Ron Wilson Deserves Some Respect

If the NHL handed out awards for half seasons, would there be any doubt that Toronto Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson would be among a handful of candidates for Coach of the Year for the second half of this NHL season?  After suffering a 3-2 defeat to the Columbus Blue Jackets on December 30th, 2010 the Leafs record sat at an uninspiring 13-19-4.  Much of the blame for that record was placed squarely on the shoulders of our at times moody head coach.

I don’t recall a post game (win or lose) theme that didn’t in some shape or form include vast criticism of our coaching staff and the inevitable “Fire Ron Wilson” mantra.  Some of that critique might have been warranted but when considering the goaltending available to him to that point it is hard to solely blame one man (Ron Wilson) for the first half struggles of an entire team.

With James Reimer providing superb goaltending (and a save percentage not hovering around .880) the Maple Leafs since January 1st, 2011 have been a revelation with a 23-13-6 record.  An impressive turn around to say the least and after the Leafs big win over our little brother’s from Ottawa our record now sits at 37-32-10 – not too shabby.

Ron Wilson deserves a great deal of respect for the way he continued to persevere and keep the Maple Leafs playing hard and buying into his system.  There hasn’t been much in the way of “Fire Ron Wilson” recently but I also haven’t heard many positive things being said or written about him either. He deserves a ton of credit in my opinion.

The Leafs play hard until the final horn sounds on most nights and continue to show heart no matter what the scoreboard says, having come from behind on more than a few occasions this year – the team has won five times this year when trailing entering the third period, leaving them top ten in the league in the category. When established players like Kris Versteeg, Francois Beauchemin and Tomas Kaberle were shipped out I think more than a few of us might have worried about how the remainder of this season would go but the Maple Leafs have actually played their best hockey since becoming the youngest team in the NHL.

The way Wilson didn’t coddle Keith Aulie, providing and rewarding him with big minutes, seemed to allow him to take his new role by the horns. The decision to call up Kadri and play him with Darryl Boyce and Joey Crabb shortly thereafter had more than a few fans wondering but Kadri appears to be fitting in nicely and further developing the defensive side of his game while chipping in offensively with increased frequency away from the pressures of playing alongside Kessel.

Solid goaltending, timely scoring from multiple sources and lines and a resurgent blue line being led by our captain Dion Phaneuf has Leafs nation abuzz down the stretch of the 2010-11 season.  Although the Leafs won’t make the playoffs once again, what the team has shown for the better part of three months has given many fans around Leafs nation something to get excited about as well as much needed hope and optimism that things are indeed improving.

We have a cupboard full of draft picks, a great deal of money coming off the books and a solid crop of good young hockey players ready to make an impact at the NHL level (think Nazem Kadri, Joe Colborne, Jake Gardiner, Matt Frattin, Greg McKegg etc) and in my opinion a man behind the bench who is deserving of a bit of respect and a vote of confidence.

Ron Wilson is a solid head coach.

The dream will likely die tomorrow. Tampa has won 5 in a row, including a shutout victory over Chicago – you just know they’re due for a blowout loss.

Totally ridiculous. You thought our luck couldn’t get any worse after the Rangers beat the Flyers and Sabres/Canes went to OT… then this happens. Fuck you Boston.

I hope the boys finish the year strong anyways, and at least overtake Carolina. Bruins deserve the worst pick we can possibly give them.

Well I am going to cheer on the Leafs until my voice go hoarse for the next 3 games.
Then get ready for the draft and free agency and the preseason.
We will not have to endure this next year, those fucking teams will be hoping we give them a break instead!

Reimer tomorrow, Gustavsson on Wednesday, and Giguere closes the season against Montreal. Unless Buffalo loses in regulation tomorrow, than Reimer is going back in against NJ.

No, lets hope he does resign with him, as that gives us the conditional 2nd round pick in 2012.

Simple for the #leafs now — if the #sabres gain one more point or they fail to win all remaining games in regulation, it’s golf course.

Anyone think the Rangers won’t go after Richards at all, despite the rumors? They have 4 centers with solid stats, who are all primed to take yet another step forward next year:
    -
    Dubinsky: 24G, 29A
    Anisimov: 18G, 25A
    Boyle: 21G, 14A
    Stepan: 21G, 23A
    -
Not to mention Grachev in the AHL. Seems to me they could spend the money better elsewhere considering they only have 3 defensemen signed next year.

Also expect Colborne to get the final call-up (If I count correctly, Aulie, Kadri and Lashoff were the 3 Burke used, and he has one left).

Miller is injured so Buffalo still could lose 3 straight. Improbable. But strange things may happen. Tampa has Roloson in net, so thats a plus tomorrow.

I really don’t think they can afford him. They have to sign defenseman, plus they have Gaborik’s huge contract already. Some of their young guys are going to be looking for raises after next year too.

At least this year we dont have much to complain about… If we hadnt shat the bed in November we would be right in the middle of the playoff pack. Great second half of the season, and we got entirely through March with exciting hockey. Exciting year, especially for the near future of this club! I predict 94 points next season!
