break when the Sabres announced that Ryan Miller was listed as day-to-day with an upper body injury as a result of being hit in the chest by a Dion Phaneuf slapshot on Tuesday. As Leafs fans, we should know better by now. With Miller out, the Sabres started a relatively unproven and undersized goalie in Jhonas Enroth, who had only appeared in nine NHL games prior to starting last night. He made 23 saves to earn the victory and his first career shutout. Buffalo’s win puts the Leafs seven points out of the eighth and final playoff spot with only five games remaining.

Toronto is back in action tonight against their division rival Boston Bruins, who have struggled against the Leafs this season, winning only two of the five previous matchups. However, the Bruins enter the game on a hot streak, winning three straight, their latest a 3-0 shutout performance over the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday.

Tonight’s game figures to be a goaltending battle between Thomas and James Reimer. Both have been consistent all season, but have been especially impressive in their last few games. Thomas has shutouts in two of his last three games, while Reimer enters the game with wins in five of his six starts.

The last time Boston and Toronto met, on March 19th, the Leafs broke out, potting five goals on Thomas. Although it is possible, it is highly unlikely that we see another see-saw match in Beantown tonight. Expect a low-scoring affair with strong defensive play by both teams fighting to finish the season on a positive note.

Quotables:

“I think I could be (the No. 1 netminder in Toronto) but there’s a lot of good goalies out there and management is going to have decisions to make. I’m sure they’re going to make the right ones.”

  • What can Brown do for you

    @ Cameron:

Hope you are right, and D’amigo does turn out! Maybe he should get some top line minutes for the marlies next year.
And heart is one of the most important parts to being an NHL player in my oppinion, I put it right after skating. Look at St.Louis. Heart is something people they say Couturier lacks, but I highly doubt Huberdeau does. I have a huge hardon for this guy as you can probably already tell. He just seems like a winner to me when you put him into a leading role. Whoever gets him will make out just fine this draft. Its one thing to just rack up a lot of points, its another to do that AND be a winner. Matt Puempel is a good example of having one without the other, I would not be happy if we drafted him.

No ploy, just finished looking up all the numbers (I was very bored).
    -
The thing that drives me nuts about Wilson bashers, is that they’ve long expected him to spin straw into gold, and when he produces silver, they are still outraged. Take a look at the key players Wilson has had under his command during the first two years of his duty here, and how their production changed (sometimes dramatically), under him versus other coaches. This only takes into account the timeframe after the lockout in the case of players like Antropov, Blake, and so forth:

There is no doubt that Wilson gets the most out of his players. The only guy who has been better outside Wilson’s tutelage is Stempniak. Wilson loved Stempniak though, and I believe it was a sore spot for him that he coudln’t do more with him. Blake also slipped slightly, but that has more to do with age catching up to him than anything Wilson did. In most cases, these players went to better teams, and saw upgrades in their linemates After Wilson. Really puts in perspective what he’s done.
    -
I haven’t looked yet to make it official, but I expect this trend continues with the likes of Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Scott Hannan, and so forth. So maybe people should look at the players a little more closely in the future instead of immediately turning to Wilson to find blame.

I don’t care about Puempel either, but would trust our scouting staff if they picked him up. McKegg was saddled with a shitty team too, but found a way to create wins for his team this year. Adversity can be a good thing. Tavares and Hall were winners, but I don’t expect you’ll see them win anything in the NHL for a long, long time.
