Game In 10 – Game 79

This was the sixth and final Battle Of Ontario this season, and boy did the Leafs come out firing. Games against Ottawa are never easy (except when we beat them 5-0) and this one proved to be more difficult than it needed to be, but all in all, the run continues, and that’s really all that matters. Continue.

1 – The Leafs are 37-32-10, don’t look now but we’re still in it.

2 – I always love the Leafs Nation invasion of Ottawa, no different tonight. Oh Ottawa, why can’t you get fans? A great first period by the Leafs set the tone for the rest of the game. Good PK, only six shot against, and a period of 4:18 without a shot on net for Ottawa. The first goal was huge since the team is 20-4-6 when scoring first.

3 – Stephane Da Costa becomes the 6th ever French based player to play in the NHL, only the 3rd one in history to be trained in France. That’s probably a good thing. I guess a one year Ottawa rebuild means cradle robbing the NCAA programs. The kid didn’t look out of place though.

4 – Phil Kessel absolutely burned Kuba for his 61st point and 30th goal of the year. First Leaf to reach both marks this season. He also never gave up on the play burying the lose puck after Anderson saved the first shot. I love his play of late, better backchecking, good forechecking, better all around effort. Not to mention this is his 3rd 30 goal season, in only his fifth NHL season.

5 – Dion Phaneuf dominated the play at times and I can now maybe, possibly say that he is living up to his hefty $6,500,000 price tag. Around 29 minutes of ice time on average through the last 4 games played by the captain. It also has to be said that much of his success of late is directly related to him playing on the defensive pairing with Keith Aulie.

6 – It looks like Nazem Kadri is going to be just fine. Let’s face it, some kids just need a little longer to develop. If Kadri is producing like this during the most important period of the season one can only imagine what he will be capable of in 2-3 years down the road. He is a +3, with 3 goals, 3 assists, 6 points, a game winning shootout goal and an around 15 mins of ice time per game in the last 7 games (against the likes of Boston 2x, Minnesota, Detroit, Buffalo etc.) with 19 shots on goal during that stretch (which is a 2.71 shots per game)

7 – By now everyone should be on the Joffrey Lupul love bandwagon, the guy has been on fire of late, 4 goals in his last 6 games. Keep in mind he played his first game of the season on December 5th 2010 because of his injury and had played only 23 games in 2009-2010. He’s only going to get better. His goal was later changed to Bozak but a huge contribution in this game nonetheless.

8 – James Reimer wasn’t exactly all out brilliant tonight, but he still made 23 saves on 25 shots for the W. He’s winning games, the team is playing well in front of him, no reason to complain there.

9 – Nikolai Kulemin hit 29 goals late to seal the deal for the Leafs on a great effort by MacArthur, but his own forechecking effort is what actually won the puck in the offensive zone in the first place. What a wonderful season by our best two way forward.

10 – This is by far the most exciting time to be a Leafs fan since the 2003-2004 season, I’m just enjoying it while at the same time hating on Carolina and Buffalo. How many voodoo doll pins does it take? We’ll find out.

Of all the teams the boys are chasing, this article sums up why I want the Hurricanes to miss the playoffs the most:

Went to the game tonight, it was great to see our Buds in action taking out the Sens. I went with a buddy who’s a Sens fan, had a good time razzing him for anderson’s sub-par performance tonight…. again, the Sens managed to give a ridiculous contract that will screw them in the long run. Lets just hope Burkie handles the Reimer contract talks properly

Why does this late season push feel better than recent past late season pushes?

Because instead of Boyd Devereaux hat tricks, Poni creeping past the 20 goal mark, or surges backstopped by J.S. Aubin……we’re watching Phaneuf rushes, the push for three young 30 goal scorers, and a surge backstopped by James Reimer, a goaltender with an actual future with this team (and in general)

Because it’s not a late season push, they are 24-13-6 in their last 43 games, just over half a season.

Gotta hope for a Buffalo win tommorow, as a Carolina win puts us 4 points out of the playoffs. While wins by Buffalo and Philadelphia keeps us at 3 points out.
    .
Also, I asked this earlier, but if Grabovski and Kulemin hit 30 this season, will the Leafs be the only team with three 30 goal scorers??

The Ducks can do it too (ironically, the team that is still very much Burke’s). Ryan, Perry, and Selanne just needs two more. Chicago has an outside chance if Kane can net 4 goals to close the season. Philly could do it if GIroux scores 5 to close the season. Vancouver is the next closes, with Burrows being 6 out.

Forgot about the Islanders. Tavares just needs two as Moulson and Grabner each have 31.

It’s a combination. Wilson’s system demands reliable goaltending. Reimer hasn’t been the greatest goalie ever, but he’s done his job – something we haven’t seen in years.

Against Boston, Marchand took a golf swing at the Leafs bench when they had the lead… the Leafs came back and won it. Against Ottawa, Spezza gestured at the Leafs bench when he tied it up… the Leafs won it. Keep the taunts coming boys.

On Sunday if the Sabres beat the Hurricanes and the Rangers lose to the Flyers, and then also lose to the Bruins on Monday, with a Leafs win over the Capitals on Tuesday the standings would look like this Wednesday morning:
    -
    8th: Rangers, 87 points, 2 games left.
    9th: Hurricanes, 86 points, 3 games left
    10th: Leafs, 86 points, 2 games left

Great game. Not much to complain about. This is more of an observation.. Aulie is definitely a good influence on Phaneuf, but i actually think Lashoff is playing better lately but no one is talking about him! Aulie has actually had numerous turnovers in his own zone when there’s been very simple opportunities to clear the puck. I cut him some slack because he’s young and will no doubt become more steady with time..but right now, i’m not too worried about Lashoff getting the puck off the glass and out of our zone…Aulie, not as much confidence. Still a huge supporter of him and look forward to him developing with us!

Cheers boys and let’s keep enjoying our playoffs here! Regardless of if we make it or not, this is as good for now.

    Go Leafs

Another great game from the boys in Blue and White.
    -
It will be a huge game against Washington so really looking forward to that game. if we survive that I believe the schedule is in our favour. Carolina is playing 3 games in 4 days to close the season and Rangers is having 2 times back to back games.

This little snippet from Pierre LeBrun:
    “By Pierre LeBrun

You know those Ilya Bryzgalov-to-Toronto rumors we raised in our unrestricted free-agent primer Friday? Forget about ‘em. A source told ESPN.com on Saturday that there is “no way” Toronto would chase Bryzgalov this summer.

    Two reasons:

    1. Maple Leafs goalie coach Francois Allaire and Bryzgalov don’t get along from their days in Anaheim. “They can’t work together,” the source said.

    2. The Leafs believe they have their starter in impressive rookie James Reimer. Yes, they’ll need another goalie to complement him. At this point, the tentative plan is to see how Jonas Gustavsson does in training camp/preseason in the fall. If there are red flags at the end of camp, Toronto could try to add a veteran goalie through waivers. Another option is to bring back Jean-Sebastien Giguere with a cheap, one-way deal.”

I saw somewhere that there is a rumor that Richards is seeking 8 million for 8 years. The length of the contract is not to my liking. I would prefer 8.5 million for 5 years
